The books are great, the TV series is great (albeit cut short and with story lines left hanging), and the audiobooks are great.

The last trilogy is fantastic, as good as first 3
Jefferson Mays is an amazing narrator. So good I remembered his name
Other audio books you recommend please?
If you're on the fence about reading these - just do it. Such a great series.
Having watched the show, will I connect with the characters better?
I'd say so. And the show only finishes up to half way from memory.
Please hand in your OzB membership. Don't pay for audio books, use Libby and Hoopla. Your local library provides you access included in your local council rates.
This audio book is available in both apps. Not all libraries have it on the shelf. I just did a search and although it came back with a result, the book isn't in my libraries catalogue
he's talking about the audio book not a physical book - almost every public library should give you free access to Libby or Hoopla for free - this book is available on there
No, that's precisely what @sphinxy is driving at. Not every library has every ebook or audiobook on the (virtual) shelf. So while you may have access to Libby, you still may not be able to borrow a particular digital title. It's restricted by the library you're registered through. I literally just searched in Libby, and for this exact book I get this message:
"This title is not in your library's catalog. Tag it to receive a notification if the library acquires copies."
Hoopla doesn't even know my local library.
@rainynight65: I'm in a regional area and the range of books/audiobooks on offer is tiny even compared to a friend's way way outer-suburban library network.
It's pretty annoying that the big city libraries aren't allowed to lend electronic books outside their local area. Copyright really needs to be brought into even the late-20th century, if the 21st is a bridge too far.
@BinaryPirate: To be able to access other libraries check out r/libbylibby on Reddit. This way you can have several library cards
@BinaryPirate: I absolutely agree that e-rights are ridiculous. Some library corporations are joining forces to overcome this sort of thing which is interesting.
You can still register for multiple library memberships. Many libraries don't need you to live in the area, or even need you to visit to sign up as e-membership gives you access to e-collections. I have 3 different library membership on Libby at the moment, 2 out of 3 have Leviathan Wakes.
Libby in particular makes it really easy to have multiple accounts signed in at the same time.
@TheLibrarian: I would like to know what those libraries are as all the ones I've tried required a local address.
@BinaryPirate: What state are you in? It's possible they are more restrictive in your state. I am in Victoria where the requirement tends to be that you are a Victorian resident, so a Vic address. Here are some options for Vic libraries and their membership policies (as quoted on their websites). Also I am a member of all of these services but I do not live in these areas.
City of Melbourne - https://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/library-memberships-and-pol… - eLibrary membership is available to all Victorian residents. eLibrary membership provides access to digital collections only
Whitehorse Manningham - https://www.wml.vic.gov.au/LoginJoin - All Victorian residents can join. Proof of address in Victoria is required. (can vouch that these guys post your membership card out, and that acts as proof of address - at least that was the case when I joined a few years ago).
Yarra Plenty regional Library - https://www.yprl.vic.gov.au/about-the-library/ - Can't visit a branch or want to use our eLibrary from home? Become a Library Member for instant access. Our library is a place that is open, accessible, inclusive, and free to all residents of Victoria.
@TheLibrarian: I'm in Qld. We've only just discovered the Beegees up here so it's likely we're a long way behind on the e-rights front as well.
@rainynight65: To be able to access other libraries check out r/libbylibby on Reddit. This way you can have several library cards
Thanks 👍 Use Libby, great app. Except for magazines that I have to renew every 7x days
Amazing series, highly recommended.
Up to book 8 right now. It becomes very drawn out but still a fun read.
This might have to be my next listen after finishing stormlight archive.
Journey before destination fellow radiant
Love this series, i was so happy when it got made into a great TV show. If you like politics, semi-hard sci fi and for the first book, a hardboiled detective story, you will love it as much as I do.
Loved the first series of the show but for some reason couldn't get into the 2nd one. It's on my list to have another go after I've got a few others out of the way.
I found most of S1 pretty janky to be honest; the later episodes were dope though. It sorta just keeps getting better and better from there, season 4 being my favourite for spoiler reasons involving depictions of far away planets!! Honestly, with their limited sort of budget i always thought they managed to make something really compelling. For instance, it is miles better than the new Star Trek, which probably has 10x the budget.
There aren't many shows with such an expansive universe that the first half of the first season isn't all over the place. I can accept that for what it is.
I haven't tried the new Star Trek yet, nor have I watched any of the Star Wars expanded universe stuff. The lesson I learnt with Marvel's expansion into TV was wait until a series has ended before committing to it b/c most will likely end early with storylines left hanging.
Maybe the lesson for producers is stop pitching 12-24 episode seasons that risk cancellation and just start with a self-contained miniseries or two. Expand as demand increases or accept that those are the only stories you get to tell about those characters.
Is that..
a hardboiled detective story
within the scifi context!?
And is Miller more developed as a character in the novels?
Miller is a detective cliche in the novels, but he has a funny self awareness about it. He is "people clever", and has an eye for patterns, is depressed, alcoholic, divorced, hahaha. IIRC half the book is actually Miller's POV. IDK how much about the series you know but without spoilers, he turns into a fascinating character, and is a good pessimistic counterpoint to Holden's naivete.
I'm just over half way through Cibola Burn. They're great audiobooks so far. Jefferson Mays does an incredible job. I watched the show a few years back, and will probably go through another watch after I finish the books.
Any recommendations on something similar and good?
I hear Red Rising is good, but I'm not sure how similar it is.
They very, very different.
I'm not sure what i'd even say for something similar to Expanse
Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds is fantastic, similar feel, does better on the science side IMO.
Red rising series is great - Expanse meets hunger games. Expeditionary force is really good, The mercy of the gods (the start of a new series by SA Corey). Project Hail Mary. All these audiobooks have the best narration.
Expeditionary Force is amazing in audiobook but I think they'd be just as great in ebook/conventional format as well, because you wouldn't have the narrator interfering with your imagination.
I'm currently doing the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. It's a very different setting, part sci-fi & part fantasy, but the humour is definitely on the same level. Princess Donut is easily Skippy the Magnificent's equal, even if she's a very different character.
Good series but after reading the last 3 books kinda glad they ended it when they did.
1-7 were good, 8 was OK, but getting through 9 was starting to feel a bit like a chore and way into weird concepts for me.
Really? Book 9 was probably 2nd best book of the series
I thought I read somewhere season 7 had finally been approved after being "paused" due to budget?
Miller is one of the worst written characters in any series I've ever read….
However that's more than made up for by Amos, who is one of the best written and most likeable characters.
Great series, each book is better than the last.
So Miller is better in the show?
I just finished rewatch and to me, Amos is the muscle 💪, a loose nut, uncontrollable, crazy, but he fit in with the crew. I did feel like they tried to develop his story throughout the show to the last few seasons but I just don't think you can add much depth to that type of guy - sometimes I thought his character was similar to Lennie from mice of men.
Easily the best book in the series (I've only read the first 6 though), well worth a read/listen.
