  • Is this blu-ray player region free?

    • NVM, it's region locked to B. Don't know if there's a code to unlock it..

Another glue and go Blu-ray player with Broadcom chipset. Looking at the manual, the firmware is pretty much the same as the AMTC and the one sold by Clive Peeters earlier. So, good chance of being region selectable…

      Try:
Eject the player tray, enter one of the following numbers:

973501 is Region Free DVD and playback of Region A Blu-rays
973502 is Region Free DVD and playback of Region B Blu-rays
973503 is Region Free DVD and playback of Region C Blu-rays

      Good deal… pity I bought a simliar one before…

    • BluRay is made so it can only be unlocked by physically adding/changing a chip. It's not like DVD players where you can get an unlock code. BluRay players can also function as region free DVD players, though, if the manufacturer allows it.

      • Wrong, you can change the regions with codes on certain blu ray players..

        To spodosaurus:

Other players with similiar firmware (e.g. Allure, AMTC) can be region selected by entering a code when the disc tray is opened. I've tested an Allure player using a region A disc (as well as some region B discs). I think Kogan players are also region selectable.

I've provided all the codes in my previous post.

Region locking for Blu-ray is done on the firmware level (or for PCs, on the software/player level).

For more information about Blu-ray, check out wikipedia.

        • Good to know, thanks! The description I read on a (usually) reputable site some time ago was incorrect (or at least incomplete).

  • isn't it Soniq, not Sonic?

Another cheap player made by Chinese companies using reference designs from the chip-maker.
Looks like another Broadcom one, like the Allure and Dick Smith. - similar menus.
This one is DivX certified, but no mention of MKV - have the DivX guys disabled it?

Also, has optical and coax s/pdif, but no analog surround output.

Personally, I would not recommend buying this brand.

got a few soniq products and i'm happy with them…!

      • You just broke the WHY CHAIN. HOW DARE YOU?!

Yeah, Soniq/generic products really don't have any issues, I have tried branded DVD/DIVX players against cheapo DVD/DIVX, and I don't see much of a difference. The cheapo brands are easier to physically break, especially the DVD trays, but if you treat it with care, you'll save yourself $50-100. Remember, a lot of costs for big companies are brand promotion and advertising, what you pay for is not always what you get.

But the picture doesn't look like a flimsy player though, maybe the blu-ray players have a better standard in build quality than DVD players. meh.

          Ditto to this.

A few years back (4ish) I bought a bunch of Soniq stuff for both myself, my parents and my grandparents. Compared to what you can get today they were insanely expensive, but at the time they were insanely cheap compared to established brands.

All… 8 of the products including three 42" plasmas have been great compared to other generic products I've had. 4 years and they don't even have those niggling little annoyance most cheapo brands do that you can work around.

        • To top it off, someone went and negged all our why's? Either antkey can't handle criticism or someone has no sense of humour.

          • -2

@tomsco: I couldn't care less, whoever negs just to annoy demonstrates how childish they really are.

@Cripto: i negd this comment. for teh lulz.

@Cripto: Oh, so its you that constantly negging me, have fun! ;)

  • Is this available in-store? If not maybe add the $15.31 postage to the title.

    • Available in store

  • Does it upscale regular DVDs?

    • Don't they all? The broadcom chip does a very good job of it too.
Why do TVs do such a bad job of upscaling SD inputs?
I suppose it is a lot easier to do while decompressing.

      • freddy, what TV do you have? I have a Pana Full HD and it does an excellent job of upscaling SD TV, in fact it's sometimes hard to pick the SD channel from the HD channel…

        • Ah, but upscaling from the built-in tuner is much easier.
How does it look with an external 576-line input from a DVD?
There would be no reason for wanting upscaling DVD players if all TVs did as good a job.

… hmmm … you have me thinking … testing …
Waddayouknow? It seems to be just the deinterlacing on my TV that is crap. An old Acer-badged 768-line LCD.
So long as I use component input on progressive from the old DVD player (576p), it is OK.
I'd try 1080i, but do not have a suitable source.
I never paid much attention to the DVD-in before, as I normally use an HTPC for DVDs.

S-video and composite still look awful, as does the built-in analog tuner.
But it seems that the fault is in the deinterlacing, and I was wrongly blaming it on the upscaling. Even material from progressive sources looks awful on any interlaced input.

So generally, why do people want upscaling DVD players?

  • Just grabbed one of these players, even managed to get myself a whole dollar off !!!, $95 bargain. Now hopefully this thing plays MKV's and is region changeable.

    • I went and had a look at these but was disappointed that the front panel display is so dim it's useless. I thought the first was faulty so checked another and it was the same. Even at this price I expect a feature to work correctly. It would have made more sense to not have any display rather than one that looks faulty.

alialoosh, is yours like this too?

      • +1

That is funny, as the Allure is blindingly bright.
You should be watching your BD movies in a dark or dimly-lit room.

  • How does this one compare to the Clive Peeters one if thats still available?

  • Has anyone confirmed is the region free codes work. thanks

  • Have had one for a few days. Had to take back the first one, had a whole series of random faults. The replacement is much better. Did have trouble with a 5 metre HDMI cable though, that had worked OK with other devices, although never at blu-ray 1080p resolution. Works fine with a 3m cable though. Some of the remote codes also operate various functions on my LG plasma TV, which is a nuisance. e.g. the volume control on the Soniq remote switches inputs on the TV, which is definitely NOT what you want! However, you really don't need to use the player to vary the volume, so not too much of a problem. At least one of the TV codes also operates a function on the player.

Tried the method above to see if I could make it play a region 2 DVD, but it didn't work, just said "invalid".

All in all reasonably pleased, plays both blu-rays and DVDs well. Was also able to play MP4 and Mpeg videos with no problems from a USB memory stick formatted at FAT32.

Will keep it unless some new problem appears.

    • So you're having trouble entering the above code on the replacement?

Can anyone else who owns one of these please try changing the region for BluRay and unlocking the regions for DVD?

I'm deciding between this Soniq or Kogan's new Slim BluRay.

I've got a lot of Region 1/2/3 DVDs and I want to buy the cheaper Region A BluRays.

  • Got mine. Very happy with it!
