    • Did you go to the one on Gertrude St? There are some others close by that don't have Myki top up/don't take AMEX.

  • Boronia heights pharmacy does not accept Amex for myki top up, may save yourself a trip.

    Opal top ups on 21/11:
    1. City Convenience 614 George $1
    2. City Convenience 1/525 George $1
    3. The Lucky Charm 580 George St, Pavilion $2 - Walked
    4. City Convenience 1/379-383 Pitt $1

    6. City Convenience 1/419 Pitt $2 - Walked
    7. Wu's Pharmacy $0.50

    • City Convenience 1/525 George

People have been saying they haven't been getting emails nor cashback since about 11 November. Did you get an email?

      World Square Newsagency

Is that what they told you? Because I'd trust the official list more than them simply verbally trying to deter you

Good on ya for walking from the $2 ones. You can report them too on takeamex.com.au

      You didn't try any Ezymarts?

      • Got credits for 1/525 George. Took 2 weeks since original transaction but Amex seems to have manually credited it in bulk without me having to contact them about it. My guess is enough people have contacted them regarding that one?

  • Does anyone know the opening hours of the following CBD places?

    • King of the Pack (888 Wholly Tobacconist) - Shop 26/61 Oxford St
    • Oxford St Newsagency - 1/18-32 Oxford St
    • Connaught Newsagency - 187 Liverpool St
    • Darling Park newsagency - 201 Sussex St
    • Darling Harbour View Convenience - Suite 24, 5A Erskine St
    • B&J newsagency - 187 Thomas St

I would assume City Convenience are pretty much all 24/7

    • +1

I think Darling Park Newsagency is open during business hours only (since it sits in a business park/building) - something like 9-5/6 Mon-Fri.
Connaught Newsagency is open til about 5.30 on weekdays, and only til about 12 on Sat, closed on Sunday (well it was last year).

    Updates:

368 Sussex St (Shop name is "Convenience Store" on the corner of Liverpool St & Sussex St) was pretty smooth. Guy was pretty friendly/welcoming.
    Surcharge: $1
    Merchant name: GROCERY ZONE SUSSEX
    Paypass: Not for AMEX

Millenium Convenience Store was smooth. Guy there was neutral friendliness but was willing to help.
    Surcharge: $1
    Merchant name: MILLENIUM CONVIENENCE STORE
    Paypass: Yes

Mirna Convenience Store 69 Liverpool Street the guy still said machine not working, and therefore cannot accept card payments for Opal top ups. Guy was smiley/friendly-ish though.. but don't bloody do top ups for Opal if it's losing you so much money. And don't participate in Shop Small.

Grocery Zone 44 Park Street still saying cash only for Opal unless you buy something. Tried being a smartass again by saying I'd buy $2 SIMs. This guy was having none of it (said "SIM cards don't count"). Neutral friendliness.

How can we update the Ozbargain maintained Google Maps list? Some places need updating.

    • +1

Thanks for your detailed lists. I pretty much followed it, things to mention: 368 Sussex St said machine is not working and I haven't received emails from Millenium (not that I care about emails).

Across the street Mirna there's another city convenience at 86 Liverpool St. Have you tried them?

      • Did you give Mirna a try too?

I'm assuming the City Convenience 86 Liverpool St is the newish looking one at the corner of Kent St and Liverpool St? I looked at it. Tried finding a Shop Small logo - couldn't find it. Tried finding it on the official map - couldn't find it. Tried finding it on the Ozbargain maintained list - couldn't find it. So my conclusion was that it wasn't part of the promotion and I didn't bother.

I got emails for Millennium, just as a point of reference.

How can we update the Ozbargain maintained Google Maps list? Some places need updating.

Sorry, I'm doing this but with all the stuff going on this week it's in my sitting on my to-do list. I'll update it shortly.

      • Ok cool. I was more wondering if there was a way that we could update it ourselves (like the wiki) but didn't think so cause I guess it's owned by someone and might get too messy if it was free for all.

Safeway Souvenirs & Convenience - 25-27 South Steyne Manly - used 5 different Amex cards to top-up Opal, no surcharge and no questions asked.

Just realized some of these lotto and newsagent places do Eastlink Breeze account top up. Minimum is $30. I made a rough list covering mostly Melbourne CBD. I went to The News Centre in Bentleigh and they accepted AMEX, not sure on the others.

    EAST LINK TOPUP:
    The News Center, Bentleigh
    Malvern Authorized Newsagency
    Newsagent 500, Melbourne CBD
    The Source Newsaganet, Melbourne CBD
QV News and Lotto, Melbourne CBD
    Southgate News & Lotto, Southbank

    • My breeze account is on direct debit. How do you top up at the shop?

      • I printed my account statement. It has a barcode on it but all they needed was the account number to type into their EFTPOS machine.

        • Thanks for the tip. I'll have to do a small run tomorrow.

        • @bluedufflecoat: Let us know if you get the credit. I never did, not even the email.

        • @JIMB0: I never got around to doing it! But if their shop is listed and they don't give you the credit, write to them and ask. I used my card at Ramenya at Emporium today. No email. I'll give it a few days and send a query in 5 days if nothing turns up.

        • @bluedufflecoat: I used the card at another small shop last night and got the email. That would make a total of 11 small shops on the card so I don't think I'd get the credit anyway.

Finally managed to do all my 50 shop small transactions including 44 opal top ups, took me a while because i did not do more than 2 top up per visit to a shop as it kind of motivated me to go for long walks around CBD in my lunch time. Pretty happy with the savings, thanks OP, Thydzik, Neil and other oz bargainers commenting on this thread for helping me find shops with smallest surcharge.

    • +1

What??? 44 of top ups = $880 of opal money LOL

      • +3

I actually got more than $1200 balance on 6 cards at the moment, before November did 10 transactions in sept shop small weekend, before that I think 12 transactions at local BP $40 top up each and before that another 5 in May shop small weekend. Also managed to do 37 transactions last year shop small, so thanks to Amex haven't had to pay full price for opal top up in a year. Of course opal bus runs helped stretch my balance further till sept this year.

      • +1

I've done 63 so far. 7 more to go :)

        • +1

HahahaHAA!!! Cool. how you can use that much credits. Worth probably more than couple of years for me!!!

          And anyone top that record

          LOL

        • +1

          I've done 148 lol
Technically have 82 remaining that I can do

        • @illumination: 148 opal top ups?

        • @lokesh7: Nope 148 overall. I've spread it out a little bit, but it's probably 75% opal top ups?

        • @illumination: still pretty good effort.

  • I have done 52 with no transport top ups, would like to get to my limit of 80 but not sure if I will get there. I don't use public transportation that much and my myki is topped up from last time. Mostly it has been fruit and veg and some stuff from the chemist. I did get some glasses from Bailey Nelson and paid with 5 cards though.

    • This is some serious effort. well done mate

  • Victoria Harbour Pharmacy - Myki topup 1 amex per person.

  • Daffey's Pharmacy in Footscray does not accept any credit card for Myki recharge, stating that Myki only gives them 5 cents per top up so they take cash only for it.

    • +2

That doesn't seem right - no shop would do top-ups if they only got 5c.

      • +2

I second that, 5 cents is BS

  • just went to Stalactites in Melb CBD, immediately got confirmation email.
    No charge so great offer.

    • How is the food?

      • the souvlakis are very good. one of the best that you get in CBD..
usually around 12.50 for a takeaway so i effectively paid $15 for two..

        • Love Stalactites. That used to be my after pub eating place no matter where I was in the city.

          Mixed dips, 2 breads. Heaven.

        • Cool, going there on Monday!

    • I went t stalactites spent $52 and got a $10 rebate the next day….didnt even know stalactites was participating!!

    • Any where else good in the cbd Melbourne?

      • i went to cafe kinetic today its in flinders lane between exhibition n russel

        • just search for cafe and post code 3000 and you will get a long list of cafes.
tazio is another nice place but a little expensive..

  • Discussed the promotion with a milk bar owner. She reckon Amex charges the shop about 70 cents for 20 dollars, as fees went up receintly. So definitely Amex is rebating the 10 dollars. For the disgraceful charges of $1 fee or not accepting Amex shops, Shame on you. Shame on you. We do not need you as consumers!

  • My favourite places in sunny Brisbane:

    Go card top up:
    George Street news
    South bank beach news
    Chermiside nextra
    Aspley day and night news

All are friendly, no surcharge (thank God i am in Qld). I did 2 cards max. In one time..

    Groceries :
    Shree Balaji, Runcorn
    Swadesh, Sunnybank

    Others:

Punjabi Palace, South Brisbane (chicken tandoori takeaways)

    Hungry Jacks Aspley

    Compounding pharmacy, Brindle

    30 done, still 30 to do…

  • I want to apply for more Amex cards, but want to avoid annual fees unless the annuals feed cards can bring value. I remember I read somewhere on the website that there is a whole list of diff Amex card types with pros and cons. I cannot find it now. Can some show a link? I also remember there is a place on the website collecting all the bargain tips, is it the wiki?

  • Just a heads up. Shops in Sydney CBD got greedy upping to $2 surcharge for Opal top up.
    Did these today 25Nov
    Ezy mart 20 King st.
    Fastway Convenience 4/27 Park St.

Whereas local ones like King of Pack Padstow only 40c and Nexta Newsagent Chatswood $1.

    • +2

They charged $2 surcharge yet you still did it? You could've (should've?) walked away and reported them.

      • I saw a few asians continue with the $2 when i was at fastway at townhall. Think those that got reported are removed from the map. Couldnt find fastway or mimi pty ltd for me unless i searched incorrectly. I walked out and spent it on dining in nearby restaurants. Didnt do any opal recharge at those $2 surcharge convenience stores. They want easy money, doing lesser work and surfing web. Those paying $2 are covering those that didnt top up and walked. Dont think amex bothered to speak to each of them. Removing them from map might be quickest and to answer to cardholders.

      • +1

Yes, I could have. But didn't really have the time to explore other places. Only in the CBD for short period.

Anyway, reported them to Amex already.

  • I am in Melbourne east today. Box Hill through to Ringwood areas. Any good recommendations for lunch with shop small?

  • At least these excessive surcharges from small retailers will be illegal next time, from 1 September 2017.

    • +1

I didn't think that applies to American express as they are not a bank.

      • I think they brought it in:
"However, consistent with the Government's recent amendments to the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, the new standard will ensure that consumers using payment cards from designated systems (eftpos, the debit and credit systems of MasterCard and Visa, and the American Express companion card system) cannot be surcharged in excess of a merchant's cost of acceptance for that card system."

    Claratyne 60 tabs for $19.99
    http://www.cincottachemist.com.au/about_cincotta/catalogue-o…

There are five Cincotta Chemists listed on the Shop Small map.

At the Neutral Bay store the cashier was able to sell it for $20.

Yousave Chemist at Meadowbank also have the same deal but they can't change the selling price.

Did Newsfront Newsagency get taken off the SS map? They wanted a min. $40 top up aka walking on. I checked them up on the map again but they don't seem to be there anymore.

  • Sydney Circular Quay wharf 2 and wharf 5 have opal top up, bur charge $2 for each top up.

    • I don't see anything on the Shop Small map for those. Is there a name?

      • They are Ezymart in the wharfs before ferry gate. As you walk in, they are on your left.

Well well, final Shop Small weekend. Here are my final updates.

Convenience At the Cove in Lane Cove was very smooth. Guy of neutral friendliness but very willing to do the top ups.
    Surcharge: $0.60 (3%)
Merchant Name: CONVENIENCE AT THE COVE
    Email: Yes
    Paypass: Not for AMEX

Wu's Pharmacy on George Street is still good at $0.50. Fast, easy and friendly enough.
    Surcharge: $0.50
    Merchant Name: WU PHARMACY
    Email: Yes
    Paypass: Yes

City Convenience 419 Pitt St wanted a $2 surcharge and wouldn't budge for a $1 surchage. Walked.
    Surcharge: $2

City Convenience 379-383 Pitt St was easy enough. Guy of neutral friendliness.
    Surcharge: $1
Merchant name: CITY MART 24SEVEN PTY LTD
    Email: Yes
    Paypass: Yes

Mirna Convenience Store on 69 Liverpool St finally had their machine working tonight. Was a different guy though. Fairly friendly.
    Surcharge: $1
    Merchant Name: MERAM PTY LTD
    Email: Yes
    Paypass: Yes

Convenience Store 368 Sussex St accepted AMEX with no surcharge provided you bought something. I said sure, I'll buy a $2 Optus SIM with each card I use (two). Guy was quite friendly.
Surcharge: Technically $0 but wouldn't allow a top-up without buying something.. historically $1 so I'd stick to seeing it as $1
    Email: Yes
    Paypass: Not for AMEX

City Convenience 22 Market St walked due to surcharge. Tried to negotiate a $1 surcharge but he wouldn't budge.
    Surcharge: $2
The City Convenience opposite this one actually has a Shop Small logo and Opal top up logo.. but I couldn't find them on the official list. I was gonna do one to try, but was told their Opal top up machine was not working so I couldn't try.

Fastway 4/27 Park Street was nice and easy again, and once again manned by the super friendly smiley guy.
    Surcharge: $1
Merchant name: DARLING HARBOUR MIMI MART PTY
    Email: Yes
    Paypass: Yes

Grocery Zone 44 Park Street - Attendant initially said cash only for Opal card, unless you buy something $5+, so I walked. Then I decided to turn around and walk back and see if I could bargain for a $1 surcharge on each. He allowed me to do 8x with a $1 surcharge, but he rejected another person right before me (and I saw). Guy was friendly.
Surcharge: $1 (but really depends on who you get)
    Merchant name: GROCERY ZONE PARK
    Paypass: No
    Email: Yes

Also noticed a City Convenience with a bus stop right outside around 128 Castlereagh Street (approximate address according to Google Maps). They had both Opal top up flags, and a Shop small logo but I did not try as I was in a hurry to leave at the time. Doesn't seem like anyone has mentioned it yet either..

    • Mirna convenience store said cash only tonight for opal top ups. That's new!

      Millennium convenience was $1.

      • Did they? I was there 15 mins ago. Managed to do it with a $1 surcharge

        • Yeh the guy was nice enough though. No biggie, I just went with one of your other suggestions instead. My card is now maxed out at 242. I'm done!

        • @YadaYadaYada: I think he did it for me because he recognised me. It's my fourth time in the and my third time seeing him there. The first two times he said cash only as well. The second of those two times, with a funny look, I said "again? That's what you said last time". He gave a funny look back (the "I'm being cheeky" look). So I have a feeling he recalled the last two occasions and thought fine I'll do it this time.

  • Tried Newsline in Box Hill (inside Box Hill shops near the station), didn't accept Amex :(

  • Tried at Colonnades Newsagency. Guy didn't know what American Express was, then said cash only for Metrocard recharges.

  • 678 Korean Barbeque on Pitt St Sydney on thydzik's list but they do not accept AMEX and also not listed on AMEX's Shop Small Map.

    • thydzik's data was pulled from the september shop small event.

      • Cheers. Will remember to confirm before using next time

      • It was pulled from the November event around Oct 20 but Amex adds and removes things all the time.

    Final update

City Convenience 419 Pitt St initially said $2. Asked me how many cards. I said 2. Then he said, oh sorry, $1 if you have 4+ cards. I was like, hang on I do have 4+.. I have 7 and I was then allowed to make the top ups with a $1 surcharge. Assistant of neutral friendliness willing to help.
    Surcharge: $1 for 4+ cards, otherwise $2
    Merchant name: T & N SONS
    Email: Yes
    Paypass: Yes

City Convenience 379-383 Pitt St was smooth and fine again. Assistant was of neutral friendliness willing to help.

    Merchant name: MERAM PTY LTD

Convenience Store 368 Sussex St claimed their machine wasn't working. Have a feeling he was lying.. the following fields have been filled in based on past experiences.
    Surcharge: $1
    Merchant name: GROCERY ZONE SUSSEX
    Email: Yes
    Paypass: Not for AMEX

Hopefully this helps a person or two tomorrow.

Oh, also on the name and shame list:
Ezymart Rawson Place (near Central station) still wants to charge $1.50, mofos.
Ezymart on the corner of George St, closest to Petaling St & KFC Haymarket wanted to charge three dollars. I walked out disgusted.

    • +2

Mirna just asked for $1.50. I walked out.

Edit: Went back to negotiate. But he didnt recognise me and asked for $1 :). My first walking out seemed to work :)

  • Come next year, we should create a separate list of those store who treat people like customer. Any store trying to charge 10% surcharge should be avoided by everyone to teach them lesson.

The below stores are best in the business of Opal top-up in my experience (Sydney CBD).

Connaught newsagency, 187 liverpool street - 50c Surcharge
King of the pack, 61 oxford street - 20c Surcharge
WU's pharmacy in Sydney CBD - 50c Surcharge

BTW, is it just me who thinks that retailers charging more than $1 are also rude and arrogant? But on the other hand retailers charging less than $1 are very polite. Not sure if its just a perception or reality.

    • Oxford st newsagency and Darling park newsagency are pretty good as well, both with 50c surcharge.

    • Hit and miss from my experience. Really depends on who you get.

I've had that really nice guy at Fastway Convenience Store on Park Road - he was by far the nicest of the lot.

The others at all the other City Convenience stores I found generally ok. The fact that they want to charge a $2 surcharge isn't them being rude. They're just employees. The only rude-ish one I can recall (and even then rude would be stretching it) was a guy at City Convenience 379-383 Pitt St. He wasn't exactly rude - just not someone who smiles and wasn't particularly welcoming.. but I wouldn't say rude.

    • I haven't had a single good experience with any EzyMart store - such a bunch of a**holes. $2 per transaction to be treated like shit - really keen to help with the "Opal list" so that I don't need to have the displeasure of deal with them again next year.

    • -1

I feel the ones charging under a $1 are just not aware of the charges they face

The rude ones seem to be more aware or unsure about it

I won't be going to the under $1 next time, makes me feel uncomfortable since they're losing out on this

  • In Melbourne CBD today, any suggestions for lunch with shop small promo?

    • cafe kinetic or tazio both on flinders lane

Opal top-up in North Ryde in Sydney (The Village on Julius Ave) RIVERSIDE NEWS PLUS MORE

3% surcharge for Amex so on my $20 top up, I paid $20.60

  • I'm done for the month - 7 Amex cards, 10 transactions each - most of them opal recharge.

    Last ones for the day:

MLC Newsagency - Martin Place, Sydney - $1 surcharge
Quay Newsagency - Circular Quay, Sydney - 60 cents surcharge
Brand Depot Gifts - The Corso, Manly - 50 cents surcharge
Safeway Convenience - South Steyne, Manly - 50 cents surcharge

Did get the confirmation e-mail immediately for all of them.

    • Oh Quay Newsagency are part of it? I think you're the first person to mention them! I don't recall seeing them on the list this year (didn't look hard though) and I don't think I've seen them mentioned at all.

    • Were these all Opal recharges?

  • Did a round of Opal charges today.

No emails from these 2 places -

City Convenience - 3/22 Market St
Millennium Convenience - 120/295 Sussex St

Can anyone confirm if they've received credit back from these places?

    • i have got it for Millennium Convenience -289 sussex st
