So far the reviews that I have read are generally positive. The only negative I can see is that the CPU is running Amlogic S905X which is the budget S905 version which means it runs a bit slower but I guess it makes up with double RAM and ROM than most other TV boxes and still lets you play 4k videos @60Hz.

  • Interesting - I'm looking to move away from a fully fledged HTPC running windows 7 + Kodi.
Everything now sits on a NAS for me, so it feels like this kind of thing is the logical step from here.
Anyone who has gone through the change got any opinions/advice?

    • Hi. Have you considered plex?

      • I have a NAS running Plex, what would be a good solution as a box to connect to a TV in the bedroom for this?

        • Have you considered a Chromecast?

        • Or a Roku Stick, $60-ish from Amazon, comes with a remote, which is better then Chromecast IMHO

        • @Nalar:

I can't comment on Roku stick but I love my chromecasts V2

What makes the Roku better? I don't want to upgrade again, but just curious, I love the artwork that chromecast displays as screen saver

        • @Morty: I'd say the remote is the best feature, It's nice to not have to break out the phone to pause. Plus it's slightly more compatible with certain streaming sites (wwe, HBO) but less on Aussie ones since it's not officially in Aus yet.

      • I have - but I've heard there are issues with my particular NAS (Synology DS415+), running media server on it - then streaming 1080p + XboxOne PLEX. Ok for 720, but 1080p apparently has issues.

Yep, have done this. Basically sucks having to use a keyboard in the living room. Moved the HTPC (N40L) to be a file/Plex server and went with a Roku 3 for streaming. Such a nicer solution than a HTPC.

I went to a raspberry Pi 1->2 then an Odroid C2 . Cost for the SBC ( Single Board Computer ) was 1/10 in my case and I would still take the SBC over the HTPC anyday . I've never used one of these dedicated boxes but they can't be that bad and for the peanuts they are asking . I'm tempted to get a S912 box for the bedroom .
Only real problem I've had has been with some audio codecs but that is maybe 1 in 50 downloads . You probably wont get netflix etc on these chinese boxes either .

EDIT: I use yahtse android app on my phone as my remote . Works a treat and you can always just use the TV remote via HDMI-CEC .

      • You'll get Netflix, but it will be garbage resolution. Only certified devices can stream in 1080p+ and 5.1 sound.

I was going to go Android route, but ended up going z8300 windows PC. 2GB ram 32gb storage. cost about $110. Windows boxes are generally more than the android.
One thing that put me off Android box (I might be wrong) was someone reviewing one of these android boxes said the frame rate doesn't adjust automatically, so depending on whether content is 24fps, or 23.976fps, there is a stutter every 40seconds or so. Also, reviewers have said the android OS doesn't lend well to a remote control, as it's made for a touch screen.

    • i use servio on my server box. works well with this sort of device (i have a a95x 1gig/8gig used for x265 stuff)

My 2 cents worth, well i went htpc to android now using a nuc with mpc-hc. biggest issue i have with these android boxes is the lack of support for dolby true hd and dts hd master. kodi still does not support hd sound (unless something has happened recently). Have even tried the alpha kodi 17. I still go back to my 5year old wd tv live, most reliable device i have had. Yes I know it does not support h265, but it does a great job with the 1080 and HD sounds.
My advice don't bother with a android box. If you are going the android route look up sbmc if its still around (an off shoot of xbmc/kodi) always found it better.
Maybe try ARCHOS worked great on android.

    • They can't even passthrough HD sound? That's pretty pathetic.

But to be honest, I've got an excellent amp and speakers and there is no discernible difference between DTS and HD-sound formats. Maybe the tiniest difference with stock Dolby Digital.

    • To me there is a significant difference IMO and a Nvidia Shield can pass through HD Audio on these outputs with the latest firmware.

  • Coupon expired already ??

  • Well this offer ended abruptly.

  • Have this device.
While the CPU appears pretty strong, storage is brutally slow. Moving from screen to screen is delayed and loading programs can take forever. Once loaded though, they tend to run well.

The X9 run much better all round, though most of the Kodi plugins wouldn't work even after re-installation.

I've yet to find the perfect Android device. Being why I stick to NUCs at the mo.

  • Same cpu as the Odroid hmm

  • I paid US$42 for mine: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2016-TX5-Pro-Quad-Core-Androi…
Surprisingly it shipped from Sydney and arrived within a few days.

  • good box, but not an outstanding price, I bought mine a couple of months back for about $45 AUD inc. delivery (from memory) from an ebay vendor.
