I am surprised that they even sell heaters up there.

the day that winter is here can be a chilly one.

      • It gets cold in a queenslander. Wooden walls dont do much in keeping the cold out or the warmth in. Unless there is a fire then it goes up like tinder.

Traditionally, buildings are designed for the dominant weather conditions. You can easily warm up without heaters, but keeping cool in hot humid conditions is difficult (without modern aircon).

Old Queenslanders are designed with high ceilings, ventilation between rooms & under floors, and wide shaded verandas - to cope with the dominant weather condition here of hot humid summers, not the short period of cool in Winter.

However, this is not a good design for efficient heating - as you say. Just put warm clothes on solves a few days of cold weather. Insulation in the ceiling certainly helps year round.
I've lived in many 100+ year old Queenslanders & never used a heater since I was a child.

Even in the mountains in Japan, they usually design for the summer heat & humidity with wood & paper construction. Keeping warm in a mountain home with snow outside can be challenging. (Kerosene heaters & electric heater under a low table are common. But people mainly keep warm by wearing quilted robes.) Being able to open up the house to summer breezes when it's 40C is worth it.

However where extreme cold is the dominant issue, old homes in deep valleys have dark (small windows), small rooms & thick (ceiling) insulation to keep heat in. It doesn't take much to warm a small room - very efficient. Similar construction methods are found in old homes in the colder areas of Australia & elsewhere.

      • Like most places, away from the coast or up in the mountains it gets cold at night in Winter.

  • It pays for itself in 24hrs !

Correction, it doubles in price every 24hrs.
