Reviewed this unit and it's excellent but the price will probably scare most away.

    Great price though.

Not interested in buying one, as I have a Shield already, but the description states "23.976 / 29.976 AUTO FRAME RATE SWITCHING"

From your experience, did you see that it wasn't limited to 23.976 / 29.976? Does 25 for PAL media as well?

      • +1

Yeah, 25Hz worked fine as far as I can tell. They usually call out 23.976 / 29.976 as most Android boxes don't handle them well.

How is this compared with the Minix Box?

    • HiMedia are generally one of the best companies regarding media playback though the chip in this box isn't the best for gaming.

Also note that Netflix won't be HD - you'll need something like the Nvidia Shield or a WeTek Hub/Core.

      • How effective is the remote control. Can this FF 10mins per click-Up and 90secs FF click-right, etc..?

  • Hi,

Is there code for Q5 PRO?

  • Nvidia Shield is a much better choice overall with a similar price tag. Cheaper if you count the excellent remote.

    • Yes and no.

Shield is great. Shield is awesome. I love my Shield, and it loves me.

BUT. It doesn't now (and with how requests for it have gone pretty much ignored it looks like, ever) support MVC/frame-packed 3D.

If you need MVC/frame-packed 3D video support, then Shield is NOT your guy.

      See this thread: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=221407

Edit: And for many other things, Shield is a better option.

      • I bet the user base of that is super tiny and if that really bothers you there are plenty cheap Amlogic boxes that can do the job. I had a quick look at the Himedia's review and the UX is no where close to Shield. It feels like a glorified Chinese Android TV box. The Xiaomi Mi box is going to be Nvidia's real competitor. I am a hair away from negging this deal.

        • Doesn't matter how small the user base is. It is a deal breaker for some, which is why this is a good deal to post. What's the issue?

        • It's a good deal as this box is typically super-pricey (upwards of $300).

          It's just not for everyone.

        • @Morien: Issue as stated, get an $50 Amlogic box if you need MVC and are happy with a slightly modified generic interface.

        • @Darkscythe: yes the rrp is sky high but I am just judging from a feature/price point of view.

Review for people to look at.

Overall verdict: B+; at present state, with firmware version HMD-1.0.3 2016-05-23.124800
HiMedia Q10 Pro is shaping up to be among the cream-of-the-crop 4K boxes for local/NAS videos, with excellent 3D carried over from previous-gen! It mostly already delivers on full-range 4K, 3D ISO and HD audio A/V enthusiasts!

PQ = A- (HiSilicon's Imprex Engine 2.0 builds upon previous engine to provide excellent PQ, especially for 4K now. But, various Imprex settings don't appear to impact PQ, so HiMedia may have some work here)
AQ = A+ (All formats bitstream great!)
UX = B+ (User experience is similar as Android launcher similar to previous-gen, but bit more polished. Kodi relies on HiMediaWrapper for playback as before)
Ease of set-up = B+ (Fairly straightforward; with new HiMediaWrapper APK pre-installed (so need only apply only after first opening Kodi). Just do all the proper A/V settings, options. See photo gallery and video below). Mounting NFS and password-protected shares now made easier too
Build quality = A (Solid aluminum shell body, with full 3.5" HDD bay, and near-silent fan. Remote same as before, lacking 'Stop' button)
Manufacturer support = B+ (Better than most Chinese manufacturers; but not that WeTek-level gold standard. Solid forum support however via Futeko and of course here)
