  • what kind of drives are inside?

    the 5tb desktop drives use archive drives

      I'd bet on them being shingled. Annoying that Seagate has been getting away with being so coy about it, so that confusion reigns (e.g. the AnandTech article linked above suggests these are SMR drives, while Tom's Hardware suggested otherwise).

      • SMR is terrible for writes, so anyone getting one of these as a normal drive should know this beforehand. I have a 8tb Seagate Archive and while read speeds are on par with most HDDs, the write speed is absolutely terrible due to the shingled technology. Fine for storing heaps of data and reading off it (hence 'archive' drive) but it was a pain putting the data on there in the first place.

  • 15mm….. too fat for ps4 pro :(

    Cheaper than local? The Seagate 5TB Expansion is $217 from Good Guys, and was $199.20 for the past week with the eBay deal until today.
    Warehouse1 have the Seagate Backup Plus 5TB for $209 delivered.

    This isn't a good deal, as usual easternculture is making excuses to post referral links.

      Your links are to desktop drives, this deal is for portable.

      EDIT: Oops you're right, didn't read EC's 'cheaper than a local 5TB desktop drive' claim properly.

      portable vs 3.5"

      as usual not reading properly

      • Nah EC claimed that it's 'cheaper than a local 5TB desktop drive', so looks like we're the ones that didn't read it properly this time XD

          i got what youre saying

          still a good deal nonetheless

          @furythree:

          Depends how you look at it

          5TB is US$32/TB + post
          4TB is US$30/TB + post

          This is launch price and there's only 1 way the price will go, and it's not up…

        • +3

          @furythree:

          Not really sure it's a good deal, 4TB drives have been hovering around $153-$158 delivered in the last month and has been as low as $141 delivered.

          I get that it is a 'new release', but there doesn't appear to be any difference rather than the increased capacity, so don't think the release price is worth a post. Decent price compared to local stock which is usually the case with Amazon, but not a bargain.

        • @lyl: you cant compare higher capactiy drives with lower capacity drives on a dollar per gb basis because it is much better to say have 4tb in a single drive than have 2x2tb drives unless you specifically wanted 2 x 2tb for a specific purpose

          i was looking at 4tb but i want as high a capacity as possible

        • @Spackbace: Is it still typhoon season?

        • @Spackbace: A few years back there was a typhoon in asia and prices of HDDs spiked up to 50%.

        • @ruddiger7:

          Ah yeah!

        • @ruddiger7: its come down but inflation has gone up and our dollar has come down, whilst the hdd corporate greed hasnt changed

          so the price is relatively the same

  • I … must … resist.

  • Damn it, I already have too many 4TB portable drives. I'll try and hold out until the upcoming sales and hope it gets cheaper.

  • Was about to pull the trigger on the 4TB model, only to realise it's Black Friday sale at the end of Nov in the state, so hanging on to see if they will drop the price even further.

    This price is tempting but if you ever need to claim warranty it would be a pain mailing it in and then waiting for a replacement. I rather get it from Officeworks. As long as you have the receipt there is no drama and they just swap it over. But 5TB of data in a small, low power form factor and for this price, must resist!

    That's a big basket to put all your eggs.

    • That's a big basket to put all your eggs.

      This makes no sense, because it's 5TB you wouldn't have a backup? Totally illogical and devoid of reason.
