I've dealt with MSI's RMA policy. Broken fan cost me $50 to RMA (wasn't original owner). Brand new card was returned within a week.

I'd simply go with whatever manufacturer has the best warranty. Performance and cooling differences are small enough not to warranty too much stress.

  • +1

One factor is the ports on the card. The Asus has 2 hdmi and 2 display ports, the msi has 3 dp and only 1 hdmi.
    I'd lean towards the Asus.

    • +1

this might be better for some users if they don't want the HDMI. 3x dp is typically better for computer monitors so triple monitor setup might be what some are after?

i'm however going to use HDMI on a aldi big screen. so i only need one i think.

but the ASUS is probably better in build quality.

  • +2

    ASUS Strix. Just grab one

    • yep.. the retail for more on average so at the same price ASUS all the way! Also loved the LED and cooling

    • 1080 or 1070?

  • I bought the MSI as the fans only start at 60c - the highest out of all the 1070s.

    • My Evga hasn't even used its fans and that's playing arma 3 and DayZ on ultra at 1440p overclocked…. So about that msi

      • +1

Uh, ok? EVGA wasn't one of the cards listed, but go you, big fella.

  • I WANT ONE. and i need to decide soon because i dont want to miss out.

    downsides for me:
    - in a hackintosh build. 10xx drivers are unavailable. no big deal as i don't game on the mac partition, and i can use integrated graphics. as long as its 'presence' doesnt cause me any trouble.

    upsides
    - almost as good as a 1080
    - can i get another one later and do SLI for double/increased performance? i'm not familiar with SLI

    plz help i r noob

    • +2

SLI doesn't scale 100%. Some games, like BF1, hate SLI. Just don't bother with it, 1070 is the most you'll probably need for 2560x1080 or 1440p.

      • true. another consideration is HDMI 2.0 standard. I need HDMI 2.0b so i can run 4k at 60hz, i need to check that this is possible, as i have the right cable, but not 100% sure it's supported. it's not clear on the asus site.

        edit: should be fine

TBH, i dont think this is a good deal, EVGA with intl warranty on amazon is cheaper.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KVZBNY0/

    • Not sure about how others feel but I'm not completely comfortable buying expensive tech from overseas regardless of warranty.

      • +1

        1) it's not that expensive.
        2) it's not a hard drive
        3) it's well packaged
        4) how do you think they get here from china?
        5) international warranty means international warranty
        6) it's over $50 saving (and evga is a really good brand, asus has slumped a lot over the years apparently)
        7) amazon is tracked shipping
        8) credit card can do reversals if product is never received
        9) nine
        10) i can't make it to ten without cheating. so ten.

  • I'd do with the Msi, I was comparing these 2 cards a while back and ended up wanting the msi due to bad previous experiences with Asus cards and motherboards and also googling around found issues with the strix 1070 where one fan will just randomly stop spinning, it's not a power saving ir thermal thing it's just dodgy fans. Based on this I would have bought the msi gaming x 1070 but it went out of stock just before I was ready to purchase so I got the evga ftw 1070 instead because I cbf waiting for more stock to arrive.

  • I've been keeping an eye out on all these VGA card deals and telling myself to wait until the Black Friday sale but these prices are pretty good and I'm expecting this will probably be the lowest prices available until Xmas right?

Can anyone suggest if it would be worth it to just buy the 1080 instead of the 1070? I'll be gaming primarily 1440p.

Also insular, thank you for the amazon EVGA link, was about to grab it but saw the article about the EVGA Cards catching on fire. http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/evga-gtx-1080-1070-ov…

Therefore, now I'm so confused about just getting 1080 for future proof or will the 1070 suffice for my 1440p gaming for the next 3-4 years? If so which would be the best order for either card?
    1. ASUS
    2. MSI
    3. EVGA
    4. GIGABYE

Hope I can get some help from the ozbargain community
    Thank you in advance.

    • i still haven't ordered either and the heating issue is in the back of my mind but i thought i read somewhere that from 31st august it is no longer a problem. however, amazon could have older stock.

EVGA also require you to send it back to the US (i assume) at your expense. so whilst intl warranty is great, it could cost a lot. more than the saving of a locally bought card.

futu apparently take up to a MONTH to ship during sales. which is just too long.

msy have 10% off so i'm weighing up my options.

      • Thanks for letting me know, I was gonna by from futu lucky. I think I really should just hold off till the black Friday sale then fingers crossed can grab a 1080 between 600 to 800. If by miracle 600 I'll snap 2 straight away lol. Yea, the evga was suppose to be after August manufacture should've been ok, but the article in my comment was only posted on the 3 days ago and I think they are doing a recall and replacing them, so too big if a risk to stuff your pc up. Hence alway just go for an Asus or msi.

        • +1

TBH i doubt they will be reduced much more in the BF sales (amazon). not by hundreds anyway. never know, but i dont think vid cards feature on their BF sales.

i'm still looking, and so far the front runner the asus 1070 oc at msy for 562.50, local stock and $40 more than the evga but i dont have to send it back and wait (possible, and high temps bother me). local warranty. and gears of war promo is valid (so sell on ebay and pocket another 50 odd). bonus is: I CAN GET IT TOMORROW/today (friday lol)

  • +1

Ordered wed, shipped Thursday, arrived Melbourne Friday.
    Not too bad ^^. )
Downloading Gear of war 4 now..80gb..

    • Same for me here. Got the Strix by Friday. Ready to enjoy the games.
