AirAsia 9 Years Anniversary Sale MEL/SYD - KUL/Beijing $297 Return, MEL/SYD-Chengdu $337 Return

170

This sale is the new sales after the previous sale just finished on 30/10/16. This sale starts from 31/10 until 6/11 and it is $10 cheaper each way than previous sales for some routes (Chengdu).

Sales are for travel period 1 November 2016 - 5 February 2017

The highlighted deal was
MEL/SYD to Beijing(PEK)/PEK $169
Beijing(PEK)/KUL to MEL/SYD $128

The flight cost to KUL is more expensive so if you want to get this deal, just buy ticket to MEL/SYD - PEK and get off at Kuala Lumpur, then you can buy your connecting flight to other places if you just want to go to KL or other destinations that is not included in this sales. This way it is even cheaper than the Buddy sale and you don't need 2 ppl to get cheap ticket.

The best pricing for this is China destination, if you want to see Jiuzhaigou in winter this is the best pricing or just enjoy nice Sichuan food with "川妹” (Chuan sisters) girls ;) (famous for their beauty and hot temper)

Jiuzhaigou is heaven on earth place, the low season start from 16/11 with much cheaper entrance fee. December is deeper in Winter and it will be very cold and wet. You can plan your trip accordingly.
Jiuzhaigou in Winter

MEL/SYD - CTU (Chengdu, Sichuan) $189
CTU - MEL/SYD $148

I just booked 2 return tickets to Chengdu on 30/10, last day of the previous sales thinking price may increase and now it is $40 cheaper…grrr. So the lesson learnt, I should have hold the ticket for as long as I can until the next day to see if there is any cheaper sales.

You can hold your ticket for few hours using PoLi payment option (not sure how many hours), you can just log back in and make payment for your ticket using other payment method as well.

  • Should note that AirAsia to China does involve long stop overs.

I have done the long stop over a few times and just had a sleep in the Capsule hotel at KLIA2. However, for some this may be a problem.

    • Depends on which city you are flying to, MEL-Chengdu layover only 2.5h and 5.5h, for Beijing the return flight layover is 10h+ which is not ideal. It is better to book with the previous $300+ sale from China Southern airlines or $587 with CathayPacific sales.

Airasia is not cheap when you add on luggage. I will never fly with them unless I want to go to multi-destination or some less popular destination with full service airlines

Didn't realise KL2 had a capsule hotel! How much do they charge for a few hour stay?

  • The flight cost to KUL is more expensive so if you want to get this deal, just buy ticket to MEL/SYD - PEK and get off at Kuala Lumpur,

I suspect you can only do this if you don't have checked luggage, as otherwise your bags will go onwards to PEK right?

    • Good point! may work no checked bags going there and checked luggage ok coming back.

    • I heard you forfeit your remaining ticket if you miss a flight.
Can anyone clarify and based on experience?

      • Book two tickets. Airasia isn't cheaper for return pricing. The exception been that Paypal isn't available for the KUL to Australia leg and thus you may have to pay a booking fee.

      • You will forfeit the remaining ticket with traditional airlines. Airasia and budget airlines is different model which is stop by stop so your ticket won't be cancelled.

        • AirAsia X still has fly thru fares. THey used to not, but now they do. They are no longer an exclusive point to point carrier.

          AirAsia is different.

        • @sambutler9876: Fly Thru is a feature which cost $50 so that your luggage can be transferred without you taking it out and re-check in. Airasia IS and has ALWAYS been a point to point carrier. You still can request to check in separately even when you buy a Fly Thru ticket. The funny thing is with the extra cost the ticket is still cheaper than 2 separate bookings.

        • @sky2016

AirAsia is AirAsia X is not. They are not the same airline.:

You certainly don't pay $50 on this fare. I have used these cheap China fares 10+ times.

        • @sambutler9876: I have flown MEL-Phuket return and on the return leg I have boarded from KL and forfeited my HKT-KUL leg. This is AirAsia X flight. AirAsia is based in KL, with all their routes, where do you think you can Fly Thru if not on AirAsia X.

FlyThru is combining with their another flight to KL hub, and that means mostly are to Aus/NZ which is the long haul flight which is on AirAsia X (X = long haul flights).

        • @sky2016:

Because that is one flight with Airasia (AK) and one flight with Airasia X (D7). They are TWO seperate airlines with different ownerships and with different air operator certificates. They just share the same branding.

If it is AirAsia X to AirAsia X this is not the case.. Mel - KUL is AirAsia X, while KL to Phuket (and vice versa) is AirAsia (no X).. China flights to Beijing and Chengdu (also Shanghai) are AirAsia X. It is thus an AirAsia X connection.

        • @sambutler9876: I have already booked flight and I will check in separately to confirm for you. I still don't see the difference because it is AirAsia model.

        • @sky2016:

That is like saying Virgin Australia is the same as Virgin America which is the same as Virgin Atlantic.

        • @sambutler9876: FlyThru doesn't mean that AirAsia X is NOT a point to point carrier. What does it make any difference between FlyThru to China or FlyThru to Phuket, all are just based on your assumption.

FlyThru has been available for a few years and AirAsia/AirAsia X has always been a point to point budget carrier. Your comment is really a baseless assumption. Unless someone else prove to me otherwise that they can't board their return flight.

        • its like talking to a brickwall

        • @sambutler9876:

This is to prove that you have no idea what you are talking about. If you do book the ticket, go back and check the detail price breakdown. There is a THRU charge (FlyThru) in the price breakdown.

This screenshot is my AirAsia X FlyThru MEL-Chengdu I just booked few days ago.
          https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/197309/43671/airasia.p…

AirAsia/AirAsia X has always been point to point carrier and this FlyThru charge has always been like that. Even with that charge they have certain destination promotion which makes the fare cheaper than 2 separate booking.

Please comment with FACT not your assumption. You have 10+ bookings and if you don't know how to see the price breakdown can ask here.

    • Yes you can. You can ask to checkin only to KL and do another checkin for Beijing flight later in KL.

      • I'm unsure if they will ask for Chinese visa at check in, at an Australian airport, even if I ask to be checked in only to KL. I'm assuming Australian passport holders require visa to visit China.

        • +1

You just need to tell the checkin staff to check you in to KL. I have done this with same route MEL-Beijing via Singapore with Jetstar before, I decided to drop the Beijing trip so I just checked in to Singapore. I did not have Chinese Visa and I told the staff that I want to check in to Singapore only. No problem at all.

They only have to make sure you satisfy entry requirement for the flight you check in. I have done this myself, NOT based on hearsay or assumption.

    • You would want to be sure that you can get back on the return flight though.

      • I didn't know this. This is very good.

      • +1

I have done it myself ;)

  • Hmm can't get Christmas to nye for this price? Is this a black out time? Mel to KL return..25th Dec to the 5th Jan.

  • Starting to get impatient. Need ro travel to Singapore in December and am waiting/hoping for a special for pop up soon.
