Bitdefender Various Versions up to 5 Devices 1year $24.98

100

Bitdefender Total Security 2017 Multi Device (Mac, Windows, Android) 5 devices OR
Bitdefender Internet Security 2017 3 devices OR
Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2017 3 devices

The Total Security option seems the best value obviously but you may not want the extra bells and whistles that provides which could be annoying. I've removed the tracking ID from the URL and the offer still works fine so it doesn't appear to rely on being targeted and in fact I've received the offer on 3 different emails including once again after I bought new licenses.

Bitdefender likes to automatically opt you in for 'autorenew' at the end of the 12 months 'for your safety and convenience'. The autorenew price is US$99.
If you cancel the autorenew at the end of the period, it immediately offer you the same product for US$65 as a special discount if you keep the autorenew on.
…whereas the real price of the product is regularly $25

    • I found that actually depends on where you buy it from. Avantgate who is a typically vendor of discount licenses does that and ignores when you opt out from the Bitdefender console. I had this happen and Bitdefender happily arranged a refund when I didn't want to auto renew.

      • I was forced to auto-renew. They took it out of my account. Don't think it was for $99 though.

    • I had no idea about this! Officially cancelled auto renew from the deal I got for the 2016 version. Thanks!

I purchased this (total security) for my tech-retarded parents. Happy to offer some feedback.

    Why:
As background, they have 2 windows PCs, 2 Android phones and an Android tablet to protect. The five license bundle worked perfectly for them.
I should also point out that they are the type to open an MP3 file with the .exe extension, have several browser toolbars, and at one stage were even penpals with a 'Nigerian prince' (like old school, pen, paper and postage stamps… I sometimes hope I was adopted).

Personally, I'm a fan of 'dont do dumb shit' protection and usually don't bother with antivirus for myself… Clearly though, this isn't suitable for everyone.
I found out that they were paying $240AU per windows device and $50AU per Android device per year. Yes, almost $600 a year, for a fairly average antivirus (only).

    Research:
This was the first time I'd tried researching antivirus and I can see why people get frustrated with it. So many (non)independent reviews and just straight up malware infected POS.
I eventually found a few semi reliable review sites, and combined that with user feedback on various forums (predominately Reddit).
Bitdefender was one of three that kept coming up with decent results and happy users. It also does a bit more than just antivirus. and would cost under $100 for all five devices.
By this stage, I wanted to give up, so I just wanted to be done with it and bought it ($80AU).

    Usage:
I was actually kind of impressed with how it all works. First of all, I should talk about Central. The online portal to manage your licenses and devices.
I like this, I like this a lot for my situation. I haven't seen it in a consumer product either, so it was a nice little surprise. From the central portal, I can manage licenses (I currently have 5 licenses, if I purchased this, I would have 10 and can add/remove devices as I feel). I can also check results of scans or if anything gets quarantined. No more asking the parents to do anything, I could kick the scan off, see results and take action from here. As the family IT Helpdesk, this is great.

It's hard to rate the antivirus, as we haven't had any infections detected (yet). But it's worth pointing out that the total package comes with other tools as well. Anti malware, disk cleaner, startup process killer, etc. These are all nice little touches that I'd usually use other tools for (malwarebytes, ccleaner, etc), but don't need to anymore.
For the mobiles, it also has anti theft as well. Allows me to track the phones from the web portal and initiate a remote wipe, or alarm, etc. Again, another feature that I might have used another app for. I know I can use Android Device Manager for my own phone, but this is great to track other phones I will be responsible for if they were to get stolen/lost.

    Final thoughts:
Considering I'm not a fan of antivirus, I never thought I'd be writing a review on one… But here we are.
Honestly, the centralised management and additional features make this a pretty decent product for $20 to $25 for up to five devices. As an antivirus product, it receives high marks from all reliable reviwes I read. It is extremely light on system resources, with no noticeable memory or processor hogging.
The only downside to be aware of is the renewal process described above (and on a few user reviews as well). Make sure you disable auto renewal to ensure you get the best price.

  • For free and centralised management there is Avast business edition which is about as good as Sophos free in terms of detection and better than Bitdefender in terms of centralised management reporting. Bitdefender has a better record of virus detection though as well as a smaller resource overhead.

  • Might even be cheaper with the Black Friday sales coming up at the end of the month

  • I have a Bitdefender subscription that has 100 days to go. Does anyone know if this 1 year license begins at purchase or activation?

    • +1

Activation. Although I'm pretty sure it will extend your license so it'll say you have 465 days left.

      • I would like to know if time can be stacked too

        • Here's what I found

Some Bitdefender license keys are excluded from the merge process:
          OEM
          TRIAL
          Beta keys
          Promotional keys

So you should be fine. If it doesn't work then you know you didn't get a proper key. Seems like Bitdefender support can help merge the keys if it doesn't work.

      • Thanks for that

      • I've had licenses previously that didn't start counting down until I'd assigned one to a device. It was something like 10 months after purchase and license activation(where it appeared in Bitdefender Central). This was over a year ago so this loophole may have been fixed.

  • Anyone having issue with their website? I can't seem to click "BUY IT NOW"
