Band28 only really beneficial if you live or go to rural areas

    • Agree.

Much better off with the Optus Huawei 5573 for same price at Coles at the moment. Unlocked out of the box and does band 28. I'm on the Gold Coast and only get good 4G signal on band 28 so it's not just rural folks who benefit. Also the Optus one comes with twice the data on the included sim.

    • Is it blue tick?

The Huawei is half price right now, expiring today.

  • Can be unlocked for about $2 on ebay by mobunlockingmaster

    • But also lacks 900MHz for when its on 3G, so limited use for companies other than Telstra.

      • It won't work on telstra re-sellers aldi and woolies until it's unlocked

  • 4G only 1800Mhz? no band 28?

  • And how much is it to load up with lets say 10Gigs of data?

  • Is it locked with Telstra sim only ?

    • yes, get the optus deal when it comes back. (those modems are unlocked)

  • My mum lives in Olinda (Vic) and typically gets the Telstra $140 for 16 gig, 720 day expiry prepaid deal. Usually lasts 6-9 months until consumed, using a usb dongle.

Would I be better to get one of these to put that SIM into (after the included data is consumed), or wait for the Optus one to come up again?

You need to search for the exact 4G and 3G frequencies that are used in your area and match them with the correct device.
Are you sure for example that 4G is available in Olinda? If not just get an unlocked 3G device that covers 850/900/2100Mhz 3G and that will do and can be used for all companies.

According to Telstra's coverage maps, Olinda (-37.8559, 145.3642) should get 4Gx coverage up to 75 Mbps.

        The closest tower is:
        2G 900MHz
        3G 850MHz
        4G 700MHz
        4G 1800MHz

So that would mean that if they upgrade that 2G to 4G on B28 after they decomission it won't get to take advantage of better coverage, but also being a small mountain town it's pretty unlikely it would be high on the upgrade list, so I guess this deal seems a go-er.

  • Saw in Kmart $24 Optus wifi device, not sure 3G/4G as there are no more stock at that time.
