Wouldn't the 1060 3GB be a bit better over this? Around the same price too.

I wonder who negged your comment, this is just a question posted by our fellow Ozbargainer.

I have the same question too.

This might give us some idea:

There is quite a difference between 1060 3GB and 6GB in speed as well as memory. Still, the 1060 3GB is slightly faster than the 470. The 470 only pulls ahead in AMD games and when over 3GB is needed. Even at only FHD, some modern games are using over 3GB now with huge texture packs. So it comes down to how long you think you would use the card. Also, you cannot SLI the 1060 3GB, but you would be able to crossfire the 470 down the track.

      • I wonder if the 1GB would really make much difference in the long term. Rise of the Tomb Raider uses something like 6.5GB VRAM at very high textures but is drastically lower at high textures. I mean that's only one example but it just goes to show how VRAM hungry some of these games are at the highest textures.

      • Would you only be able to crossfire the 470s if the games supported it?

        • I would say about 90% of new games support it.

        • @StuBalls:

Rainbow 6 siege didn't at launch and I had to get it refunded because it would only detect one of my GPUs. 90% is really not good enough IMO.

  • My head is spinning from all the different cards of the current generation. Is there a guide that shows best bang for buck?

  • I wonder if this card is worth buying. On Newegg and Amazon, RX 480 (4GB) are priced at $229 onwards. The official RRP of the RX 480 4GB though, is supposed to be $200.

However due to a lack of stock, sellers are enjoying the price vs demand curve and so consumers are paying a couple of dollars more because they have so little choice.

Guru 3d and Toms HW are both saying that the $199 price of the premium 470's cuts a little to close to that of a basic RX 480 4GB card.

    • I completely agree. I am waiting for the 480 4GB to come down slightly. I think I will get one at 199 USD when the demand decreases.

    • $229 ?? umm cheapest on amazon is $249 for a 4GB rx480… the $199 4GB rx480 is a unicorn and it will be for a long time going forward.. there is allot of demand for a $199 rx480 4gb at $199.. the RX470 being 10% slower, using 20% less power and producing 20% less heat kinda makes it a worthwhile purchase

you will only be able to buy after market vender rx480 4GB cards moving forward as only AMD reference RX480 4GB cards were $199 and they dont make them anymore. They WILL NEVER be priced at $199… cheapest would probably be $250US

Get this or get a RX480 4GB for $250US.. that is going to be the only option now and next year

  • Just saying the XFX RX 480 8GB is a pretty decent price for the 8gb model. If you want the 2 year warranty that still only AU $370ish, though it shouldn't be that high still heaps better than buying locally.
