Wouldn't the bladder eliminate the point of it being an oak barrel?

Barrels with bladder are for show only, they will not improve the taste of what you put in it. This is OK if you want something that looks a little bit fancy.

Cheap glued barrels will impart taste of glue into the barrel contents. Not recommended.

New oak barrels will put too much oak into the port/muscat/pedro x or whatever you put into it. Not recommended unless you want a lot of oak.

You want to get barrels for port/muscat/pedro x/tokay then get a small barrel that has been made from old pre-used barrels.

Get a 14 or 20 litre barrel. There are lots of other coopers in SA to choose from. This is one that I have purchased from before so can recommend the barrels.

Totally agree Argonbay. I purchase a new Oak barrel near twenty years ago and in my opinion it "over oaked" the port to a stage where it was not enjoyable. Not long after, i onsold it and since then have purchased three 20 litre Keg Factory barrels and have Rutherglen muscat, port and tokay aging beautifully.

    • The barrels are for different uses. If you buy good quality port you don't need to age again. If you buy other ports that may need ageing, please see the link below for our oak barrels. This comes in 3lt, 5lt and 10lt sizes.

Coopers make small barrels out of used big barrels. But wineries would have used the most out of it. Wineries will sell the barrels only when they can't get any flavour out of it. However new barrels give you the subtle flavours that are imparted to port as it ages in the barrel. Wine, as it rests in the new barrel, goes through subtle chemical changes, resulting in greater complexity and a softening of the harsh tannins and flavours.

A barrel essentially does two things: it allows a very slow introduction of oxygen into the wine; and it imparts the character of the wood into the wine. (This diminishes as a barrel gets older. You usually get 50% of the extract that a barrel has on the first use, 25% the second and less after that.)

So in conclusion I prefer to use new barrels compared to the used barrels. The used shaved barrels may give the same effect but it could take much longer than in a new barrel. Bladder lined barrels on the other hand are only for storage and not ageing. The bladder is not lined in oak barrels or any glue used.

    • For a similar price you can get a barrel without a bladder from: http://www.rolloutthebarrel.com.au/spirit_barrels.html

I picked up a 5L a few years back and am happy with it. I've been filling it with very cheap port and leaving it sit through summer to enjoy during winter. The port comes out darker and better tasting then what I put in.

      • I have checked that site. Similar oak barrels with no bladders are expensive and top of that we have to pay for shipping. In www.getgift.com.au the shipping is free all around Australia.
