  • Damn they cheap… I don't need to head over for a while yet, but it's an awesome sign of things to come.

  • Those prices are cheap but hard to find, the average prices between those dates on their website is $1200+. I am looking at going through a travel agent and flying united airlines is around $1100 from Sydney to LA any date I want.

    • I've flown both United and V Australia, and for economy class there's a vast difference between the two in my experience. It's a long horrible flight, and unless you're able to knock yourself out for the full 12/14 hours I'd go with V, nicer plane, better service, and their in-seat entertainment is great

      • Agreed, flew back with V in Feb'10 and the new 777 in their fleet was fantastic. Long flight still sucks but I think with V (cattle class) it was as good as it was going to get.
Double fold tray tables, in seat entertainment including games and the seats are fairly comfortable.

        It’s a long horrible flight

Wait until you need to fly to London!

        • Syd -> Vancouver with a stop off in Hawaii was the longest I ever did. 21 hours in a plane

        • Anthony But you didnt have to fly united…

      • Agreed, United sucks! I think my longest trip trumps all yours! I flew to London on Lufthansa which meant a flight share with United to San Francisco (and the plane sucked balls… this was only 4 years ago but they still had the one screen for the whole cabin and played Fantastic Four 2 TWICE!), then a Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt and then another Lufthansa flight to London (their planes were fantastic)! I can't remember how long it took but I estimate around: a-bloody-long-time!

I'm going to New York in 2 months (12th August) and got my flight for $1200 on Delta (booked yesterday). I wanted to go V Australia but needed the flight to be into New York, returning from Vancouver (getting my own flight between the two for $350). With Delta that was pretty much the same cost as a return to New York and could be booked online. With V Australia you could only do it through the phone and, despite the fact that I could get a return to New York for ~$1200, doing what I wanted made the flight $2800 (plus $50 for booking over the phone even though you can't book it online)!!! Something stupid about their flight-share arrangement with Delta for the domestic flights from LA. Because there were no more economy seats available for the LA-NYC segment on Delta, V Australia was saying I have to get Premium Economy from Sydney to LA. Apparantly this is in my best interests so that the conditions of the flight are the same (i.e. the same luggage allowance)… stupid.

    • United are always cheap, but frankly having last flown with them 10 years ago, and from reports by family and friends who took advantage of their cheap deals last year, looks like they haven't improved.

Saving a $100 on a flight to NZ or Bali even Singapore, and having poor experience is probably ok, but on a 14-15 hour flight you really notice it after the first 5 hours and you still have 9 to go

Edit - guess - Wampus types faster than me LOL (and to declare personal "interest" I have a Qantas flight in Sept/Oct $1200)

      • Sorry Pete! But it looks like we've had the same experience

Dollar strong atm. If you book, do yourself a favour and convert 1/2 of you budget over in to USD. 85.5c now when we were only 80 a few weeks ago. Perhaps it will be 90somethingc at end of year, perhaps 70somethingc. Depends on Europe. But diversify some risk away by changing 1/2 over now.

If it falls to 75c, your average rate would be 85+75/2=80c.

If it rises to 95c, your average rate would be 85+95/2=90c.

It is more likely to fall to 75c than rise to 95c, based on past performance. Personally, I believe that the dollar will still be in the 80s till the end of the year. But I am going away for 5 months to the USA and I have changed as much as I can over. I got 82c a few weeks back, which is roughly what you would get now (because of commission). It is important to note that for me most of my expenditure whilst in the states is dorm accommodation and food (US$5000). I cannot pay for this until I get there, so I have changed over US$2000 on to a travelex card and paid for all my domestic US flights and accommodation (I am stoping at LA, SF and NY before going to Indiana for uni.)

    • Will be heading there at the end of the year for 4 weeks plus.

Considering to change some money too.

Have you been converting AUD to USD from the banks (notes form)?

      • I will actually transfer some money into cash soon (maybe $US700?, don't want to carry too much on you incase you get robbed, cash isn't usually insured in travel insurance), but I haven't had time to go to the bank. I used a Travelex cash passport. The rates are quite good and it is the only way besides travelers cheques of taking large sums of money over. https://www.onlinetravelmoney.com.au/boq

If you are in QLD, the boq one offers a like a fraction of a cent more. Otherwise check out https://www.onlinetravelmoney.com.au/

Obviously do your research, a lot of people don't like these cash passports, as there are credit cards that offer no exchange premium (a Wizard one, I think). But you can't lock in the exchange rate with these, you make the purchase and get the exchange rate of the day. I am also a student, so wouldn't be able to get this card anyway.

        • (a Wizard one, I think)

          Yep.

a lot of people don’t like these cash passports,

          I am one of them.
The fees for putting cash in/out negate any potential gains from locking in an exchange rate.

it is the only way besides travelers cheques of taking large sums of money over.

Unless you are taking over $10,000 you can carry cash just fine.

        • Maybe your parents can get one and have you on the card. Nice thing about wizard is you dont pay any transaction fee so a $5 purchase costs the same as a $50 purchase (divided by 10).

No fees for extra users, no annual fee. and you can preload it with cash before you go.

    • Haha and to think some guy from Commbank last year (I think in around September/October) did a financial summery on the news and said that it will break the dollar by the begining of this year and possible be between 1.2-1.5 by mid year (ie now).

Edit: comment number 1337 :D and day number 222 as a member.

  • my auntie doesnt have a credit card, can i buy a ticket for her using my credit card?? or does she need to provide the credit at the counter??

    • it doesn't matter how it's paid for, as long as you enter in the details of the traveller correctly (i.e. exactly as it is on the passport) you'll be fine

Has anyone noticed with these flight sales recently (or not so recently I spose) that the sale flights are like a puzzle game…

"Try and find them if you can! haha! There's only one and we've hidden it really well!"

Every time I enter in some test dates within the alloted sale dates, I can't get anywhere near the sale price! :)

    • Sometimes the only way to win is not to play at all.

If an airline gets tricky about its specials and I can't find them, I'll remember that next time. Maybe I'll ignore the airline as a whole when I really do need to fly somewhere.

      • Nice in theory, but people will go with price, not principal. And I don't blame them when Qantas is double the price and United (for a much worse flight) is only $50 cheaper. Just like all the people saying boycot BP petrol because of the oil spill - if the price is right, people are going to use them.

        • SydGuy.

Where do you get this Qantas double price crap??

Went on to check a random flight - Syd LAX sept 22 return Oct 12

          United 1075 Via SFO
Air Canada 1104 (via Vancouver -ouch thats a longer flight)
          V - Via Melbourne 1199
          Qantas direct 1222

      • The flights are not hiding, they are there.
There are just non available when you want to fly (Or they are all taken)

    • This is why we built Adioso in the first place and is still one of the key problems we seek to address. However it relies on the airline's website being stable and responsive, which unfortunately isn't the case for VA at the moment.

That said, our index is much more up-to-date than it was when I posted this morning, so give it a try and let me know how it goes for you.

  • ah handsome monkey, did this last year when flying sia, and when my relo checked in they asked to see the credit card. fortunately my relo had a mobile and rang me from checkin where i confirmed the transaction, with the check-in person. I suggest if you pruchase a ticket, ring v and ask what happens next at check-in, to avoid any suprises.

    • Probably not an issue depending on how early you book the flight. eg if its for tomorrow yes they will check and thats wise, but for a booking 3 months out probably not as it will have cleared

  • oh ok thanks peterw1, ozpete
how about booking for someone overseas?? if i want to buy a ticket for my auntie in LA and pay for the ticket with my credit card here?? is it possible if i book it 3 months in advance??

    • You can buy anyone a ticket, the credit card used does not matter.
As long as you fill the ticket information in with her name she can fly on your money.

3 months in advance is fine, i know qantas accepts booking up to 12 months in advance; I am sure V Australia will be the same.
