        They usually don't check on low value items.

        Additionally, when you bring the item out, it's brand new, and by the time it comes back, it's second hand and likely that the value would have dropped significantly.

    My laptop is broken. I want to get this guy as I need a computer ASAP and with limited funds.

    However I can't bare to have another laptop break. I know the T series are built well, what about the E series? Standard use at home, travels in a padded backpack a couple of times a week. Will the hinges or base break within 2 years?

    Definitely pay the extra for a full HD screen. Have the 1366x768 on my E450 and it's a shocker. Colours look washed out even looking at it straight on, let alone from an angle. Doubt they've changed it but correct me if I'm wrong.

          No it'll have the Intel HD 620 which is a pretty good integrated graphics card tbh. The 940MX isn't significantly better and it's a dedicated gpu btw.

    Is the E470 a good model ? Is the build quality good ? I will be using it for office work . So basically MS office applications and browsing.

    How long is the warranty and how is lenovo support in terms of dealing with warranty claims ?

    Does it have a HDMI port for video ?

    Can the battery be taken out ? Or is it built in ?

    I will be connecting it to an external Full-HD monitor . So I am guessing 1366 x 768 would not matter for me.

    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

      Traditionally, lenovo "thinkpad" have good build quality

      Got one from the last deal, it's great , the screen is a bit hard to see, everything else is excellent. I connect the laptop to my HD monitor and use it as a desktop.

      I didn't upgrade the screen, but got the ssd instead.

      I can't see any docking connectors on the bottom or side of my E470.
      Don't think it has ability to dock. To my knowledge only R, T and X have docking

    Hi guys, I bought one of these during the last deal.

    If you have any questions ask away.

    Some important notes: If you are coming from previous lenovo product with non single key trackpad you will really hate the E470. If you are coming from an 450 model (where they had the really really crappy single button trackpad that literally rattled), you will find this model an improvement. The trackpad just doesn't feel as responsive, even after twiddling all the settings, there is obvious cursor stutters when playing full screen vid on FHD using the windows built-in player. Other than the trackpad I can't really fault the unit. You probably want to invest in a wireless mouse or learn how to use the dot mouse.

    I've swapped mine with 500GB 850EVO and added another 8GB of RAM, as another ozbargainer has stated, you will need very steady hands to peel off the aluminum cover which has a flex sata cable attached, then reattach onto new sata device. It is also recommended you use a bracket to elevate the thin SSD so it sits in place properly. If you like me also purchased an ORICO external case you will now have a spare external 1TB Western digital drive.

    I've got the FHD model and battery lasts around 5-6 hours.
    If you are planning on downgrading to win7 you are SOL, perhaps when the T470 model comes out you may be able to borrow some of drivers from the SCCM package and use them for E470.

    I did not spot an m2 slot while opening it up, but i also did not remove all the metal shielding which may have covered it. I did notice an nvme boot option, perhaps that slot is used by the wireless card. I really couldn't see where they could have fit a full length slot but then again I didn't look under everything.

    Like i said, don't hesitate to ask me anything related to this machine.

      Can you comment on the non backlit keyboard for non-touch typists? All my laptops prior to this have backlit keys that I don’t mind not having in low light conditions, but absolutely useful when I’m doing some light surfing before I go to sleep in near pitch dark conditions.

      Also do you feel the bezel up the top is too thick to be aesthetically pleasing? Also has the bezel size been reduced from the E450/460? I can't tell from the little pictures I can find of the E470 online.

        The white printed letters do reflect the light off the screen, but then again you cannot compare this to backlit keys. The keys don't have as much feedback compared to the older thinkpad keyboards and has minor flex when you apply a bit of force across the row of keys (not a problem for everyday use unless you do button mashing). While the quality of the keyboards are not as good as the older models its still better than 90% of laptop keyboards out there. It's not as good as the fat Macbook Pro keyboards, but better than the current Macbook retina ones.

        If you type really fast > 100 WPM, you will have to disable the keyboard key beeping in the BIOS. I have read these keyboards only have 2 key rollover (for some keys) and when typing extremely fast it will not like it when certain three key combos are pressed together resulting in a beep.

        Bezels aren't annoying me at all and i'm not sure what they are like compared to E450. If bezels annoy you I would recommend the Dell XPS as that is the king of thin bezels.

    I am going to be using this laptop as a desktop connected to a monitor and want to keep it connected to the power adapter when in use.
    Will that cause any problems with the battery, having it always connected ?

    I have heard people say that, if a laptop is permanently connected to the power adapter it is better to take out the battery . But the battery in this laptop is built in.

      You can't take out the battery, but in the control center software you can limit how much the battery is charged which is specifically designed for this purpose. Eg you can cap it at 70% or something like that.

      True, lithium batteries hate being held at 0% or 100% and it will shorten their lives. However, modern charging control circuits will keep the battery from being held at full capacity.

      What the control circuit can't protect against is 0%. Try really hard not to allow the battery to hit 0% and stay there, lithium batteries really don't like it.

    If you're planning to run Linux instead of Windows, then this can be a consideration:

    ThinkPad Dual Band Wireless-AC (2x2 WiFi, 802.11ac) with Bluetooth 4.1

    The ThinkPad wireless cards are sometimes a Broadcom abomination that requires a custom driver, or similar.

    I bought an E431 a while ago and the only place I could get a driver the the ThinkPad wireless was by downloading a binary RPM from somewhere on MEGA. Scared the crap out of me!

    Sometimes Lenovo offer a choice of ThinkPad wireless or Intel wireless… but not in this case.

    I ended up buying an Intel wireless card for it from eBay and it worked out of the box. It was hard work finding a card that was mentioned somewhere as compatible with the E431, but worth it for the simplicity of upgrades.

      Not much of a difference, same manufacturing process 14nm. Just minor graphics and cpu clock boost and low power ddr3 support. Other than that they are pretty much the same. You probably just get minor power and efficiency savings from the 7200.

      There is actually a fairly noticeable difference. In addition to the architectural improvements, the 7200U is a 25W chip compared to the 15W TDP of the 5200U. Don't particularly like comparing passmark scores, but I can't seem to find many benchmarks comparing the two so: i5 5200U - 3477, i5 7200U - 4816.

        i5-7200u is a bit tricky because the TDP can be tuned by the OEM from 7.5W up to 25W. The nominal TDP is 15W, however.

        Passmark is the worlds worst benchmark … I use notebookcheck's benchmark list to compare CPU performance.

    I really want to get amongst this deal for $708 but I have 2 concerns.

    1) How is the reliability of Lenovo machines? If something goes wrong, how is their service? Is it worth purchasing upgraded warranty?

    2) I have a perfectly good SSD that I would like to put in if I get it. I see there is a possible tricky installation with a ribbon cable involved. Would this be a straight forward procedure for someone who has built desktops before? I have limited experience with the innards of mobile devices.

      2/ Yes it is simple. It is an extremely straightforward procedure, even if you rip the aluminum cover you can just use tape to hold it in place. If you can slowly peel of a sticker you can do it.

      first off, definitely get an SSD for you CS applications.

      Depending on the complexity of your work in CS an i7 might be more suited.

      Depending on how heavily you ray-trace render in AE, I might consider getting an nVidia graphics card, say 940MX

    just sharing my experience with this laptop and lenovo in general for prospective buyers - i understand this may come useful with the influx of lenovo deals on ozb.

    Exactly 7 days in between each step of the process.

    This was for the 'custom' FHD lenovo with single dd4 8gb ram delivered direct from China via their shipping contractor Ex.peditors. The delivery was subsequently serviced locally by DHL which got it to me the day after the transfer.

    As for the laptop:

    Within expectations, I've only owned Vaios before, so built quality and aesthetics didn't quite wow me. I can see this laptop being my productivity workhorse because of the tactility and travel of the keyboard the thinkpads are known for - which is a welcome change from my vaios. That said, the plastic matte surface seems to scratch easilya and is a fingerprint magnet. I discovered tiny but noticeable scratches on the top lid after flipping the laptop over to install aftermarket parts. I had a piece of A4 paper under the laptop while working (applied some pressure while installing the hdd) on it, so was quite surprised the plastic surface still scratched so easily.

    Installing a ssd and additional ram was a breeze to do. All those complaints about cable ribbon snapping are all for naught unless you have really large clumsy hands and you've never worked on computers before. Got it all done in 5 mins.

    Did a fresh install of windows 10 home using the media tool and the drivers for all the hotkeys/shortcuts/fn keys auto installed all by itself, so that was also nifty. The FHD screen has great viewing angles, like most IPS screens are known for, but if I had to nitpick, it could've been a tad brighter on the brightest setting, but I tend to use my laptops unplugged in battery saving mode, so my eyes are accustomed to working with slightly dimmer screens.

    Also I own FHD laptops in smaller sizes 13.3" and 11", and I feel a FHD LCD on a 14" is just perfect. So really, the only letdown here is purely cosmetic, but can't really complain considering the $487 pricetag. The thick bezels kinda forces a lot of wasted space on the palm rest assembly in my opinion. If they somehow manage to retain the same price point while cutting down on bezel and palm rest real estate, this would be a much more portable and complete laptop.
