Might want to include the dates i.e. which month.

With the Sydney flights, you'll want to look for SYD - HND (Haneda Airport) rather than NRT (Narita) if you want to avoid a connection. All QF SYD - Tokyo services go through HND now.

CBR > MEL > NRT is going for only about $20 more than the Melbourne flights ($743). Good value.

Also since Singapore Air are starting their CBR service on Wednesday, Qantas have removed their "Canberra tax" with flights now less the $600 return

Well, you guys got those awesome roundabouts, you gotta pay for that

      • I think you'll find everyone else is paying for all those roundabouts in Canberra. Not the locals

    • Also good but some people prefer to spend more moneys and get Qantas

      • +3

and not pay $160 for 20kgs of luggage :(

        • OOL - NAR return is $60 for 20kgs. (what I paid)

I'm assuming the $160 figure is if you haven't pre-booked and need that amount of luggage allowance at the airport.

          @altomic:
booked some flights MEL-NRT yesterday for a boy's trip, via Cairns on the way out and OOL on the way back. looked at the luggage options this morning and it's $83/20kg on the way out, and $85/20kg on the way home.

will be cheaper for me to buy toiletries (and probably a few days worth of clothes) in Tokyo and bin them before i come home :\

        • @jaybo: yes, if you book luggage at the time you book your ticket then it's less expensive. buying luggage allowance afterwards is more expensive.

hence why I paid $60 for 20kgs for the whole trip.

          @altomic:
yeah i booked my wife & her mum on flights direct MEL-NRT a while back and i think i just added the "max bundle" or whatever it was, something like $80 for luggage, seat selection + meal

i get it's the way jetstar do their business model, just reminded me a bit of why i hate them so much :D

        • @jaybo: I agree it's a rip off. I was flying back from cairns a few years ago with the kids. we had one suitcase. I had paid for a luggage amount of 20kgs. with some souvenirs (and 3 kgs of shells) we had 23kgs. the check in person was like "that'll be $72 for extra baggage." I just whacked the heavy stuff in a shopping bag and one of the kids carried it. FFS.

i used Jetstar for hawaii in march, japan in June, melb a couple of times this year and they have never weighed my hand luggage.

I had 12 laptops in my carry on luggage coming back from Melb in June. not a problem. Had 18kgs of manga comics coming back from Japan in my hand luggage - no problem. just saying.

        • @altomic:
haha yep, best one i ever did was 14kgs of batteries in carry-on many years ago! :D

we have 4 people going on this trip (meeting a 5th in tokyo) - it'd be cheaper for us to buy an extra ticket on the same flight than for all of us to take luggage. wonder if i can get a person-shaped bag for carry-on? :D

        • @altomic: I booked with the current Jetstar sale from BNE to NRT via Cairns and it was $56 each way for 20kg pre-booked baggage. That's an extra $112. I paid about $96 for 15kg. I couldn't fly from OOL as I want to go to the snow and the sale travel period from OOL was not for March.

Do your math, with the added cost for luggage and meal, it í cheaper to fly Qantas and get frequent flyer points

      • +3

        ok, I'll do the math.

so I paid $349 for a return ticket with Jetstar. plus $60 luggage (for 1 piece - it's myself and 3 kids). I take my food on the plane. there are 4 of us going and the return tickets for all of us in June next year came to a total of $1347.

so if I booked 2 people Bris-Nar return with this Qantas deal then it would come to $1500. so for 4 people would be $3000.

so, maybe some one could check this for me, but I think $1347 for 4 return tickets with Jetstar is cheaper then $3000 for 4 return tickets with Qantas.

        • The QFF points might be worth paying an extra $1650 to some people. But I don't think that's very OzBargain-like.

I was dissapointed jetstar offer was not suitable for my plan
Found this through searching and webjet came up more expensive.
Booked through flightcentre .they reduced it by a dollar per ticket however charged only 1% for visa payment
    Bestjet charges 1.9%
Got it for easter holidays week
Flights are direct from Melbourne and return .However MEL TO TOKYO is day flight 10 hours and 25 minutes
    Tokyo to MEL is overnight
Now have to look for cheap accomodation and rail passes
    Any suggestions? Thank you

Great find! I was about to pull the plug on the Jetstar one but managed to snag a great deal for April 14 - April 25 for $808 with STATRAVEL thanks to you with Qantas.

Perfect time for hanami/cherry blossoms (a little late for Tokyo but I will be heading north).

    Thanks OP.

    Hey guys,

I am about to book with fly365 - Qantas

I am not 100% set on the dates, do you know if there are fees if I change the dates after I pay ?

    Cheers

    Hey guys,

    Some advice.

    1. If you're under 31, book through STA Travel, airfare will be from $698 (depending on dates) I'm flying 13th to the 27th of may. Just search under 26, however the fare conditions actualyl say under 31. It also says for this fare you need an ISSC card, this is a nonsense gimmick from STA, and they don't ask for it at all.

    2. Select Visa/Credit card Debit even if using credit card. There will be no credit card fee and they don't check if you used a credit card or not.

Pretty good price, $698 return with no CC Fee.

    Cheers,

Edit - Also thanks OP for finding the deal.

  • Thanks OP, booked flights for Feb'17. The dates we wanted were a bit more expensive but under $1k on Qantas to Tokyo is a steal!
