David Attenborough's Planet Earth Blu-Ray Complete Series £13.57 (AUD $23) Delivered @ Amazon UK

1920

The one Blu-Ray series everyone should own. Absolutely incredible documentary. Enjoy :)

Not only is Planet Earth one of the most jaw-dropping, ambitious, nature documentaries the BBC has ever produced, it’s now taken on another role: as a superb demonstration disc for the strength of Blu-Ray.

Spread over ten hours, the series charts life and nature in dozens upon dozens of differing locations around the earth. Diligently and warmly narrated by Sir David Attenborough, Planet Earth calmly closes in on its subject matter when required, and then pulls out some stunning perspective shots that are simply breathtaking.

It’s hard to come up with the right superlatives to do the photography on the programme any kind of justice, and that it’s married to such fascinating subject matter is all the better.

Note: original deal now out of stock, but available on backorder. Thanks to hollykryten for the new link…

  • Thanks OP!!! This one is really good. Do you know if this is the 1080p version? There are some discussions about the differences between the UK and the US versions. One is supposed to be 1080p and the other one 1080i.

Be wary of warped discs that vibrate as they spin around..there have been issues with this series.

    • +1

Source? Series has been posted many times on OzB and first time I've heard this. No issue at all with my set.

    • That sounds like a general issue with the disc reader and not the product.
If you were right, this would affect other blu ray products

    • How did you get this problem solved? I wouldn't imagine Amazon UK doing a replacement to Auz

  • 1080i HD …. makes me sad.

1080i video is "interlaced." 1080i video plays back at 60 frames per second, but that's a bit deceptive, because it's actually broadcast at 30 frames per second. The TV then displays those frames twice, in a way—the first pass is 1,920-by-540 for the even scan line field, and the second pass is 1,920-by-540 for the odd scan line field.

The set I bought from Amazon UK just over a year ago is 1080p.

    • +2

This set in this deal is 1080p.

As i said previous it's only the Special Edition set which is 1080i.

  • same region code? lol

  • +10

Before you rush out and buy this be aware it is on netflix

    • in 1080p blu ray ?

      • -3

        No, it's 4k

        • +5

Which, from what I've read, still isn't as good as a 1080P bluray.

        • +1

@G3ck0: Lol pitiful bitrates on netflix

        • @plague69: Wasn't too bad watching it on Netflix 720p last night. Great doco :)

        • @cristobaljames: Mmm… It depends. Quality trade off = easy use. Depends on what you're after. Netflix super easy to discover stuff. If I want to collect something, I will still purchase a Bluray though

        • @plague69: Collections are cool but it also depends on how far you sit away from the screen ;)

        • @cristobaljames: Unfortunately, I can see compression artifacts very easily. Heck, any normal person can see the artifacts when a giant block of birds is taking flight. Doesn't happen with bluray

        • +1

@plague69: Fair call, looks sweet enough on my 70" in 720p from about 3.5m.

No complaints from me as its a fascinating doco but I understand if you are looking for pure eye-candy then bluray is the best option.

This docu is like 10 years old. I remember buying it for the PS3 to test the blu ray drive.

  • Thanks TA!

Just in time for the release of Planet Earth II later this month! It was all filmed in 4K apparently

    • +1

      that will look incredible

Hans Zimmer is one of the composers!!!

      • +1

        That is seriously brilliant.

    • Awesome… cant wait.

  • is this outdated now ?

    • +35

      It's the same planet

      • +1

I don't know… Second-hand planets could be filled with bog and water everywhere. I prefer to buy new and run it into the ground over a period a couple of hundred years.

      • new discoveries arnt made ?

    • +1

Technically it could be. I watched the David Attenborough Fabulous Frogs doco last night on one of the channels and towards the end they said one species of the frogs (the waving yellow ones) you saw earlier in the show are now extinct in the wild. It was kind of sobering.

      • Is it better if you watch it drunk?

Just checked my copy from amazon.com and it is 1080i. I bought mine in 2011 though.

    • Was it on the box? I'm interested in my copy now

      • +1

Just had a look at mine which I'm sure I got from Amazon.co.uk about five years ago. Says 1080i on the box.

Either way, great series and the footage is still pretty impressive.

  • Bought it from Amazon for $17 (delivered) few years back.

  • Is it better to get the Special Edition ? Seems it just has 1 disc more?

  • +1

Thanks OP, bought a copy. I had GBP 9.99 promotional credit on my account for some reason and paid only $6.30 :)

  • Silly question.. but getting the "This item does not ship to Australia".

How to get around this? Ta..

  • It says it doesn't deliver to Australia. Amazon stock must have sold out I guess.

EDIT: Oops, didn't read the above comments. All good!

  • +5

Currently classified as a nature program, soon to be classified as a history program.

not sure what this means officially without googling it, but sounds good to me :)

So much misinformation regarding the resolutions in regards to this series.
The PROPER format for this release is the special edition, which is labelled as 1080i50. Now don't be dismayed by the interlaced tag, as the special edition release is fully progressive. The reason it's listed as 1080i50 is because the Blu-Ray standard does not allow 1080p25 content, so they flag the video as interlaced (even though it isn't) just so it adheres to the Blu-Ray standard.
The regular edition release (the one in this deal, and the one available in Australia and the USA) is actually slowed down from 25fps to 23.976fps.

So stick with the special edition where possible.

    • I had heard the Special Edition had a dodgy master, something about the contrast being too high compared to the regular. Any truth in that?

  • +3

Doh! Added to card and about to pay and just realised I have purchased this item!

In the name of bargain, TA would have sold me second copy if it was not for Amazon that displayed the message "You purchased this item on 22 Mar 2011"

  • Can anyone advise how many discs are delivered?

  • +2

This bluray has stunning picture quality. We used to use it as a demo disc at JB Hi-Fi and it helped sell quite a few TVs..

Just ordered 3 copies at $63 aud; I think that makes me prepared for some good xmas presents for myself and 2 other lucky people :)

Only 12 Mondays to go, You're organised.!

Bought it together with Life which is similarly priced
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002KSA4F6/ref=oh_aui_de…

  • My copy came today and it is 1080i as previous people have mentioned says on the back 1080i /16:9 very disappointing wouldnt have bought it if i knew that

    • Don't fret, this original release is definitely 1080p. Check what your Blu-ray player/TV says when you actually play it.
Besides, the special edition which is 1080i will have the 2 fields merged into a frame from the same point in time. In other words, you won't get the combing effect associated with interlaced recording.

      • yeah i was reassured googled it. Its defiantly 1080p they just say 1080i as there are some parts that are filmed in it so they don't get sued etc for false advertising or something like that. Thanks for your comment though i feel at ease now defiantly knowing its in 1080p.

And i dont have the special edition says nothing on the case about special edition
