  • The dashcam is probably ok for use in normal weather, but I fail to see how this is a bargain.

    • +1

Does this mean that instead of posting bargains here, we instead post advertisements and ask if they are bargains or good products? Pretty sure that kind of thing is better suited to the forums.

Someone who has been a member for 6 years and has not posted even one deal is in no position to complain about those that do…..

        • lolz. thx

        • -1

I'm not complaining about the poster, only what was posted. It's still not clear how this is supposed to be a bargain. Would you care to explain given that you have experience in such matters?

      • +1

I dont mind if this is moved to forum if considered not as a deal. But with bad reviews of the cheap ones I think its worth a try - then you can return if not suited to one

  • +5

Looks like a pretty generic design. Probably better buys for $50.

    A118C
    G1W-CB

    • +1

Don't buy this or the one from Reject Shop. Much better to buy the A118 or G1W as has capacitor for our Aussie heat and much better video quality. I have the A119 and absolutelyurlry love it.

      • +2

A119 is nearer to $100 though.

        • +1

Yes and its better at night than A118. The A118 will fit 98% of people needs.

    • +1

The only other one that seems to recommended regularly on ozbargain is the Xiaomi Yi dashcam

    • We've got 2 G1W-CB in cars, used one in NZ for 2 weeks, no issues after 2 years - both from Gearbest
How does A118C compare to G1W-CB?

am thinking of jumping on it. Thoughts?

I'm thinking you will probably break it and void your warranty

    • Just return it, tell them your not satisfied.

      • +2

Or sell it on Ebay as slightly used.

        • +1

          "untested. as is"

      • .. as a trampoline? ;-)

  • Looked the same as reject shops $35 one was my sisters coment.

I'm thinking you forgot the "I" at the start of that sentence.

Car Video Recorder $50 @ ALDI

    VHS or Beta ?

    • +2

      Neither. Reel to reel.

      • +1

I like to move it, move it!

  • +1

I had a similar one I bought on eBay although it's probably a different manufacturer and model but it didn't last long as the battery overheated and swelled up in the summer and melted the case. I can't verify this one will do the same thing but one thing I can say is this design of windscreen attachment means the camera hangs down quite a long way which I didn't like. You could always try it and take it back if you don't like it.

    • +1

This is why you get one with supercaps instead of lithium batteries which can't survive Australian summers.

am thinking of jumping on it. Thoughts?

    It will void the warranty

There was a Negative Reality Inversion..

    • There's a strange echo in here.

Don't post in the toilet then…

        • Ozbargain is the toilet? Sorry English no goot.

  • +3

I bought one over a year ago on eBay which looks the same - rubbish.
For starters, it's too bulky so it looks stupid attaching it to your windscreen.
Also, the recording quality was crap.
Wait for the G1W to go on sale again.

if it hasn't got TRUE 1080p and No Parking mode then forget about it.

Other things to look out for are….

    • the plug in charger cuts out when your Car Battery gets to a low voltage level (believe me, from past experience, if you leave it on in a parked car for 3 or more days, you're Car Battery will suffer to the possible point you'll have trouble starting your car).

    • the DashCam unit must have a battery in it to take over for hours when and if the charger determines you Car's Battery has reached a low level.

    • the ability to choose GPS (mainly for Speedo imprint on the video), is at first a good idea to have, but be warned there are a lot of environmental factors that lag the information to your DashCam.
(imagine driving in a 80kph zone, then you hit a area where there is a series of 4 or 5 tall buildings on the right and high trees on the left, at this location the speed zone goes down to 60kph and you comply,

the DashCam will have longer than normal lag time in obtaining the speed, then someone cuts you off or slams on brakes infront of you, what happens then?

you think sweet! I have footage!

Cops will see your indicated speed to be slightly less than 80kph, then tables are turned, you are at fault (but you were doing 60kph! the dam DashCam did not update because of the obstructions/change in environment!)

save your money a buy a quality unit. (and switch off GPS or if the unit has a seperate GPS plug in module - Don't plug it in!, the DashCam maker has not and will never certify the GPS speed to be a true indication of speed, you will have to hire a smart lawyer if your matter goes to Court to discount the actual GPS speed reading). no worth it, just make sure the DashCam has true 1080P, essential for night and bad weather.

    • +2

Exactly what I was going to say.

      • word by word? well, that's odd! :)

    • Which dashcam have battery that can last hours?

    • +1

If a dash cam is running your car battery flat in 3 days in standby mode, time to look at your car battery, not the dashcam or charger. Most car lighter sockets turn off when the ignition is off anyway. If it doesn't, or you hardwire the cam in, see first line of comment.

Parking mode is useless unless you park your car backed in every single time or buy 2 dash cams, one front and rear. You nose in park and get shunted in the rear or the side, nice footage of a wall or the car parked opposite you.

I use battery powered Yi cams in both my cars. There is no way these last for hours on battery power. There is no way that any of these would last for hours on battery charge alone. They would have to be double the size to fit a big enough battery

GPS data from dash cams is not generally admissible as evidence basically for your above reason. There is no way a cop would see the GPS data unless you show it to them. If they asked to see it, tell them to get a warrant. Even if they do get a warrant to search your car and view your dashcam footage, they could not take the to court and it would take a work experience kid to get you off that ticket anyway due to the speed device not being calibrated and certified for speed measurements. I generally don't buy dash cams with GPS in them because the extra info is of no legal use and the extra costs is not worth it.

      • I bought a GPS attachment for mine. Got fed up keep adjusting the date and time on a rarely used car. Capacitor dash cam.A119

        • +3

The same reason I went from capacitor to battery type. My cars don't spend much time in the sun or get too hot and every time I went to drive either of them, the capacitor had lost its charge. Spend first 5 mins doing dash cam set up before driving…

        • @pegaxs:
My car lives outside. We don't have a garage. By all accounts a battery type would fail quickly on our heat

    • +1

or slams on brakes infront of you, what happens then?

It records that you weren't driving with due care and attention….

    • Awesome post, thanks for that JimmyBargain.

Do you have any recommendations for dashcams that fit that description? Preferably something quite subtle with a front/rear setup and up to $300 is okay! Cheers

  • +1

bought one similar look video cam from dino direct at cheaper price. daytime is ok. can't see anything at low night other than head or brake lights.

    • +1

try adjusting the exposure to -0.7

  • +2

i doubt these are the genuine DVR-027/207/207GS being sold by estore009 on ebay. i bought a clone for $20 once and it was crap fake. genuine one runs for about $80. but aldi has a good returns policy so worth a try.

have four of these (front and back cams for my 2 cars). bought nokia bl-5c batteries and i can run it while parked for about 3 hours. first cam was bought in 2013 and is still running after all these Perth summers :)

    • how to fit/connect the bi-5c to the cam?

the suckers don't suck after 6-12 months, yours are still sucking after 3 years. or do you use something else to adhere to the windscreen? thanks.

      • this cam comes with a replaceable/removable li-ion battery. open the battery compartment, remove old battery, insert new battery.

my original windscreen mount lasted about 1 year. then noticed horrid rattling in my footage so looked at the mount. it usually breaks where the plastic meets the sucker. superglued it back and it lasted several more months before i had to replace it. estore009 sells replacements

    • How did you connect the battery??

      • you don't connect it. you just remove and insert a new one.

  • +1

The video quality on these is terrible. Avoid like the plague.

    Example clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yX2IOVpgMk&list=PLNa2zxO0Hm…

  • +2

Reviews indicate night performance is abominable (like most k-027 clones) so a g-1w would be a much better investment for the money

  • Can't find this anywhere on the ALDI website.
