AmEx Statement Credit: Spend $20 on Android Pay, Get $10 Credit (AmEx Issued Cards)

2970

They did it for Apple Pay, they did it for Samsung Pay, now it's Android Pay's turn! Just found it in my AMEX app. If you can't find it/don't want to install the app, the link I've provided has an enrol button.

If you are getting this message:
"Unfortunately this campaign is by invitation only. Please visit http://www.amexconnect.com.au for other fabulous offers"
Then you are attempting to add a bank-issued AMEX and thus cannot take advantage of this deal (thanks to various commenters below but Turd in particular for his detailed reasoning) for noting this. It has to be an AMEX-issued card.

Also if your Android phone is rooted, you can't use Android Pay. Might be able to get around it if you search for solutions?

Copied and pasted:

  • Save the offer to your eligible Card and tap to pay with Android Pay spending $20 or more on that Card, in one or more transactions, in store by 20/10/16 to receive one $10 credit. Limited to the first 10,000 Cards to save the offer.
  • Only American Express issued Cards are eligible for this offer.
  • You must have a compatible Android Device and your Card must be enrolled in Android Pay. More information about Android Pay, including how to add your Card, is available here.
  • Offer is limited to one credit per registered Card. Only spend on the Card you register counts towards the Offer.
  • Card Members can spend using Android Pay in store at any merchant in Australia that accepts American Express contactless payments. Examples of stores which accept contactless transactions from American Express are available here.
  • Excludes online purchases. Offer valid at Australian locations only.
  • Credit is not redeemable for cash or other payment forms.
  • Credit should appear on your billing statement within 5 business days from qualifying spend but may take up to 90 days from offer end date.

Similar info from the Amex Android Pay FAQs

Do I need to have an active internet connection for Android Pay to work?

An active internet connection is not required to make in-store purchases. There is a limited number of transactions permitted during a period without internet access (usually five), after which your device will need an internet connection to make additional authorisations. You will also need an active internet connection to activate the app or add a new Card.

  • I tried using it at maccas today and it didnt work (declined), so I tried at coles afterwards and it worked fine.

    • yeah maccas says comming soon

      • Yeah on the amex page where it lists the participating stores, maccas logo is listed, but on the android pay page, it is listed as coming soon…

  • Has anyone successfully received a statement credit after making a purchase at 7-Eleven?

  • Do you have to enable something to allow Android Pay?

Using Xperia Z5, downloaded the app, added Amex card, but for the second time at Coles the Eftpos machine didn't recognise the "tap". (I actually received a notification as I walked in to the store that says I can use Android Pay here).

NFC is enabled, as I can scan an Opal card.

    • Found a possible answer here (to be confirmed): https://support.google.com/androidpay/answer/6289427

Need to set Android Pay in Tap & Pay settings.

      • +1

That is probably it - as i also experienced (see comment)

    • For the third time Android Pay didn't work at Coles, but this time with a different error.

Previously it was the Eftpos machine not accepting it (no error from the phone).

Today the error came from the app, it says "This card can't be used, AMEX-xxxx can't be used with Android Pay right now. Please use a different card or try again later."

It was at a quiet time and the cashier was super patient, I restarted the phone and also removed and re-added an Amex issued Amex card by Amex Australia.

      It doesn't f***ing work!

      • Okay, finally worked today. Would have gave up long ago if not for the statement credit.

        • Do you know why? Is it something you need to change in the setup of the app, etc? Thanks. But good you finally got it to work.

        • +1

No, I did not do anything different.

Maybe there was a network error at the time, but the actual Amex card worked.

The other possibility could be due to the Google Play prepaid card in the transaction. Maybe Google Play cannot be paid by Google Pay. Or transactions approved by Google Pay cannot activate gift cards in general, just a guess.

        • @browser:

Just had same msg at woolies. Ive tried it at woolies once before already so i know it worked there before. This time it kept saying my card number couldnt work at this time and no reasons why. Definitely doesn't instill peace of.mind of not carrying my wallet - no thank you.

That said i was trying to just get my $20 amaysim voucher for the cashback. But really it shouldn't even matter what im buying. If not for the cashback promo i shoule be able to use the card for anything. Not sure if ill bother going out to woolies again just to try.

          Or does 7/11 work?

  • I'm struggling to find a place that takes AMEX and has the machine that works with Android pay

So Coles is the way to go?

    • Yep, I've tried 3 different 7-Eleven stores with no luck - machine displays 'CTLESS ERR 26'.

After a bit of searching I found this, which somewhat confirmed my experience: https://support.google.com/androidpay/answer/6289427?hl=en-A…

So yeah, Coles works for me, and I'd say Woolworths would too. They're your safe bets.

      EDIT: Same link browser provided.

      • Thanks I also tried bunnings today it works!

    • So Coles is the way to go?

Kmart worked for me today (friday 30th Sept 2016 )

  • Anyone got their credit yet? I got the email Tuesday but no credit yet.

    • Yes

      • Is the credit applied to the purchase that you did just before you got the email?

        • Not in my case

I'm having trouble adding my supplementary cards to my phone. I already used 2 of primaries and 2 supps successfully and got emails, but can't add any more supplementary cards. They get to the verification stage and then fail to be added. Tried it several times so there is now a bunch of $2 verifications from google services, in addition to the ones from adding the other cards. All the supplementary cards are in other family members names, but not everyone has an android. Is anybody else having this problem? Might have to use another phone/google account to add them then. In hindsight, I probably should have added all of them in one go and get them all verified successfully instead of one at a time.

    • I did, then I tried re-adding the cards & they said they were already there.
Then I restart my toy opened the Android Pay app, my default card was there & below it was 3 cards sitting on top of each other (so all 4 cards show up).

    • Hi,not sure if you got your issue fixed. I got the same thing as well, but I got mine fixed today.
You can just log in the account for each supplementary card and use Amex live chat, then they will fix it for you.

      I'm not new; I just don't post deals …

  • Anyone ha ing issues at Coles (or anywhere) with a bad read try tapping the bottom-back or your phone.

    • That's not advice for everyone. Every phone has their NFC chip in a different location. Mine is underneath my camera

  • "Also if your Android phone is rooted, you can't use Android Pay. Might be able to get around it if you search for solutions?"
    yes root using Magisk.

  • Still no luck using this at bunnings the terminal picks up the phone but then says "Present Card No Contactless" happened to me multiple times now at different retailers, kinda feel a bit stupid pulling out my wallet. I suspect its an AMEX thing back in the days of using the physical card at some terminals you had to tap then swipe, then insert to use the stupid thing.

I had the same issue at Coles, bunnings and others. After researching I found a banking app was specified as the default payment method in android settings. I haven't got to try again since adjusting my settings but hopefully it will work now.

Try going to Settings > Networks > Share and Connect > NFC > Tap and Pay

Then set Android Pay as your default app.

      Hope this helps!

      • Hi, I have a galaxy s4 which I've updated os to 5.0, I can't see the following setting option, I can only see Nfc to switch on or off, I can't see any tap and pay? Can you please help, does this mean tap and go will not work? Thanks

      • Thank you for this info.I was thinking what would happen if one has both Android Pay and Samsung Pay installed.

      • Hi, just confirming it worked at Coles after making the change I mentioned. I'm not sure about Android 5. In Android 6, NFC has an on/off switch but if I press on the panel/wording instead it takes me into the options for NFC.

  • Hi, I installed the app twice and have been charged $2 each time by Google, did this happen to anyone else and will this be refunded?

    • +1

Yes and yes. It's just checking that the card exists.

      • +1

        Thank you.

  • looks like the easiest for me will be heading down to coles (or woolies) where I think I've tried android pay already once when it first came out a few weeks back on my xperia z3.

Will probably get my usual $40 amaysim credit :D Does anyone know if the terms and conditions do not allow mobile phone credit? I found this in the T & C but i'd argue mobile recharge vouchers aren't a payment form per se?

"Credit is not redeemable for cash or other payment forms.
Credit should appear on your billing statement within 5 business days from qualifying spend but may take up to 90 days from offer end date."

    • They can't tell what you bought at Woolies, so phone credit is fine.

      • good point. i thought they would be able to look through what you were buying i.e if you were buying visa credit card prepaids. but guess not.

        will try tomorrow!

      • Just tried to buy my $20 amaysim voucher on two woolies self service and both wouldn't work! Kept getting the error msg as per another commenter above where 'my american express card #xxxx' could not be used right now.

No explanations nothing. Very annoyed that i wasted my time going out of my way to woolies for it. I know it worked before at that exact same woolies. Only diff was i was doing groceries and not just a recharge voucher.

Still, it shouldnt even be a mention whatever i buy, it should just be a flawless paymwnt method regardless of what you pay for.

Certainly won't be going wallet-less anytime soon.

Anyone found the reason why it hasn't been working or i get this error msg? Esp since ive setup and used the card once before at this same woolies.

  • thanks
