For those that are new to the series, Geomancer/Well of Echoes would be an odd place to start reading these books in my opinion.

The Well of Echoes books are set in a fantasy world which is established in a previous quartet of books called The View from the Mirror.
There are some recurring locations, characters and ideas that will carry over from those books into the start of Geomancer. Though there is an extensive glossary in the back of each book, I would still recommend starting at 'A Shadow on the Glass' which is the first book in the View from the Mirror series.

    • The original series was fantastic. Definitely recommend it to anyone.

    • For what it's worth, having read all of Irvine's books, you can definitely read this quartet without reading the first if you want to. Its written in such a way to support that. However, my recommendation also is to read the first quartet.

Pity about the latest book. Perhaps I've become more discerning with age, but I just couldn't finish it (though I've been looking forward to it for years).
