  • Does it take 6 months to build
    Then 6 months to deleiver?

    Fail of a store.

Good power supplies are essential in any build. Also if you buy a decent enough brand, the manufacturer usually has fairly lengthy warranties on their top tier models — usually 5-10 years.

what do you get when you buy a cheap generic unit? a few things might occur

    1. you get power cables that are not made out of high purity copper, but rather an alloy of different materials. Typically done to cut cost, these cables end up not being as flexible and become rather brittle. This increases the electrical resistance of the cable making it run warmer than usual and you lose power efficiency as a result as some power is lost as heat.

    2. Missing connectors — if your power supply is so cheap that it only comes with 1 single 6 pin pcie connector and you wind up using some molex-> pcie adapters to power your video card, you're taking a pretty big gamble when it comes to power supply vs demand. Most of the time, you shouldn't even be using those double adapters which are very popular and are included with your graphics card, especially since all roads lead back to the same single 12V source in the end. A PSU shouldn’t be pushed to provide something that it doesn’t have.

    3. bad or poor quality capacitors that don't last. Good capacitors have low ESR (electrical series resistance) and we often find low-ESR capacitors on the motherboard itself. Secondly, a good capacitor ensures that the PSU is able to consistently provide high currents and guarantee that load fluctuations are compensated for. But not all capacitors are the same and the manufacturer might not even have stress tested the caps they are using prior to putting into mass production. Cheap electrolytic capacitors also have the tendency to bulge when small amounts of contaminated water come into contact with aluminium (a reaction creating AlHo3 and a gas) which can cause the capacitor to rupture.

My Antec TruePower 550 psu is now 5 years (so warranty has finished) and its still ticking. It has been used in three different builds so far (starting from a Core 2 Duo -> Sandy Bridge -> Skylake). Not expensive either — $130 dollars when new.

  • I'm reading a bit about PSUs here, I noticed on the eBay upgrade page for this listing the descriptions of PSU is bronze gold and platium with various w. does anyone know what is bronze unit vs gold unit at PC Btye?

They don't tell you the exact model you get. Very retarded. most likely whatever is profitable for them.

  • Just as a comparison, this is the deal I bought from. Shame that rep is no longer part of the company.

As you can see, clear communication, clearly saying what parts are involved

    Such a shame :/

Never buy from pc byte. They're terrible with customer service. They claim to have stock they dont actually have. You'll be left waiting for you item to be shipped for weeks and if you request a refund they'll take another week to process that too. Very shady business

    • While I certainly wouldn't recommend buying there pre-built PC's due to reasons that have been mentioned previously by others relating to the el-cheapo PSU and components.

I wouldn't say that they are a shady or otherwise bad business, as I have only ever had good experiences with them. I have bought a SPA112 ata, Netgear R7000 and several sd cards through them in the past. All have been deliverved within the week to regional NSW. I have never had to once wait more than a week for anything. While the level of communication is pretty much none it's pretty much the same for similar sellers such as wireless1 or futu just a single message to say your order is dispatched.

I would not recommend buying from this company. Their customer service is just incompetent and dishonest.

I bought a PC system from them 2 months ago with a 20% discount code. I wanted to make sure I was happy with the parts they were going to include in the build so I asked them to tell me which brands and models they were going to use. 1 day later they replied to me with the brands of each part. I had to ask them again for the models and had to wait another day for them to reply. I had a problem with the SSD they chose. I paid $129 for the SSD add-on and they decided to give me one worth $95. Felt ripped-off so I asked them to cancel the SSD add-on. They said they would arrange the refund.

At this point it had already been about 5 days since I made the purchase so I asked when they were going to deliver the PC. And then they tell me, and I quote, "Unfortunately, I have just checked again with our technicians and found out that your system has been shipped yesterday evening and I cannot cancel this upgrade for you anymore at this point. A tracking number will be updated later today. I am very sorry for the late notification". I was pretty mad, thinking had they replied to my messages quicker, I would have been able to get the SSD cancelled. But whatever, so I wait for them to update the tracking number. I wait and wait and wait, but nope, no update and no indication at all that it's been shipped. It was just so fishy. So I contact them again accusing them of lying to me, that they haven't actually shipped my order yet and to give me the refund for the SSD. They then tell me that they have, in fact, not shipped and will provide me with the SSD refund. Tired and outraged by their dishonesty, I demand for a cancellation of the entire order. Luckily, they didn't try any more stunts and gave me a full refund.

This whole correspondence lasted 9 days so I really suggest that you don't waste your time dealing with them. I'm glad I cancelled the order and went on to build a PC all on my own. If you have the time and energy, then I really recommend doing the building yourself - it's really satisfying when you complete your build! If not, then get a different company to do it. I would recommend Umart as a friend of mine had a really good experience with them.

Tl;dr - Pc.byte is a scumbag of a company who will waste your time and lie to you so they can avoid having to give you a refund. AVOID!

OK, since she's taking ages to put anything on here (not sure if she's pm-ing people), but I pm-ed francesca, 1 of the store reps, about the PSU debacle

(I don't care if this is out in public, all the better for it)

Hi, I'd really recommend you jump in this deal post and look after some of your previous, and hopefully future customers.

Questions over package deals that people bought with inferior PSU's supplied.

It's likely preventing you from more sales right now.

    Hi there,

    Thank you for informing us.

Unfortunately, we ran into an issue earlier with our supplier so that the power supply for PC system we are currently providing has misleading information about actual performance.

We will arrange to get another 550W power supply to make sure it meets the requirements for description.

    Regards,

Comment something in there to that effect, people aren't too happy

    So hopefully this gets resolved

That's really kind of Spackbace, on the whole I think the system is good value but hopefully they give a clearer description in the future, it's already a bit of a lucky dip as it is. All I'm hoping for is a 550W as described (which I will have to install myself) and sending back the old 220W PSU to PC Byte.

Just because I post a deal for them doesn't necessarily mean I back them as a company .

As I said earlier, had a good experience with them 2 years ago, looks like they've lost their way a bit with customer service.

Hopefully it all gets resolved and doesn't happen again :)

  • Can anyone recommend a decent Windows i5 with a SSD drive desktop? Looking to spend about $600-$700. My Windows desktop is 6-7 years old and is about to die and I don't have the skills to build one.
    Cheers!

    • +1

Perfectly able to put an SSD (of your preferred brand) in this one. Just use this as the starter system and add to it

Installing an SSD is easy done :)

      • OK! Will call them tomorrow. Cheers Spackbace! :)

  • It's just a shame that as a consumer we don't know which components we get in the end even if we go for upgrades. I asked what SSD is incl. with the 120gb ssd upgrade and was told kingston v300/400. Which one is it? I'm not gonna do it if its the 300. Such a shame pcbyte.

  • Here's a link to a photo I just took of my PC. Didn't realise about the dodgy PSU until now…

    http://i.imgur.com/HR7bc6A.jpg

    • :/ contact them tomorrow and hopefully they'll sort it like the others.

Need to organise a PSA post I think

  • In the final hours of this discount code, can anyone suggest a good motherboard/CPU/RAM set to replace my ageing PC's insides? (Details here)
From comments here it looks like MSY's everyday prices and service might be a better option.

Ordered on the 22nd and arrived today, albeit no one at home so needs to be redelivered on Thursday -_- They didn't even update tracking on eBay so I had no idea.
