telstra sim card is better, always 50% off or more

    • please elaborate?

      • buy telstra starter pack at coles sometimes has 50% off. used the credit to buy stuffs on google play.

        • edit

        • -2

Thats been cancelled now. No longer applicable

        • @albanyson: EDIT: I see below you have already discovered that it's only the Freedom Plus that has been cancelled :)

        • +1

          @PBG:
          Very helpful to know.!

        • @albanyson: Absolutely :) The dream is still alive… sort of…

    • +5

The main plan prepaid plus doesn't come with recharge cred anymore :( :(
The other plans do but don't have much calls and data

      • +1

yeah but i only use all the credit for google store

        • +4

I think what he meant is that the new telstra plans don't come with credit that is usuable on google play store

I.e. you can no longer get telstra prepaid freedom plus

        • -4

@alabatusa: yeah but i never say anything about plan.

      • Are there any restrictions when using the telstra sim method? Im assuming you can make any in app purchases as well?

    • -4

      Get with the times please.

    • Don't know why you're getting negged, statement is completely valid. Telstra starter packs are regularly $15 for $30 Google Play credit. Forget the removal of the Freedom Plus option, the other prepaid options still provide the $30 Google Play credit.

Compare 50% off on Google Play to this deal at 20% off (which also has no call credits) and the Telstra packs are a far better proposition.

      • @PBG, well, lots of mystery in humans' life including getting negs randomly on ozb.

      • How can I tell if the pack can be used for google play credit?

        • +1

It has a big "Telstra" on the front

        • +1

          @PBG:
Uh it's all plans except for Prepaid Plus.
Just because it has Telstra doesn't mean it has credit for it..

        • @cwongtech: I was being facetious :)

In fact every Telstra starter pack you buy has the ability to become Google Credit. There are no Telstra starter packs that can only be activated on the Prepaid Plus option.

        • +7

          @cwongtech:
The prepaid plan to be used isn't determined by the SIM card purchased - the user can choose from any one of Telstra's prepaid plans when connecting, and it's up to them to select one that will give Google Play credit.

@Melmac77: The $30 prepaid packs are commonly sold for $15 or less, which is where the best value is. When you activate the SIM, select any offer except "Prepaid Plus." You can then activate carrier billing and use your $30 of Telstra credit to pay for Google Play content.

        • @klaw81: Thank You

      • Depends on your version of regular.

      • It's Telstra billing not Google Credit. Similar but with some restrictions. Such as max $100 purchase and a hassle to add up as can only transfer $10 from one sim to another per 24hr period. Also doesn't seem to allow mixed payments (telstra billing and google play credit for same transaction).

      • Ahhhh, thanks. It's just the freedom plus whoch is no longer valid. That's helpful to know.

    • Does this work if you don't use telstra?

      • +3

Yes, you don't have to use the SIM to actually make calls, or leave it in your phone once you're done. You can keep using your other SIM afterwards.

However, you will need to have the Telstra SIM in your phone to activate your prepaid offer, enable carrier billing and spend the credit.

        • leave it in your phone once you're done.

So after I have the credit in my Google Play account I don't need it anymore, right?

Can I buy another one next time when on special and credit to my same Google play account?

        • +1

This is very helpful. I've ignored previous Telstra deals since I'm with another telco. I'll look out for them now.

          Thanks!

        • Thanks😊

        • @superforever: Yes, except you don't credit it to your Google account. When you spend on Google Play and choose Telstra Billing as the payment option a special SMS message is sent to your phone and intercepted by the Telstra SIM in your phone. I couldn't get it to work on my phone (Xiaomi Redmi Note 2) but could use the credit by putting the SIM into an old Samsung phone and making the purchase there.

        • @Dacs:

Thanks, I do have a Telstra Tempo bought long time ago.

Any good Telstra deal at the moment?

        • @superforever: Not right now but there usually are a couple every month. Otherwise if you have an Amex card you can probably get a $30 SIM for $20 in November with the Shop Small Promotion.

        • So there are Telstra plans that don't expire every 30 days then? I haven't looked at these before as I also am not with Telstra but now it's been explained it seems grabbing a 50% off sim is the way to go……. Assuming it is possible to have one that doesn't expire or require recharging for quite some time once activated.

      • +2

You need to have the SIM in a phone when making a purchase on google play. You don't need it all the times. You can even use the same SIM with different google accounts (but not simultaneously i.e "Bill telstra" should be in the list of payment methods of one and only one google account).

Very rarely on sale. Great find. Thanks OP

  • Good find, going to store some.

  • +4

It should be noted that these do NOT work for buying devices off the play store.

  • +1

can you pay for Netflix with these?

    • -1

      Doesn't seem possible unfortunately;
      https://help.netflix.com/en/node/42992

    • +3

You should be able to - I can't see why not (despite the advice above).
I believe there are lots of people using Telstra credit to fund their Netflix sub, so it should be much the same.

You can pay for Netflix sub via Google Play credit, as seen here:
      https://www.engadget.com/2016/04/27/netflix-google-play-bill…

      So the steps should be:
      a) Buy Play Store gift card
      b) Redeem gift card in Google Play (https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/3422659?hl=en)
      c) Pay for Netflix using Google Play credit
      d) Profit?

      • Pay for Netflix using Google Play credit

Can you please elaborate on the above?

        • +1

You can pay for subscriptions to various services (magazines, VPNs, streaming services etc) through Google's Play Store as a recurring payment, in much the same way you'd pay for an app or movie rental. A few months back, Netflix started accepting monthly subscription fees on Android via the Play Store, rather than a credit card.

As with all Play Store purchases, you can pay for content via any of the three methods:
          a) Credit card
          b) Google Play credit (gift cards, promotions etc)
          c) Carrier billing (if your carrier allows it)

You can set your Netflix subscription to debit your Play credit every month instead of using your credit card. This allows you to take advantage of 20% offers like this deal and get an effective 20% off the cost of Netflix.

If you're using a compatible Telstra prepaid offer (ie anything other than Prepaid Plus) and recharge on a regular basis, you can use some of your prepaid credit to pay for your Netflix subscription via carrier billing. If you buy $30 prepaid SIM packs when they're on special for $15, you can effectively get your Netflix subscription for 50% less.

        • Pay for Netflix through the android app. I don't use netflix so not sure if it works.

      • I don't see an option to pay using Google Play credit anywhere in the app :(

Tapping my account just takes you to a browser window which only lets you update a credit card or change to PayPal. Perhaps it's only available to new Netflix accounts.

    • Went to renew my sub last week and was able to pay with Google Play/carrier billing.

      • How did you do that? I can't find an option anywhere to switch to Google Play credit for billing.

        • Try waiting for it to expire. That's when it showed up for me.

officeworks pricematch should be possible for an extra 5% discount. if ordering over $55 they will deliver for free too

    • Does anyone know if Officeworks will actually price match these?
Looking to buy probably $100 worth?

      • you can call them - they pricematch over the phone for online orders

      • -1

Officeworks doesnt match gift cards in my experience

      • +1

Can confirm price match at Officeworks Rutherford this morning.
Also got the 5% price match discount as well.

Got $110 worth of cards for $83.60.

        • did they limit you to only buying 3 cards? while coles limit to 5cards

        • @Ruriko:

Sorry, only just saw your comments.

          I only purchased 3cards, 1x $50, 2x $30.

          So not sure.

Didn't appear to be any signage indicating restrictions though.

  • Great find thanks OP. Just in time to top up for my UtubeRed subs.

amazing, yes some people can concentrate on games they enjoy and not follow the rest of the sheep moving from current fad to meme etc.

      • +4

People stop playing their games after a few weeks?

There's another iOS one but can't remember the name as I don't use Apple devices

        • @cwongtech: What? I've been using trackers fine ever since the game came out.

        • @nismo:
So much for Niantic's letters :)

          @Orpheus:
Oh. I thought when pokevision stopped, that was the end of it.. Guess not >=]

        • @nismo: I think they meant in game tracking which is still absent.

          @thescarecrow84:
I did mean that in terms of the footsteps and whether you're close to a pokemon.. but I did miss pokevision :(

          Hail Hydra!

  • I wonder what the profit margins are on rebatr

    • +1

      Wouldnt it be 15%?
      55% payback rate
70% payment from Google Play face value purchase to Developer.

      • didn't know that, so they get 70% interesting. So i disputed google play charges once and got instant refund, I wonder who takes that hit should someone complain

  • Never seen 20% off before at Coles.

  • wish Google Play gift card be on discount as often as iTunes.

    • +1

Agreed. But Android apps are cheaper by 20% typically anyway

      • i did not do the comparison. probably they are. but the game credit is usually the same across different platforms and ios credit seems to be easy to obtain through itunes gift card deals.

as people said above, using telstra credit is a good workaround if you know how-about.

  • +3

Sweet, 20% off Google Play Music/YouTube Red.

    • Yep, same! And I'm on the $10 a month deal also.

      • Can we get this deal too?

        • You needed to have signed up before a certain time. I've had it since 2013, when $10 was standard for most music subscription services. Think they jacked up the price in 2014.

  • I just redeemed the Google Play Credit and the following offer popped up:

"Enjoy 25% off any movie rental in the Play Store. Offer limited to recipients of Google Play gift cards purchased between August 8 and September 30 2016. Nontransferable. No cash value. Redeem offer by October 30 2016."

    • This still works.
"Offer limited to recipients of Google Play gift cards purchased between October 1 and December 31 2016. Nontransferable. No cash value. Redeem offer by January 30 2017"

  • Google Play Credit has no expiry date right? I purchased $50 card yesterday and I saw expiry date 30/10/2016 before confirmation. I believe it was related with 25% movie rental offer, but not 100% sure.

    • I was going to buy 2 x $50 cards for $80 and then some food or another $20 card for a total of $100 and then get $15 off my spend for a total of $85! Winning! :D

      • +1

$100 towards $15 off excludes all gift cards unless you found a workaround?

        • +1

Correct, tried, excluded, as identified by emwolf. Would not work.
+ added in with eligible food items ($20+) has 0 effect.

Still bought (2x50) @ ~21.6% (nice, although not '32 %' ) using final opportunity with INGd 2% +a few cents 'coin.

        • @daver: Same here! Yes, it didn't work but I called Flybuys and they agreed to do it as a one time thingy! :)

    • +2

@reservin, just found "Gift Card value expires 2 years following the date of (1) card issuance, or (2) last activity on Google Play stored value account into which the card is redeemed, whichever is later. " not the greatest news there

      • What do you mean not the greatest news..

Gift Card value expires 2 years following the date of… last activity on Google Play stored value account into which the card is redeemed

Google Opinion rewards gives you like 20c every time you go into a westfield. That counts as "last activity", effectively resetting the expiry date :)

      • Thanks for the tip wasn't aware and will be sure to follow it up - seeming a quick method to get this expiry date bumped. Permit Google to track my location so prepared to add opinion data on.
