If thousands of people buy these keys, there should be thousands of negative reviews after a certain period of time.

Just because a key isn't cancelled, does not make it legitimate and doesn't mean that it won't be cancelled in the future.

If you use a VPN in the UAE, you are a criminal. The fine is $725,000 or jailtime. Any criminal using VPN to watch Netflix or Skype (Yes, Skype is illegal to use in many countries because the government cannot listen in or control it), you should be jailed. (sarcastic).

So my dog eats my paper.

What does either comment have to do with this thread

        • @jv:

Has anyone here EVER had a Windows key Cancelled?
I've been dealing with windows since 3.1 came out and have never seen an install get cancelled?

        • @EightImmortals:

Has anyone here EVER had a Windows key Cancelled?

          Yep… Lots of people have.

Yes many times. I've seen what happens when IT companies sell non-genuine keys and when people repeatedly fail audits.

        • +4

@RockyRaccoon: I was trying to give examples of why some follow laws created by private billion dollar companies rather than use their commonsense. For example, in China, Windows licenses are sold dirt cheap, yet in Australia we are charged 10x that amount. If someone posts a cheap CD key, they are "assumed" guilty and branded as as fraudster at a time when companies like Microsoft make billions of dollars in annual profit whilst paying virtually NO income tax outside the USA, yet are charging citizens in OECD countries massive fees, while selling legit keys in China/3rd world countries for dirt cheap. Infact, they are GIVING Windows 10 to every person who has a pirated copy of Windows in China - http://www.techrepublic.com/article/microsoft-gives-up-on-ch…

So yes, whilst we are still paying $15-$300 for a legit copy of Windows, people who never paid are getting it for free. BUT BUT, if you don't buy it here in Australia for the full price, then you are a badie or someone who supports a underground criminal network.

        • If you use a VPN in the UAE, you are a criminal.

I think you should read that "news" article again because it relates to criminal activity using a VPN, not simply using a VPN.

  • People still buy Windows keys?

Go do a Uni course and get windows key from uni for free! lol

    • +5

The course needs to be IT related to qualify for DreamSpark access, I never got one when I studied Business at UWS. I did however when I studied IT.

      • Unsw Engo (all disciplines) has dreamspark access for anyone there :)

    • +7

So you want me to register for a course at university which will cost thousands of dollars so I can save on buying windows?

      • Ask someone who goes to uni to get you a copy. The legal way. LoL

    • I'm glad I got several Windows 7 license keys when I was in university. MSDNAA at Swinburne had separate keys for 32 and 64 bit, and two separate keys when SP1 came out. Four keys in total, and I've only ever used one of them. Recently used another one of them on a brand new build and got the free Windows 10 update. Still worked even though I got the key in 2010.

      • Well done! People should do this.

  • +4

Bunch of keyboard superheroes here tonight!

    • +1

Gawd damn bunch of kitten-killers if you ask me…

    • You don't think people should be warned that they might be using unlicensed software and the keys could be cancelled at any time? Seems like useful information for the buyer to know to me, especially when the seller is falsely claiming otherwise.

    • Nothing like a safe bet and a bandwagon.

  • Wasn't Windows 10 free to download and install for anyone who had a Windows OS on their machine for ages until recently? Why would anyone pay for it? I got the offer repeatedly and in the end stopped to even get the annoying notification for good through the Registry. Win 7 is doing fine for me, thanks.

    • well the free upgrade is now over (i'm assuming) so best price offers become deals to some…

    • +2

That's to upgrade from an existing copy of Windows 7 or 8.

i.e. if your machine has no Windows installed, and you don't have a Win7 or Win8 license key, you cannot score a free copy of Win 10.

    • No idea why everyone doesn't just go to your link & get 10 if they want it so badly?

I went ahead & jumped because I have a couple of 2GB max netbooks that were running 7 Starter. They upgrade to 10 Home, so a bit of a boost.

      Ta!

With the exception of Product Key Cards (PKC’s) distributed with COA’s, Microsoft does not distribute products keys as standalone products. If you see a listing on an auction site, online classified ad, or other online page advertising product keys for sale, it’s a good indication that the keys are likely stolen or counterfeit. If you were to purchase and use a stolen or counterfeit product key to activate Windows installed on your PC, the key may not work for activation, may already be in use on another PC, or it might be blocked from use later by Microsoft when the key is reported stolen. The best way to get everything you expect up front is to buy genuine Microsoft software preinstalled on a new PC or genuine Microsoft software from an authorized reseller.

Ok, that was pretty much a waste of time. Purchased key, got email with details within a few seconds. Using google translate from German got the following (key removed for privacy reasons):

      Hello,

The phone number will be displayed during installation.
If the installation has already been completed, please proceed as follows:
Simultaneously press the [Windows] and [R], so that the command "Run" will open.
Enter "SLUI 4" and confirm with "OK".
Call the following number (from Mobile XXXXXXXXXXX / or landline - XXXX XXXXXXX) to complete the activation. When asked how many versions you have already activated with the key, please provide only 1x times.
You will then receive an activation code.

Filled out all the information on the windows report page and got this:

Thank you for submitting your counterfeit report
We appreciate your effort to report the sale of counterfeit software and will look into this matter as quickly as we can.

So no answer. RIP science. RIP $AUD15.

      • You can ring the activation centre and they should be able to tell you the number of activations/type of key etc.

I don't have the exact phone number so the VL activation centre should help. 1800 642 008 and toll free if you're keen ;)

the keys i have purchased, were purchased as OEM keys, and were sold with new computers i built, i have no keys to report to microsoft that are my own, my own view is these are OEM keys, and that the prevalence of these keys in germany indicates germany has different digital laws, im saying this because i know ebay better than most, they would close down key selling in germany in a heartbeat if they could, but they havnt, there must be a legal mechanism preventing them from doing it in germany
perhaps you should purchase a key and see what happens, i would love to know the answer myself, i purchased many windows 7 keys to upgrade free to windows ten, but ive only bought a few windows 10 pro keys

    • I have bought a few Windows 10 Pro keys, but from other eBay stores, and have yet to have a problem.
But of course these are still within 1 year

    • Why would anyone listen to you? You already admitted above that you are the seller, when you said you were profiting from the sales.

    • In case you're not aware - further read https://www.microsoft.com/OEM/en/licensing/antipiracy/Pages/…

COA, recovery media, and security features
A certificate of authenticity (COA) is a label to help you and your customers identify genuine Microsoft Windows software. Without it, your customers will not have a legal license to run their Windows software.

You will find the COA included in the System Builder Pack that you acquired from your distributor. If it is not included, contact your distributor.
You must affix the COA to the case of the computer on which you are preinstalling Windows as described in the system builder license.
You may not distribute the computer without performing this step.

I don't know why everyone is having a cry and arguing they are not legitimate keys with no real proof. For all you know they very well could be legitimate. Ebay + paypal + 2600 99.8% positive feedback…. see where this is going?
For the record i buy ALL (i buy a few) my keys from reddit, G2A etc and I've never had a key revoked or a product deactivated.

    • It is not possible that they are legitimate. The product they are selling - standalone keys for retail customers - does not exist.

  • What happens when Windows is deactivated?
Can you still use all features, except you just have to keep acknowledging a message every time you startup, as is the case with a deactivated version of Office?

    • Think it shuts down every hour or so after a while. Can't recall exactly.

  • -7

    Please just post legitimate deals..

  • +1

    Thnx

  • -3

Commenting so I can neg this deal.

There is no way to distinguish this keys as being either OEM (as claimed) or MSDN/Volume keys. The price suggests that they are MSDN/Volume keys which are not valid for use outside of the MSDN/Volume program. The seller is making 100% margin, as this is a scam.

  • +4

Why bother with dodgy product keys? According to this Report you can download Win 10 legitimally and run it forever without a product key with minimal limitations. You even get updates.

    • Good to know. That's a great compromise by Microsoft.

    • Thanks for the heads up dude.

I've previously bought from a UK seller at around $45. It had genuine in the title and since I played with PayPal it was easy to get my money back if it wasn't. That was in January and ever wincëi haven't had a problem

    • -2

Just because you buy a key cheaply, that "works", doesn't mean you're paying for the correct license.

      • What does correct license entitle? I don't really understand

        • +1

It's basically what this whole thread is about. With software, you're essentially paying for a license. It's a bit easier to explain with something like Office. When you purchase Office, there are different options. You can purchase it for home use, education, or work. A license for home/educational use is cheaper than if you're using it for work or as part of a business (i.e. for profit). If you're not using the key as per the license, Microsoft could choose to deactivate it.

        • @TailsK:
ah okay, i'll read into it. Still not sure how it works. When you're installing windows on a new pc and you input a counterfeit code you buy from some 3rd party seller, it would still work?

        • @rickyygee:

Your code could be legit - I'm just talking in general. Yours was just the first comment I saw, and felt like replying to. Sorry if I worried you!

        • @TailsK:
Ah no worries man, i just didn't know the details of it and wanted to learn :)

  • +5

While these may have been bought by stolen Credit Cards, I suspect that's unlikely.
The possibility of buying similar keys on reddit has been going on for years (Windows, Office, Adobe) etc. The keys are acquired from Uni students in the US (or elsewhere) who get them on masse for free. The keys are legitimate but would be classified as a 'grey' area. They are not meant for resale but will work for you without issue. That is to say, they aren't made from some key generator but are legit keys from a Microsoft source.
Sometimes the sellers have been known to get into trouble for this, but not those who have bought the keys.
The worst any buyer has suffered is at one point Microsoft began disabling the Windows keys for Windows 7. I've bought about a dozen keys from reddit (won't link incase against Ozbargain rules) of Windows 7, 8, 10 (both Home and Pro editions) as well as Office 2010, 2013. I did lose one of the Windows 7 keys (was $20US) but all other keys have been fine and going for years.

I'm in no way saying this is right, anymore than I'd say Microsoft's full retail prices are right. But it's often not as dark or evil as many make out.
It's semi dark, semi evil :D Just as Microsoft likes it :D

    • We had an insight recently into one possible way these keys could be obtained. Got an email from Microsoft which appeared legit, but had a whiff to it. According to the email we were having our licenses spot audited. There was a spreadsheet requiring a lot of company details plus a sample of our license keys, both individual and volume, for confirmation. They would then get back to us within a specific time frame with any license remediation costs.

The net contains many comments on this process. From what we can tell, it actually is the process used by MS, however the sender's address didn't check out with MS, and the phone number on the email showed up on a reverse number search as a scammer. It's easy to see how someone could overlook these details.

So it seems to me that if they had got away with it, they'd have a bunch of our license keys, and would then send us a bill for "license remediation", and quite possibly would provide us with a set of valid license keys… scammed from someone else, who would receive our valid keys in return for their money.

Just my speculation on motive, however there are no shortage of reports online that MS actively pursues customers in exactly the same manner via its "partners".

100 Pluses to you OP, Thanks, a great deal and a great first post. Don't worry about all the cry our there. There is no proof that its a non legitimate deal. And its not the biggest or the last gray area we all at some stage of life ventured into. How about all those pricing errors we all so much want to jump on, where a small business compared to MS is loosing. Anyway, I have about 8 windows 10 GENUINE upgrades running, But I purchased this deal just for the hell of it for an old netbook and after getting my license , I called MS and said that I just puchased this key from ebay germany and also said that its said that it may not be legit, they asked no questions and just activated it.
    Regards.

    • +2

How about all those pricing errors we all so much want to jump on, where a small business compared to MS is loosing.

Exactly. The high and mighty posting here are usually the ones who get upset when they miss out on pricing errors. The moral compass needs adjusting.

    • I called MS and said that I just puchased this key from ebay germany and also said that its said that it may not be legit, they asked no questions and just activated it.

      What number did you call?

  • +5

Classic case of mob mentality here, the morality issues aside (which we've never cared about in the past…) at the end of the day it's a good deal for those who can't afford purchasing software directly from MS, still want a legitimate key and are willing to bear the (arguably small, considering ozieboy's comment above) risk of problems down the track…
Thanks OP, won't be buying today but great to know there's this option out there

    • +2

      well said goodguy.

    • +1

This is not a case of mob mentality at all, you do not know how legitimate the seller is.

The issue with these keys is that yes they will work initially, however depending on how many keys or copies of the same key the seller has sold and how long they keep their licensing agreement with Microsoft, these keys may not work down the track. Also if you are actually investigated for licensing issues, these definitely do not pass the legitimate test

You can purchase these keys for peanuts as well at other locations, after a few purchases you will find that there are some sellers that get their keys deactivated very often, and other sellers where they work for longer. This ability to change the time frame is to do with how vigilant microsoft is being at closing the accounts down, as well as how well the sellers are doing to hide their volume sales.

For example, if one seller only has a pool of 3 keys to sell and sells 1000 of them, then it's very obvious to microsoft, whereas another seller that has 1000 keys selling them 3 times each would fly under the radar easier.

Regardless of either approach, these keys are NOT legitimate, DO NOT FOOL YOURSELF. However if I were a mum/dad using these keys at home, i would have NO problems with using them. HOWEVER if you are SELLING systems with these keys, or using them in COMMERCIAL applications then I would think very carefully about the relevant fines/ramifications of using software obtained illegally.

The posts of concern are NOT mob mentality, they are genuinely concerned members that KNOW how licensing works, are pointing out the risks so that others can make an INFORMED decision. I have already pointed above previously that using these at home should be no problems, it's only when you are profiteering or using them in commercial applications then microsoft may come after you. Even then the risks are small

      • Fair enough, I had only considered personal uses where you'd bear the consequence of illegitimacy down the track… Commercial applications though are a different story

    • These are certainly not legitimate because retail keys are not a legitimate product.

  • +5

Needed a key, got a key. thanks for posting.

  • +3

As its the case with many other laws in this world, it's legal since about 2000 to sell OEM keys separately to a PC IN GERMANY.

The highest court ruled on a case there between Microsoft and distributors of OEM keys. However in Australia it's not legal.

Link in German here: http://m.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Microsoft-muss-im-OEM-S… and

    https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gebraucht-Software

    • Good information but these are much, much too cheap to be OEM keys. Almost certainly VL or MSDN keys which are not covered by that ruling.

    • thank you for this information ahara could you forward it to a mod, i suspected german digital laws were different as a few years back i was swamped with hundreds of EA game keys from germany and ever since ive been buying keys from there with no problem

    • As I understand it from reading the translation while it is not illegal it still breaches the Microsoft terms of use. It's just that - in Germany - Microsoft becomes powerless to enforce that part of its terms of use.

As far as Australia is concerned - I actually couldn't find anything that I viewed as authoritative that said it was (or was not) legal / illegal.

So it may in part depend on what the Ozbargain policy on deals that breach terms of use are. I couldn't immediately find anything that directly stated a policy on deals that breached terms of use / terms of service. Deals that have required VPN's have been allowed in the past so potentially a breach of terms of use may be permitted? One for the mods.

      • The ruling overruled Microsoft Germany terms that you cannot resell a license you no longer wish to use. However, you must uninstall all software associated with the license you are selling and it's not applying to VL, just OEM.

There have been other court cases since but that fundamental applies for any software in Germany still. It's allowing software acquired during insolvencies etc. to be unbundled and sold separately.

  • its a bargain…with risk. thanks for sharing this information odgaf

      • Different. How did you go with activation?

        • Haven't tried, it was for use later on. :)

  • As we all know, the grey key debate can go on forever and ever without any real conclusion. It could be stolen , OEM, Uni key or a developer key, no one knows. So as long the buyer recognises the risk of buying a grey key that he/she is willing to bear. But at $15, you could probably buy a couple in case of deactivation.

In addition, some people dont realise that your old broken laptop with Windows 7 can also provide you a legitimate key to be used for upgrading your new PC to Win 10. Just FYI.

  • +2

As already stated, these keys are a grey area. If you buy this cheap key for $15, it's your way at getting back at these multinational companies dodging billions in tax with their secret offshore tax havens using grey tax loopholes. +1 for the little guy.

Microsoft has $92.9 billion or better put, 92,000,000,000 located in offshore jurisdictions, in which they never paid a dime of tax on.
    http://www.ibtimes.com/microsoft-admits-keeping-92-billion-o…

    • I'd rather Microsoft keep the tax money and reinvest on more innovative products than for them to pay tax and support dole bludgers / inefficient government spending i.e. NBN, useless submarines etc….

If you read your tax return summary from last year, 1/3 of my tax money apparently went into welfare payments…

      • I agree with you 100%. But at the moment, the ultra rich corporations are not paying their fair share, whilst me and you are paying our fair share to prop up welfare spending. So, is that fair to you? Should we continue to pay their share of taxes and let them have a free pass so they can continue to innovate the world?

        • That is true. lol maybe the dole bludgers should be buying these keys haha

  • +1

How are you supposed to activate these by phone?

  • -2

How is this a deal? There are tonne of shoddy products on Ebay, why not list every one of those?

  • lol, why the sudden a old case become a hot topic? Peoples who bought this kind of key need to remember: It doesn't make your copy of Windows becomes legit, yes it works but at the end Microsoft will not accept it as legal copy, that means the user will still busted if audited. And if you are not buying this for legal reason, then why would you pay for something not much different with counterfeit product?

  • Who cares it's only $15 pretty good for a gamble on something that costs $100+

  • I think this is the crux of it.

1: Since Win 8.1 OEM is not permitted for personal use. Therefore a Win10 OEM System Builder license (by the terms of the license) can only be used for a computer which you are selling.

So purchasing for personal use is out.

2a: The system builder license requires that the COA be affixed to the case of the computer you are selling, link

You must affix the COA to the case of the computer on which you are preinstalling Windows as described in the system builder license.

2b: The seller does not provide a COA to attach to the case, product page link:

No delivery by mail only via e-mail.

So purchasing to install on a machine and then selling the machine is out.

tl;dr The purchased key cannot be meaningfully used AND simultaneously be 100% compliant to the terms of use / terms of service.

    Edit:

For clarity I am not saying that it would be legal / illegal. Just that it is not compliant with the terms of use. Is there an Ozbargain policy on deals that contravene terms of use? I couldn't find it if there is one. Also note this.

  • I explained in a previous post how to get a free replacement Windows key if you lost yours. This same method gets anyone free keys which then can be sold to anyone - certain this is not legal - , and whether it works on their hardware config is another question. Employ people in third world countries to redo this method thousands of times and profit.

So commonsense says that unless the ebayer is a certified MS re-seller then it is not legal.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/256048
    Adhoc on 08/07/2016 - 13:08

If you can't find your product key:

install win 7 or 8, home or pro (download form MS website, google how to create an install usb drive for windows).
Activate using a KMS service (google search), if unlucky you may get a virus but who cares as you will format later.
Immediately do free upgrade to win 10.
Use Belarc Advisor or similar to get your product key (write this down).
Immediately do clean/fresh install of win 10 (do a format - to clean any virus), activate with product key you wrote down.

A Windows install from usb drive is only about 10 minutes. Downloading Windows file size is approx 3.7gb and you will need both win7/8 AND win10. Your win7/8 version must match your win10 version (home or pro).

Source: Last week I upgraded win8.1 to win10, then 2 days later my OS SSD died so I had to redo. My original product key was tied to my UEFI motherboard and it did not want to work so I used the above as a work around.

    • All Windows 10 keys will be the same if you used the Free Upgrade Path to do it.

  • Well if these are legit keys ; you shouldn't worry about them being pulled as of now, all windows 10 keys should be activated against your Microsoft account and linked to that account.

    But this is definitely iffy.

    • Unless you set it up as a local account. :)

  • Anybody who bought one of these and it worked, what steps did you take to activate it? Thanks

  • Absolutely stupid to pay a dodgy seller $15 for a illegitimate Windows 10 key when you can get the exact same result for FREE using other means.

It's like paying a pirate $15 so you can download a pirated copy of a movie.

Yes they supply you a key. Yes you can probably eventually get that key to Activate (if you are lucky).

And you get a functional copy of Windows that is not "legal". If that is your objective then this is a negative $15 "non-bargain", because whatever you paid is exactly that much to much.
