    • If it has space for a mSATA SSD then you can keep the spinner.

    • A monkey with trisomy-21 could do it, it's that easy. And no, you can't leave the old HDD in. It's being replaced with the SSD.

While swapping the physical drive is very easy, moving the OS across to the new drive can prevent difficulties.

The most reliable way I have found is to use the Acronis disk image software, which has free versions if you have either a Seagate or WD USB drive.

As I prefer Seagate drives steps are as follows:
      1. Use Seagate DiscWizard to back up old drive
      2. Swap HD for SSD
      3. Use Seagate DiscWizard to restore image to new drive
      4. Tweek settings for SSD

Thank you mullarpa. Your additional info is indeed relevant and very helpful :-)

  • awesome deal. Does anyone know whether these have a M2 sata connector on them? Tried looking but couldn't find the specsheet for 470.

    • +2

I don't see a connector on the Hardware Maintenance Manual, but it mentions not to use mSata as a bootbale drive. That statement might just be a leftover copypasta.

    • actually nvm

    Any e570 offer? I need 15inch size.

  • Got the E440 during the Chinese New Year sale last year for around $600 with 'full-strength' i3, 8gig, decent discreet graphics, SSD - does very well as a all-round performer, super fast with SSD and can handle mod games - and with this model they've fixed the trackpad issues (which weren't even that bad) - pretty happy with the build quality and battery life is excellent

  • How much battery life?

  • Just cancelled my Amazon Flex 4 order for one of these, newer processor and more rugged laptop to suit my mobile business, and claim the GST as well. Hopefully can swap out my mSATA from my old X230i into the E470.

    • Missed edit, also forgot to mention, immediate write-off for tax as well.

  • It seem like lot ppl want ssd. Is it really big different? I never use ssd before. Only normal hardisk. Wonder how different is it between the two of them?

    • +5

Once you go SSD, you never go back! Faster boot times, applications open more quickly, the OS feels more responsive in general.

      • +2

Ok. Will buy this and upgrade ssd. Hope itshe easy process

    • +2

I will never buy a computer without SSD ever again. Even second hand. Too damn slow.

  • Can I install SSD my self ? Can a SSD be installed side by side with the hardisk ?

    • I read comment above, no you can't use it side by side. And yes you can diy ssd if you know how

    • If u know what ur doing yes. Doubt there's room for side by side but others may know for sure

  • Sounds like a good deal, tempted to pay extra for the ThinkPad E560 + an SSD though. As I would be using the laptop for business (web design on the go), a 15.6" Full HD screen and a number pad next to the keyboard appeals to me. It also has a DVD drive, which doesn't hurt.

$999 (before SSD) with $400 off at the moment. A fair bit more expensive than this deal, though may appeal to those after a bigger screen:

Not bad. That's the last-gen CPU though. E570 should be on sale soon, and probably for a similar price if this E470 deal is any indication.

      • Surprisingly, how do you know this? Are your a lenovo employee? Anyway, 15" looks more nice :)

  • Anyone know what the real world battery life is like?
I've been using my MBP for now 6 years and the battery is still very good. Have they improved battery life on these think pads? the last ultra book I purchased for the missus (Toshiba portage model) the battery noticeably shit itself after a year of usage.
I want to keep one at work for simple tasks, would this be ideal or should I just buy a macbook/air at around the 1k mark, even with older technology in my own experience my macs have been very reliable and have an outstanding battery life.

  • Any opinions if I should cancel my flex and order this?

Not sure of my usage yet… which is part of the problem I guess.

    • +1

      Been wondering the same thing.

I personally wouldn't cancel it unless a 15" was to come up with similar specs and price. The Flex was a good price, local warranty maybe an issue with it.

This has a couple of newer bits by the sounds of it but depends what you are going to use it for, I would say you wouldn't notice the difference for normal usage. The Flex also comes with a SSD and a FHD Touch

      • Thanks for responding. :-)

  • It's a Thinkpad so be aware that the function and control keys might not be where you expect them to be on the keyboard. For some people this may not be an issue… for others… get ready to be frustrated :-)

    • They can be swapped in the bios.
      Hence no issue.

      • Thanks for that info.

I wouldn't say no issue though as you would still have the wrong writing on the key cap. You can purchase replacement keys but what about keys with the different text?

Another keyboard issue is the second key from the left is wider than the one at the end. Normally keyboards have the wider key at the end.

As I said, some people won't be bothered by these issues. Others however may find then pretty annoying.

  • Got the predecessor (e460).
Solid little machine with great performance for the price and a fantastic array of usable ports.

My main criticism of the previous model would be that the battery life is reliably half what is claimed and the trackpad is pretty terrible compared to the macbooks.
Trackpad sensitivity is low, erroneous mouse movements high and most frustratingly it has some sort of momentum scrolling feature which randomly zooms in/out of webpages if you touch the CTRL button. Otherwise I'm happy with it.

  • Can you ask Lenovo if the dedicated graphics can be included in the options please?

  • Hi guys, anyone having issues using the code at checkout? no change when I submit

  • Just went on chat with Lenovo.

For those looking at upgrading the screen, on the order page it says 'Ships in more than 4 weeks'. According to Lenovo chat, 4 weeks is the maximum, and you could well have it much sooner. So that could be handy to know. I am heading overseas in 7 weeks, so good news for me.

For this price range (including screen and SSD upgrade) is this the best deal going right now? Anything worth checking out on the 20% off ebay sale?

    Thanks.

  • For just surfing the web, reading emails and watching movies and youtube, is this overkill?

Should I get this or iPad air since its more mobile and can do all those things?

    Thanks

    • +2

Both products would do that just fine.
So it is more about where and how you want to do it.
I find my iPad Air, great for: ad hoc internet answers; controlling the Sonos; plex; mythtv etc, plus gps maps and internet connectivity when away from home. The down side is it is slightly additive, so you constantly check it which can end up being a bit of a time waster.
I use my PC for more serious sessions, were I want document the results of my searches.
So for me the iPad is great for the living room, and the PC for the office.

  • Guys i ordered this for the girlfriend. Now lenovo keeps calling asking if she ordered the laptop and all these security questions. Anyone had this?

  • Questions like cc details how much it cost. Like seriously whats the deal

    • yeah got that too, Apparently ships from China according to whirlpool, Do all companies do this nowadays? It's a bit deceptive by saying ships in 6-9 days (as one may expect it shipped from Australia not China so don't know how long it takes).
Good deal but bit of deception (or at least misrepresentation)I say

    • Yeah just got a call now from Lenovo asking to confirm similar details.

They also had me make payment over the phone with a CC even though i chose the Paypal option through the website.

Was told should take about 2 weeks before i received it.

      • Are you sure it was Lenovo that was asking for your cc details? It is very strange that you would be asked for this if you had paid by PayPal.

Any idea if this supports a triple display, can't find an answer anywhere

    • Found out it does so have ordered one to replace my X61 as it's getting a little slow now

Now to find out which dock works with it

  • How much would this cost if you split up the parts???

  • Thanks TA ! Just made a purchase. Will look for an external DVD burner as I do often use them. Cheers !

  • Super…. just went to order one and get thru to checkout just to get a 'sorry we're doing maintenance ' page. Hope the code works tmw.

      Sale now extended :)

      • Thank you. Appreciate it.

  • Does cashrewards no longer work with this?

  • I can't access the web page. Initially the page shows up, then some wanky thing overlays the webpage (semi transparent) with a loading symbol in the middle. That's enough to put me off.

  • Website is broke. As above.

  • cashreward links didnt work for me…neither did the code
