I can confirm that I recently had the Explorer card credit points to my Ascent premium (Platinum Charge card). I called Amex this Monday to unlink the accounts so my Explorer card is then crediting straight to Gateway account. Spent $1500 straight away because I knew I only had 4 more days till my 2 months was up to get the 100K Gateway points bonus. Glad to say this morning I have 100K in my Gateway account. This was the whole of the last 2 months contemplating if it was worth risking unlinking. In my case - it was.

    • Hi Ignite, Thanks for sharing :D This gives me high hopes (I unlinked my accounts too). I have $100 left to spend so should find out next week! You can fly to Europe on Business Singapore airlines now! That's what I'm planning to do!

    • How could you tell which system you were on?

  • I heard the referral link can now be generated. I am not sure what bonus is for signing up with referral link as I dont have the card yet.
    Can anyone confirm?

  • Yes, just appears to have gone live - sign up with a referral link nets you 110,000 MR points (and 20,000 for the referrer). Explorer added to the bottom of the referral wiki: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals

I have asked to have the wiki link added to the post.

      Good find champagne!

Happy they finally put out a referral link for this card :)

  • Can the travel credit be sold on the classifieds like complimentary flights from the Amex platinum edge?

    • The travel credit itself is non-transferable (only accessible from within your account or by calling up AMEX to redeem), but nothing to stop you from purchasing travel on behalf of others if it can be found within the AMEX travel portal.

      • Do flights or hotels have to be booked in the cardholder's name?

      • Anyone tried selling the $400 credit?

  • I currently have an AMEX QF Dicovery card, which I have held since last year. Did anyone with a similar situation get the sign up bonus? With the application did you guys give your drivers licence number and did you tick the box that says you had/still hold another Amex card? Cheers

    • Based on feedback from existing / recent AMEX issued card holders in this and other forums, you are likely to be receive the bonus as an existing cardholder. However, as always, YMMV.

It also doesn't appear to matter whether or not you tick the AMEX card box and provide your license number - AMEX has sophisticated matching systems and will easily identify you as an existing cardholder whatever you do. I ticked the box and was still awarded the bonus points.

      • Thanks your advice, so I applied this morning and got approved straight away. Now just a matter of receiving and using the card and see if the points show up. What do the other mean by linking/unlinking the cards? Do I need to do anything with my current card?

        • +1

The 'linking' issue seems too happen when people who already have an existing AMEX MR Ascent account with another card (a Platinum Edge or Platinum Charge card) find that their Explorer card is linked to the Ascent program instead of the separate Gateway program, and are unable to get the bonus points. This seems to be fixed by calling up AMEX and requesting that the Explorer card be set up under the correct Gateway scheme, then re-spending the $1500 and having the bonus points post.

As you only have a Discovery card (which posts points direct to Qantas) this scenario hopefuully shouldn't be an issue for you.

        • @The Champagne Mile: Thanks for your reply, apologies I was away on the weekend and could not check ozbargain. I will update when I get the points or not, either way.

        • @The Champagne Mile: points have turned up in my account! So shall I transfer them to SQ right away? Has AMEX taken the points back from anyone if they find out that you were a member?

        • @Cqx1223: Congrats on receiving the points.

I'm not aware of any existing AMEX cardholders having had the bonus points confiscated, certainly that hasn't been an issue for me. So whether you transfer them now or later is up to you - would just suggest that you only do so when you have a specific use in mind (rather than just transferring speculatively).

        • @Cqx1223: Btw, do you know how you can tell which program you're on?

        • @ronnknee:

If you have the AmEx app, it shows the program and the point balance on the summary page.

The app is very convenient if you don't already have it.

        • +1

          @Hogg:

Ah okay. I found out that you could also click on your Points Balance on your accounts page and it would also tell you the rewards program.

          Thanks!

  • Hi Guys,
I have applied this card and noticed being allocated to gate way rewards system. I thought gate way points convert to air points (aisa miles & krisflyer etc)is 1:0.75, but when login amex I noticed the ratio is actually 1:1.
Is this the case to other one else??? Thanks.

    • I think when u try to use the points, it will revert back to the ratio. If it doesn't, bonus!

  • +1

    they all say 1-1 :)

and then you log in and it changes :(

4 Membership Rewards points = 3 Asia Miles

  • Anyone know if the referrer actually get bonus points / other benefits by referring this card?

    • +1

I've made three referrals (brother and his wife, Mrs tizey) and all three lots of 20,000 bonus points came through to me as the referrer. 3rd referral bonus did take over a week from approval to come through, other two were credited in 2 days.

Mrs tizey already has her 110,000 bonus points (despite holding velocity plat Amex). Bro and his wife will be when they reach spend - no previous amex.

      • Do you need to hold an Explorer card yourself to be able to refer Explorer?

        • Unsure sorry - I've only ever referred the card I've held.

        • +1

You need to hold a card within the same points program to be able to refer someone to that stable of cards - so those with a Qantas AMEX Premium should also be able to refer to other cards (e.g. Qantas Ultimate) which collect Qantas points, and people with the Platinum Edge can also refer Platinum Charge (as both use MR Ascent scheme). So for the Explorer card, you should also be able to refer someone to it if you hold the 'Essential' card (this is the other card on the 'gateway' program) and vice versa.

Just look down at the bottom left of the screen on your AMEX referral link, and it should show up any other cards you can refer people to.

Having said this, I've never received any referral points for referring a related card, so unsure as to how well this works in practice!

  • I asked earlier in thread but I think it got buried. Just wanted clarification on points and using them for gift cards. At the moment with Plat Edge it costs 13,500 points for a $100 gift card. Would it also cost 13,500 on explorer card? Thanks

  • Approved for the card. Now to wait patiently by the mailbox.

Thanks Champagne Mile for making us all aware of the deal.

    • How long did it take to come through?

      • The case came super quick. I can't recall exactly but it was 5 business days max. My memory is saying 4 days.

  • I held an AMEX Velocity, and cancelled it a few months ago.
I wouldn't be allowed this deal?

Can the credit be used to book international flights? Points always sound appealing, but I have 300k and never use them lol.

    • If that's the only wmex you held, you would be pretty safe to get the bonus points. I recently (two weeks ago) referred Mrs tizey who still holds amex velocity, and she got the 110k bonus points on the explorer. From all reports, as long as you don't already have a Membership Rewards Gateway account (eg. From another amex card), then you'll get the points. Velocity platinum has a velocity earning account, so you'd be safe in that regard.

Credit can be used to book international flights - you just have to book it with amex travel. I used none for international flights within Europe (Switzerland to Italy) no issue.

      • Yeah, It's just a huge out-lay annual fee.

I travel overseas every year, but not so much interstate. I just got the ANZ card, so combined with this I'm going to have to find time for 2 interstate trips. I normally head to Bali, Europe or LA. Flights are cheap these days direct from Adelaide too, which makes it less valuable to have Amex credit.

        • Sorry - typo in my reply above. You can use the $400 credit for international flights no problem - i used mine for an International flight from Switzerland to Italy without problem (for me, Mrs Tizey & Inlaws), so can be for others and not just yourself.

With 300K in points + Explorer 110K, you'd be able to get pretty much anywhere internationally at the pointy end of the plane return. Who are the 300K with?

        • @tizey:

          Velocity.

I was going to start building up Qantas points, but havent seen many good deals regarding QFF points.

        • +1

          @lyork:

Can do a lot with that bank of points - 300k VFF turns into 222k KF Miles (Singapore Airlines), which with 75k KF Miles from the Explorer, is almost 2 returns trips to Europe flying business class + taxes.

Would be similar to/from LA with Velocity, or SFO with Singapore Air.

        • @tizey:

I have no idea how to use points and book flights.
I was planning to head to Europe next year, and I would love to go business class.

          I shot you a PM.

Actually, I currently have 300k. If ANZ gives me 60k that's 360k and if I sign up to the Explorer card that would be 450k or whatever.

          Lol.

          :D

  • I have a DJ amex card. Am I able to get the bonus points if i apply?

    • Hey mate

It's not 100%, but others have received the points.

Read through the comments above, you'll see some already have Amex issues cards and still got the bonus points.

      • A DJ Amex is not an Amex issued card. You will 100% get the bonus, once you have got the minimum spent.

        • +1

DJ Amex cards are issued directly by Amex

Credit provided by American Express Australia Limited (ABN 92 108 952 085). Australian Credit License No. 291313. ® Registered Trademark of American Express Company. Subject to American Express lending criteria.

        • @kev98: Thanks Kev98 for the pointer. I dont have the card but never assumed to check.

But like what Lyork said, some people have current Amex's and still get the points.

        • +2

          @starburstyellow:

Just a update: I applied last week, got the bonus points this week. so can confirm you still get the points even you have a DJ amex card.

        • @nlin1: thanks for letting me know. I too got the bonus points, having had the Qantas amex card already.

        • @nlin1: Did you tick the 'I have another American Express card' box?

        • @rogsamsy: I didn't

  • So an extra 10k points if you apply via a referral link. Why wouldn't you?

    • +1

Absolutely. But per the OzBargain referral guidelines, the deal has to stand on it's own / you can't advertise the referral offer as the main deal. Hence, the 'main' offer needs to be the 100,000 points, with the 110,000 bonus offer mentioned as an aside.

      • When does one receive the extra 10K points? Is it at the same time as the 100K welcome bonus?

  • can people offer their referral links here ? or any other place on the site like the ING codes ?

  • If I cancel my platinum edge, does that increase my chance of receiving the bonus points? I've noticed the 12 month rule has changed to 18 months, has this affected the chance of receiving bonus points for those with more than one amex card?

    • +1

Reports from those with the platinum edge is that they get the bonus points if a new Ascent Gateway Membership Rewards account is opened (which it should be for the explorer card).

What some users with platinum edge are reporting, is the explorer links to their platinum edge program, which is Ascent Membership Rewards. These users have reported that once they call amex to unlink the reward programs (which results in an Ascent Gateway Membership Rewards account being opened), they get the explorer bonus once min spend is reached.

So in short - yes, platinum edge users are getting the points :)

      • The reason I'm worried about keeping both cards is that I don't think what you said in your 2nd paragraph is necessarily true. An example is the user "Phuiie" in this thread. If you follow through his posts (on the previous page), he did exactly as you said, but did not end up getting the bonus points (as per one of his later posts). On the other hand, "elliebargain" did the same thing and ended up getting the bonus points. So it seems like a mixed bag.

Before I jump straight to applying, I just want to be reasonably sure that I'm going to actually get the points. So I'm thinking that maybe cancelling my platinum edge card might remove me from the Ascent program entirely (and therefore when I apply for the Explorer, there would be no Ascent program to link to, so it will go straight to the Gateway program). Does this sound right and do you know anyone who has done this?

        • Hrm, interesting. It seems a hit or miss with the plat edge a bit… I guess I'd read that it always works when unlinking from Ascent.

What your saying in theory should work - if you have no Ascent program, it should default and open you a Gateway program - I can't see why it wouldn't.

        • Hi brainactive

You might want to read through the Australian Frequent Flyer forum on the Explorer card as there are loads of testimonials from people all holding different combinations of cards reporting on what happened with bonus points: http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/current-…

But at the end of the day, unfortunately, there are never any guarantees with this and YMMV. Most of us have received the bonus points, but AMEX terms and conditions do state that you are ineligible to receive the bonus points if you're a current direct-issued card holder, or have cancelled in the past 18 months.

      • Ok just cancelled my Platinum Edge card (along with the Ascent program). When I login to my Amex app account, it says "card is cancelled", still shows a picture of the card and the Ascent points section is gone.

Before I go ahead and apply for the Explorer via referral, just wanted to ask whether it is necessary to create a new Amex account (with a new email) when applying, for those who have got the bonus points or whether they just stuck with their old account details.

        • I've always created a new login ID but used the same email address.

I dont think its necessary, but I feel this is safest that it doesnt get confused with any other program that is linked to that login ID.

        • I linked my Explorer to my Platinum Edge online account and didn't have any issues (then, once I cancelled the Edge, the 'ascent' programme disappeared from view in my MR online portal. But given that others with the same scenario have had some issues, agree with Tizey that it might be best to open a new online account.

  • +1

To whoever used my referral link in the wiki here.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals

Thank you so much! Always a nice surprise to log in to your account and see your bonus points!

  • Any ideas on what I can do to spend $1500?

At my current spending rate, I'm not going to make it the threshold.

The reason that I'm struglling is either the Platnium Edge is the better card to use (groceries, petrol), or the shop doesn't take Amex.

    • +1

Curious as to why you wouldn't temporarily spend on groceries / petrol with the Explorer to get you closer to the qualifying spend (surely 110,000 points is worth more than a month or two of an extra point per dollar with the Edge)? Otherwise, without knowing your individual circumstances, you could maybe pre-pay some bills, rates, private health insurance etc

EDIT: with bills, remember that you can link the Explorer to paypal and pay where Aus Post Billpay is on offer

      • Maybe I should actually do the math but my gut feeling is that altering my habits with grocery shopping would actually mean that I gain less value out of the bonus points. Losing out on potentially 100% or 33% more points feels like it's wrong.

My groceries are actually all done at Aldi who don't accept Amex. I should have written that in my original post. My groceries and petrol spend is still short. Downside of being an Ozbargainer I guess.

In retrospect, me falling short is more due to not spending very much normally, and shops don't accept Amex. My biggest spends seem to be on health-related goods or services. The doctors I go to and Chemist Warehouse don't accept Amex.

I think your pre-paying bills and the Aus Post Billpay will be my most realistic road to acheiving the bonus points.

Thank you so much for that tip!

    • +1

Hi mate, I grabbed $500 wish gift cards through cashrewards.com and $500 Coles/ myer cards through myers Amex offer. Both gave a 5%+ discount and Coles/ myer has an Amex statement credit. Lastly all purchases earn points themselves. Over Xmas / new years I'll spend it.

      • That's a really good idea. Especially with the Amex offers. I'm going to use it on the Westfield XS card and see if I need to spend more closer to the cut-off day. It will likely be some eWish cards.

PS loving the Amex. I love how I've gotten statement credits without altering my behavior. I get a nice email surprise after leaving he store.

  • Got my card early last week. Still haven't got my travel credit. How long usually?

    • I think its normally in your first statement - when the annual fee is charged.

  • Has anyone tried the offer with Essential card, or had Essential within past 18 months? Essential cards is also Gateway rewards program. Would be keen to know.

  • +2

    Hi all,
I too want to share my experience with my Explorer and having a Plat Edge at the same time.
When my explorer card came, it got linked into my Accent program on my Plat Edge. I didn't separate it until the last minute where my spending was about $1200. Called Amex and they unlinked it into it's own program without any problems.
Continued spending 300 + but still no bonus points - thought I missed the boat and didn't cancel the card yet.
Continued spending with the card, and maybe I went another $1500 after I unlinked the card, and voila! the bonus 100 000 points came in!
    I'm a happy camper now. :)

    • +1

THanks for sharing the helpful info in case anyone else is in the same situation. :)

  • Spent the $1500 and got the 110K bonus points the next day! Loving the Amex service.

  • +2

    Hi guys,
Also Plat Edge Card Holder, called the Amex when I activated the card to change the Explorer to Gateway Rewards. Just spent $1,500 and received the bonus points!

  • Has anyone used the Amextravel credit during the boxing day? Do they offer any boxing day sale- for example if qantas goes on sale on the boxing day, would it be reflected in the amextravel as well?
    Thanks for sharing your experience

    • +3

I bought Qantas fares from AMEX travel when they were cheaper due to a Qantas sale - and the cheaper prices were also available on AMEX (i.e. buying through AMEX was exact same price as Qantas website). Hope that helps.

  • Hi all,

What type of page did you see after completing the application online? was there any follow-up email or call after that?

    • +1

Never received a follow up call or email - usually just 'approved' at the end of the application, then radio silence until the card shows up.

  • Just activated my explorer card. However, when i log in to the app, i do not get a line for "Gateway MR" points. This is quite concerning - is this normal? Do I have to sign up separately for the Gateway program somewhere?

    • Shouldn't have to, no. Have you logged in on a computer? I find the app isn't always the clearest - on a full website browser (eg. Non-mobile), it should be clear.

      • Yep tried on computer, same thing. Called up Amex and they linked me to the gateway MR program, which now shows up on the app. Fingers crossed for the bonus points!

        • Nice. You should be good to go now with the bonus points!

  • Does anyone have the essential card and applied for the explorer and still got the bonus? Thinking of applying for this for the bonus but not sure if I should cancel my essential card as there is no guarantee I would get the bonus for the explorer

    • See comments above.

      • I have the essential card not the play edge though

  • If anyone applied for this and didn't get instant approval, how long was it before you heard back regarding the outcome? Were u required to complete any additional steps like getting your ID cited (like you are often required when you apply for other credit cards?). Also was contact by email, SMS or a phone call? Tia :)

    • My application was delayed as I needed to close down another card - but was completed quickly once I did so (then received SMS stating approved).

If you have an existing AMEX card it's unlikely that you'll need to provide proof of income. If you don't, you may be asked to provide proof of it, but AMEX don't usually ask you to provide ID (cards just get posted in mail).

If you are concerned at all, suggest you just give AMEX a call to check progress of your application.

      • Thanks for the response. They contacted me and all sorted now. Just gotta wait and hope more awesome credit offers come through when I get it!!! :)

    • Mate I replied to your other thread. My partner was contact via all 3 methods for ID check. I wasn't.

  • +1

For those who have unlinked from Ascent to Gateway, is it possible to link the card back to Ascent once the points have cleared for the better points conversion rate?

    • +1

Yes :) Just be prepared to play call centre roulette until you get someone willing to do it (it's a mixed bag).

      • Yes you can quite a few people in AFF have done it.

        • Trying to find the AFF thread - is there a risk of losing some of your points if they link you to Ascent? I'm scared of getting caught out although I've already used my bonus points to buy flights, I have another 20K points in there now that I don't want to lose. thanks for the advice. I will call after hours and try to ask an American. Thanks :D

        • +1

          @elliebargain:

Sorry the AFF is the Australian Frequent Flyer Forum which is separate from Ozbargain and they mainly deals will Frequent flyer miles. you should be able to find them in google but as far as I know when you change programs the points transfer over and yes it does depend on who you speak to as some CS are more knowledgeable than others.

        • @nightelves: Thank you! I've found the thread and I guess I can always ask the person I speak to at AMEX to double check. Cheers :)

    • +2

Based on past testimonials, the rule of thumb is, anyone with an American accent is much more likely to be able to do it for you. You increase your chances of getting someone with an American accent by calling after hours.

  • +3

Thank you so much to whoever used my referral link :D Really brightened my first day back at work to get that nice surprise this morning!
