  • Need to apply visa…

  • That's a dang good price for direct flights. Highly recommend chengdu. Heaps to do.

    • Its the 'Home of the Pandas'

      • The panda zoo was definitely a highlight, but jiuzhaigou was the bestest

      • +1

I prefer the name of home of spicy food (and numb)

  • -2

Better yet, hop on a bus and go to Western Sichuan. Tibet without the erosion of culture and with generally free movement.

  • Also the one stop price to Harbin nd especially Urumqi are especially good. Both gateways to very interesting parts of China

  • +1

what's there to do in chengdu? juizhaigou. is it worth the travel? we won't do chinese tours and prefer to travel independently but its nerve wrecking when i barely speak chinese. was chengdu an imperial city?

kunming is good. i really want to do lijiang.

what's there at harbin and urumqi?

still have not visited beijing. but we went to hangzhou this year n was so impressed with the ppl n cleanliness. hangzhou, suzhou, overnight tongli and shanghai. so beautiful. we were able to get around on our own fine.

no tour is more exxy but the experience was so much better. can stay at more central hotels and even sleep in.

    • Authentic Sichuan food in chengdu

If you don't have the language skill, really not good idea to travel alone anywhere in China. I am Chinese, I feel uncomfortable If I travel outside my home city. Too many scandals too many craziness.

      • Yes and no. Hong Kong and Shanghai is fine for a westerner to travel alone. Other than that, I agree, without out a translator it will be difficult anywhere else within China.

        • People say this constantly. I would disagree. China can be frustrating but a very interesting place.

        • @sambutler9876:

I have very very basic mandarin. extremely bad. the taxi driver kept telling me how awful my mandarin was for the whole 1 hr journey. surprisingly people were really nice and kind to us and very helpful. we had a very good impression of china from our short visit. when you don't join tours and book better centralized hotels, the concierge can usually speak good English which helps a lot.

the most important thing is to have the places you want to go to written in Chinese. when I bought a bus ticket, my pronunciation was way off and as a result we caught a bus to the wrong city! but it wasn't too bad…just made the journey an hr longer.

But I think with my crappy mandarin it's enough to get by. I just said Tai Gui la and was able to bargain. So funny. Honestly didn't feel too much out of my comfort zone. Love Shanghai's Xintiandi area. It's a nice balance. We picked one garden in Suzhou and that was more than enough, we then explored the laneways, cobbled streets and canals and ate a lot. When we arrived at Suzhou station, there were a lot of hustling from tour operators and it seemed like they think people want value for money and to jam pack as many attractions as possible in a short time. There was no way we could see 3 different gardens and the tiger leaping pagoda. Instead we, left luggage at station, caught a taxi for like aud$2 to one of the gardens. It wasn't too busy but once it got busy with heaps of noisy tour groups, we left. Suzhou is really clean and beautiful, especially the old part. It was great just walking around and getting lost. Eating from street stalls and going to cafes etc In afternoon we taxi back to station, got luggage and taxi to Tongli. By the time we got there about 4:00pm we practically had the water town to ourselves. All the tour groups had left. In the morning, we left about 11am and omg the tour groups arriving was scary.

I think if you travel independently you will have a better time.

I read that in jiuzhaigou there's around 45k ppl each day in autumn. I don't know if I can handle the crowds. especially Chinese crowds lol it will be hard to take a photo.

        • @sal78: I haven't been to Jiuzhaigou. But I'm not to fond of Chinese national parks. I'd imagine it would be very like Zhangjiajie, which while incredibly beautiful is just way way to crowded. This is why I avoided Changbaishan a few months ago when I was in Dongbei - simply because the crowds in the most famous Chinese parks can be insane.

        • +1

@sal78: go in the dead of winter. No crowds

    • Jiuzhaigou is awesome. Long ass bus trip there though, and accommodation is scarce. Winter is good because not so many people go there. There's a great hostel in chengdu called traffic stop or something. English speaking staff. There's also one in jiuzhaigou with English speaking staff. Its freezing in winter.

      Panda zoo is fantastic too.

The most trouble you'll have is at hot pot restaurants. Pretty important to go with someone Chinese.

      • hot pot? no offals or anything blood!

it's 3000rmb to hold a baby panda for 2mins. and cash only lol

        • +1

I had a good enough time just taking photos and watching the baby panda show

Uruqmi is capital of XInjiang province. Uruqmi doesn't have much itself, but it is the gateway to the rest of the province with places like Kashgar, Hotan, Yakard incredibly interesting.

Harbin is most famous in winter for the ice festival. I have not been in winter, but was in Hotan a few months ago. Its a very very interesting city, as it was Russian, was the largest Jewish settlement in the East, was occupied by the Japanese. The whole of the Dongbei (meaning Northeast) is very interesting.

I don't speak any Chinese beyond counting to ten and I've travelled to China four times.

As for Beijing, I do like the place a lot. Although I didn't get there until to my 3rd trip to China. After 4 trips I still haven't been to Shanghai, Hangzhou or Guangdong.

      • surely if you can count to 10 you can count to 1000! there are only a few phrases you really need to know.

I was lucky that I met a lady who can't speak Cantonese but could understand. so we were able to communicate for 2 hrs eventhough it was very very poor on my part. She helped us locate our inn in tongli (I don't think we would of found it!), took us to 3 diff banks until 1 worked because we ran out of cash!, and she gave us a personal tour around tongli and took pics for us and recommended her friend's house for dinner….it was amazing and we invited her to eat with us. we were so blown away by such nice and friendly ppl throughout our short trip.

Do they fly Chinese military aircraft? Or do they photograph the East China Sea enroute?

    • The engines are powered by the bullshit their government talks. Do you know it?

  • I'm here to read those funny comments. 😏

  • Make sure you check out a place called Sertar, google picture will give you an idea of how stunning this place is, my favourite place in Sichuan, jiuzhaigou is good but always packed with people and that ridiculously expensive entry fee will drive you crazy. Sertar is yet a popular destination but the experience will definitely make up the trip

    • sertar! thank you… my mum went to juizhaigou a few yrs ago. she didn't even walk up because she was too lazy. it was beautiful but she said too busy.

  • Air China is one of the lowest quality of service airline. For God's sake don't ruin your trip mood by staying away from this mob. South China Airline is much much better.

    • What makes China Southern better than Air China?

      • Less goats and chickens on board

  • Do the Chinese split in the streets in China? Or is that just an Australia thing?

    • Yea.. Getting less common though. Usually just older people
