    Great deal. Camelx3

  • Great price. Bought one last time. Might buy another.

    • even better with the onedrive space…which i have a crapton of that i never use

  • +3

Coming up as US$106.18 or $141 delivered to Sydney for me. Good deal.

  • I tried to look up the hard drive and I think its 2x Samsung Spinpoint M9T 2TB, cheapest on Shopbot is $156+postage

    • Maybe but it's been my experience that different drives are used in the same external storage products so YMMV.

    • +4

I tried to look up the hard drive and I think its 2x Samsung Spinpoint M9T 2TB, cheapest on Shopbot is $156+postage

No it's not, this is 1 x 4TB drive not the FAST version which has 2 x 2TB.

      • The cheapest 4tb is 238.80+Postage, so still a good price. Any ideas on which drive it may be

        • +2

ST4000LM016… current going price is $350+ for the bare HDD!

      • Are you sure its not two hard drives. Have a look at the 1tb and 2tb, they are half the thickness. makes me think it may be two drives. I am only going by the picture.

        • +2

          It's a single 4TB SMR 2.5" drive

The model with 2 x 2TB drives is called the Backup Plus FAST.

Edit - apologies to Maverick-au who said this first above, I didn't notice

        • Backup Plus fast only comes in a 4tb model doesn't it, so 2x 4tb in Raid1, to make it fast
Where it could be 2x 2tb in Raid0, to make it bigger

        • @glennh70:

Where it could be 2x 2tb in Raid0, to make it bigger

You have that back to front. Striping is for speed so Raid 0 with 2 x 2TB drives is the FAST version.

It would be the Backup Plus REDUNDANCY if it was 2 x 4TB in Raid 1 plus it would be double the thickness again,

        • +1

It is thicker because it is a multiple-platter drive. In other words one housing, with numerous magnetic disks inside and one set of heads. This is the only way to get large storage density, since there is a physical limit on the amount of data storage per disk.

This 4TB is probably 5 platters of 800GB each. A 1TB of the same model would be 2 platter, a 2TB would be 3 platter - much thinner.

        • @jnewau:

It's not a SMR drive, I have one the internal drive is a Samgate ST4000LM016 and they are PMR, as per page 5 in their product manual:-

          http://www.seagate.com/www-content/s...100772113e.pdf

          "Perpendicular recording technology"

  • 1 year vs au 2 years warranty?

  • I paid 200 delivered last black friday, this is a steal.

  • +2

Tempted to buy four to strip the HDDs out of to build a nice little mini-NAS… but don't need another NAS. Nice little project though.

  • I'm going to be the guy that asks the obligatory question

Good to upgrade HDD in PS4?

    • +1

Think its too think to fit in a ps4

      • Ta

  • +1

FYI this reportedly has a single 2.5" sized hard drive, which will NOT fit the internal bay of a PS4 as-is,
it might fit if you remove/cut the metal casing (there are a couple of youtube videos), which is what Im going to try anyway,
if I still cant make it fit nicely (without a bulge) I'll just pop it back in and use it as external drive for my PC
    so win-win I guess

    • You are better to get a 2TB or other "thin" drive now and getba 4TB once the platter count comes down so the drives are thinner.

  • Came in at $147 for me (Qld?)but no worries, good deal anyway as my NAS backup drive was getting full. :)

    • same for me but after i paid in usd it came to $141 aud

  • I have six of these now, hope they don't discount them again tomorrow or I'll buy another one or two.

  • Bought one thanks Op! I was trying hard to find an excuse to buy more, but I already have my array sorted.

  • Thanks OP bought 2.

Silver was OUT OF STOCK during the time when I check out but BLACK, BLUE and RED available.

Updated: SILVER still available with 9 in stock but the price has been back to USD $138.15

You're confused, Amazon were selling these for $129.00 prior to the price drop. Amazon ran out of stock so other sellers are now appearing, this is how Amazon works, it's a marketplace where the cheapest products available appear (with some exceptions).

Sold by Tunny LLC and Fulfilled by Amazon.

  • Bought one, cheers!

  • Gave the 100th +. Great price. Snatched one up. Cheers OP

    • +1

      Congratulations

  • Nice, got one :)

  • I wonder if you can take this apart and use the HDD to install in a NUC? Would make an awesome low power 24/7 torrent box.

    • I have one inside a Hystou i5 fanless and works great for exactly that purpose, but not sure if NUC's accept 15mm drives.

Feels weird buying the portable version of the harddrive at cheaper than the internal only one. Hopefully a single usb connection is just as reliable as a usb connection with a/c power. Seems like the smaller portable version might be slower or more fragile somehow. Anyway

Also for me the item shows as US$99 (AU$137.44 according to Amazon). Shipping is AU$8.51. Total is AU$145.95.

I guess I'm getting charged a little more on the shipping to Canberra, ACT?

That's because you're letting Amazon do the currency conversion, $141 is the fee-free option (28 degrees cards etc). Not much of a hit to take if you don't have a fee-free credit card :)

      • If I don't have a fee free credit card and use an ING debit card am I better off letting Amazon do the currency conversion?

        • You'll need to look up their rates. There's only $4 in it, may as well let Amazon do it, it's a good price regardless

    Tear-down here: http://www.servethehome.com/seagate-4tb-2-5-sata-hdd-124-get… The ST4000LM016 bare drive is $350+!!

    EDIT: Snap with below ;)

Review showing the internals if that helps anyone

    http://www.servethehome.com/seagate-4tb-2-5-sata-hdd-124-get…

  • I have one of these which I have removed the hdd to use in my own pc build. It's a 15mm thick 2.5" so will not fit in most laptops.

Still a decent price for a 4tb hdd imo

  • anyone buy their 2-year data recover / 2-year protection?

    • I didn't get it, but when you click on 'learn more' you can get 3 years for the same price as 2!!! Might make it more tempting if you are on the fence… assuming the service extends to Australia. You may find it is only for US customers.

Did i miss out, is is my issue pebcak? - they are showing up as $129 for me

Try silver, it appears to be the only one in stock i think

EDIT: Red also back in stock

      • Thanks mate, got 2 - i'll be ripping them out of the enclosure anyway, so colour doesnt matter :)

  • I'll this drive be ok putting all my movies on it and then connecting it to my Mac with plex and the streaming to throughout my house? Is this setup just as good as having the movies in my macs hard drive?

    • this drive be ok putting all my movies on it and then connecting it to my Mac

If you format the drive into a format that the Mac can deal with.

and the streaming to throughout my house?

Personally I wouldn't bother doing it that way, but each to their own.

Is this setup just as good as having the movies in my macs hard drive?

Not really, as it is exposed to being bumped/dropped and technically it's slower than an internal drive. However for simple media serving it's probably good enough.

In my mind these kind of things should be done with separately powered 3.5" drives. I personally don't like the idea of using a PC (or MAC) as a file sever, as it ties up an expensive device to do something that is handled better and cheaper with a dedicated solution.

I suppose I am too "old-school" - for the past 10 years I've had all my media online using a old 2-bay NAS that I bought for $100 or so. It does everything needed, you just browse the Network shared folder and open and view. That works with all our devices, so I cannot really understand what value is added with needing Apps on every device in order to access proprietary served content that requires a TSR App to be running continuously on a machine that probably has better things to do.

To me, the whole Plex thing is an added complication that is not really needed for most people. I guess I don't see the advantage of transcoding, compared to simply serving the media directly onto the network. Also means that visiting devices don't need apps added in order to access content.

      • Yer but if I have a powerful Mac that doesn't do anything at night when I want to watch a movie, surely it would be better then a $100 - $200 Unit. Plus I only have XBOX 360 and TV that can use Plex as I like seeing cover art and details but having movies in MKV some of my devices won't be able to play them I don't think. any how as my 3TB Fusion internal Mac drive is becoming full, I thought having this 4TB portable drive connect via USB for my movies only. Just don't want to have buffer issues etc, just want it to work thats why I ask

        • Yeah, you can use a Mac, but it's a massive overkill.

You don't need Plex, you can serve the files themselves off a NAS or Router using DLNA.

iOS and Android can deal with MKV easily, you just need a suitable player.

Was tempted but a bit hesitated when reading the critical reviews. Should I pull the trigger or better wait for a WD deal?

    • +3

      This is a fantastic price.

I have two. One has been used hard daily for well over a year as my daily TV downloads drive (connected externally to my NAS). It is powered 24/7.

      No issues or dramas whatsoever.

    • Wow, there is a lot of unhappy buys there. Still $140 odd for 4tb is tempting.

    • I bought this one months ago at this price and used this article to make my decision…. 4tb category generally reliable http://www.askwoody.com/2016/which-hard-drive-should-you-buy…

      • Although the only mass stats we have, you need to be careful about reading too much into BackBlaze's reports, you can find plenty of discussions why. More to the point, BackBlaze stats are pretty much irrelevant for the drive in question. It's a 2.5" and BackBlaze uses few if any 2.5". This doesn't mean the hard disk can't be trusted or that Seagate should be trusted, actually closer to the opposite. (We don't really have enough stats to be able to reliably say Seagate is more problematic than WD. And we have even less stas to be able to say anything about how reliable this drive is.) In any case, whatever HD your buying you always need to remember it may die at any time and without any warning and make sure you plan accordingly. (Even an SSD shouldn't be treated as a failsafe storage device. And of course plenty of people only think of physical problems and forget it doesn't take much to lose data even for an experienced user without physical problems.)

All colours back in stock now at time of writing

  • Wow.. crazy. Bought one in black.

  • why did I have to check ozbargain! noooooo couldn't resist had to buy one

  • +1

Thanks for the deal. Grabbed one about an hour ago.

It seems a lot of the negative reviews are something along the lines of they might be rough plugging in and unplugging the USB cord or the state of their computer.

I wouldn't really judge the drive based on that.

Even for the price if the damn USB controller breaks just open the case lol.

    • Some reviews are not even applied to this particular model.

  • That is absolutely amazing value. Thank you so much for sharing.

  • 106.18USD paying with 28degree. Unbelievable! Thanks, OP.

    • Hi, just asking if how do you apply to 28degree? As I saw in their site you must have a minimum of $6,000 to get qualify? I don't have that kind of big money unfortunately :'(

      • Applied around 8 years ago. Has been my travel credit I card. Not sure about the requirement now but back then didn't need much income.

      • Isn't it $6k minimum credit limit? I don't remember there being any minimum cash amount in your savings.

  • +2

Interesting now with Amazon USA if you choose a pickup location instead of street address you save about $1. I chose to pick up from my local Priceline Chemist.

  • I paid 146 including delivery. Still good price. Thanks OP

After lurking here for ages, this is the deal thats finally convinced me to pull the trigger. Excellent find!

  • Got two…Thanks OP
    $273 Delivered.

So, if I added these to the order I would have received free shipping?

      • +1

no, my shipping was US$9.18 together.

The add on products are just cheaper than buying them individually.

Not too sure about the Durability/ Reliability
Some of the Unfavorable Review which have around 100-400 helpful review mentioned that it last around a month to 3.

Some of the review said that It ain't cooling down automatically and he have to unplug-plug every 15-30 minutes

Still a nice bargain , Best Value !

    • +1

Not too sure about the Durability/ Reliability

Why not? Read the reviews and you'll see most of one star reviews are from morons.

Some of the review said that It ain't cooling down automatically and he have to unplug-plug every 15-30 minutes

This makes no sense and these are clearly written by idiots.

    • Problem is, the squeeky wheel is the loudest. All the other good wheels are just rolling along quietly not giving a shit about writing reviews.

  • Hall of Fame worthy find.
    Thanks and well done, lyl!!

  • Is everyone buying through Amazon Smile??

    https://smile.amazon.com/Seagate-Portable-External-Storage-S…

  • How hard is it to crack open one of these?

    • Not hard at all, I've got one inside a fanless HTPC.

  • Can anyone who owns one already comment on the average write speed of this drive? Can it do at least 50 MBytes per second? I have kind of got used to decent speeds on portable drives (between 70 and 90) and don't want to buy this if the write speeds are like 25-30 (USB 2ish).

  • +1

Why am I getting this item does not ship to this address? Is everyone using freight forwarding?

    • It ships to Australia, make sure you don't have your address set as a PO Box - that might be the cause of the message.

      • +1

I had to remove it from the cart and re-add. All sorted, thanks.

  • Wah. soo many recent negative reviews of the drive failing …stuff that. Even if it's a great price why throw $140 away

    • -1

Yep I read those :( Disappointed about that otherwise it would have been a no brainier…

    • Wah. soo many recent negative reviews of the drive failing …stuff that. Even if it's a great price why throw $140 away

Bollocks, most of the one star reviews are like this idiot

"Proprietary cable port makes this thing useless once I lose your cable. Moronic."

      • lol really? let me go through

        • +1

lol really? let me go through

Some 4 TB reviews following…. Very few real failures, most of the problems are with the computers or the purchasers.

Don't buy this if you have a MAC!
A whole folder randomly got corrupted on this and all of the data was LOST! This is a certified piece of SH##!

Terrible. Kept crashing. I was using the USB to USB3 adapter and anything other than a picture file took forever. It would randomly disconnect. I recently got a "WD 1TB Black My Passport Ultra Portable External Hard Drive" and it is perfect. Don't buy a Seagate. They are garbage.

I bought this drive, because I wanted to cancel a subscription service that does offline backups (you probably know the one I mean). One reason I bought this drive was its claim "Create easy customized backup plans with included Seagate Dashboard software. " I was unable to create a customized backup as it claims. You can only make a backup of what the software allows you to backup,……

It is broken after 8 months!! I did not do anything wrong but It became inaccessible suddenly! And I can not return or replace due to the policy :( I want my data back!

The Seagate either stopped showing up on my desktop no matter how many times I started from scratch. There is no on/off switch either. Then it started screwing with my entire OS system. Hate. Hate. Hate.

Had this hard drive for 3 weeks and it failed on me. Would NOT recommend buying this one

Can't actually rate it because I have not yet been able to have my Windows 10 computer recognize it. Not working yet!

Backup software is not compatible with Windows 10.
(response from Seagate - We wanted to clarify that the Seagate Dashboard is compatible Windows 10 but it does work differently from other older Seagate backup utilities.)

Unrecognizable. Doesn't know if it is PC, MAC, or unallocated disk space. Crazy.

      • Am I right it's just a bog standard micro-B USB 3 socket which other than being non proprietary, could fit a micro-B USB cable (albeit limited to USB 2.0) which pretty much any smart phone owner who isn't hooked into Apple probably has?

    • There's not a big enough sample size for fail rates. People who had their drive fail and are angry are going to tell you their drive failed. But people whose drives didn't fail aren't going to post that their drive didn't fail, are they?

Seagate have been very reliable for me, as have WD. I own multiple of each. So I have no concerns here. Only thing is, the price went up already.

  • Got one, thanks.

  • anyone using one for there xbox one ?

  • Can anyone point me in the right direction of how to turn this portable drive into a NAS?

    • Buy a NAS and NAS HDDs… after it is all working, connect this drive to it for backup of the NAS HDDs.

    • how to turn this portable drive into a NAS?

      a) Plug it into the USB port of a NAS

      b) Plug it into a PC that is acting as a NAS

      c) Plug it into a server that is acting as a NAS

      b) Open it, remove the drive and install into a NAS

      etc.

      • So this drive connect to my Mac is fast enough to stream movies using USB?

        • You network will be the limiting factor, not the drive. And the computer's ability to process the video (if transcoding) then pump it out the network port.

Don't try and stream over wireless, that ends up being pretty horrid, especially if others in the house are using internet, Youtube etc.

Not sure why you mention a Mac. Do they have USB ports? Can a Mac view videos? Can they stream movies onto a network? What concern do you have about the Mac?

Personally, I would never use a Mac or PC to stream video as it is wasting $1000 device to do a job that is easier done with a $100 device (or for free simply by plugging the USB into a modern Modem/Router).

  • Thanks OP! :) great deal
