    Shame there's no women's gear.

Agreed. Thinking of grabbing the helmet for my partner, she only has a very cheap open face THH and I think the closed face ALDI helmet might be better. Some other items may be unisex but shame to see they are not catering for the lady riders out there.

she only has a very cheap open face

Don't let her know you said that!

      • +1

just buy a proper helmet from a proper MC store? why would you risk cheaping out on a helmet

        • These helmets are all certified so the only thing you might lose out on is comfort (which you can try on before you but) and wind noise and ventilation. Unlikely to make a difference from a safety perspective

        • +1

@Jackson: yeah but its also about fit as well. each brand practically suits a different head shape. You dont want a helmet pulled over your face during a crash or slipping off or pressing against specific points on your skull

nothing wrong with the aldi helmets if they fit

Im really just talking about open face

  • I tried to get boots last year, store had about 1 pair of each size - wasting (just about) everyone's time I think!

    • You were lucky IMO. Waste of money for me as they wore out too quickly.

      • +1

        Where did they wear out?

        Edit, saw later comment. Thanks.

        • The zipper broke. The leather? also started to flake off.

  • How cool do people remain in this type of gear?

I've wanted a set in case the zombie apocalypse starts, but worried about overheating.

    • Didn't you see the movie? You're the first to get it in the neck :-)

      • Shit, I like my neck too.

    • When Zombies attack over heating might be the least of your issues. If you get too hot ride or run faster !

  • I keep the leather jacket for winter. Keen to see the new summer jacket as last year's were all too hot for my tastes.

I bought a few things from Aldi last year:

Gloves: Great for not so cold days. Wear something else if riding on the highway.
Jacket: Didn't fit well. Returned and bought a Dririder Nordic 2 instead (Got it for $220 price matched)
Helmet: It passes tests, so it should be safe. It is a little loud and has no anti-fog at all! After 9 months, I upgraded to a Shark speed-R2 with an anti-fog pinlock insert (Most expensive gear!)
Socks: BEST THING EVER!! So warm in winter. Need I say more?
Boots: Crap! Zip was weak. PU leather wore out in no time.

I also own a similar paddock stand that I bought off ebay at the same price. Does the job well.

    • Was the Nordic from Peter Stevens?
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/246778
Almost bought the same, but was worried about sizing without trying on first

      • No.. AMX.

    • Looking for a paddock stand myself, so I can do most of the maintenance required, seem to go through chains/sprockets every 10K and tires about 15K. Costing me a bit to get it done elsewhere. How much did you pay for yours and could you please share the ebay item link if its still available.
Better of investing in the tools myself.
All I need at this stage besides the stands is a torque wrench..waiting for sales.

      • Paddock Stands: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/381717378169 (Similar item. Old listing gone!)
Torque wrench: Dont have a good one yet. Old one is shit! (http://www.cyclingdeal.com.au/buy/1-4-2-24nm-1-way-bicycle-b…)

I have never changed tyres myself…. Afraid to do that.

        • That seems quite cheap. I was close to pulling the trigger on this one but just doing more research into them.
The wrench you've linked is super cheap..the ones I was looking at were ~250 which put me off. Will post back if I find a suitable mid range one in my hunt

I haven't changed tires or the sprockets either..will definetely give it a go next time though (chain & sprockets due now-ish)

      • seem to go through chains/sprockets every 10K and tires about 15K.

        Hayabusa?

        • no I would stay well away from them…heard to many horror stories…I've got a Ninja 650 - ride it as a daily..do about ~500ks a week on average. chain and sprockets more realistically would be 12K…pretty lax with my chain cleaning so thats probs why

    Socks are great.
Helmet passes tests and is an adequate cheap starting/2nd helmet.

Leather gear is adequate but brand name well looked after 2nd hand gear much better at same price.
Ramp works fine, so does the cover, but nothing too special about the prices.
Jeans are not worth it for the price, still have 2-3 pairs I don't wear, and i'm sure they were cheaper last year(s).

While it will likely be busy on the day, most Aldi stores will have stock for some time after and often at discounted prices.

Big shout out for this Helmet - I have one from last year and at <$80 it's terrific - My noggin previously lived in a 5yo BMW Integrale, this is more comfortable.

It's not the lightest or schuberth quiet but very stable and well ventilated. I'd procrastinated long enough to conclude it sits above the middle of the helmet market. I'd tried Sharks, Shoei's, and took back an AVG with ear ache.

Bit of a squeeze past the cheek pads if you wear glasses.

    • The helmet I got from Aldi last year didn't have the AS/NZS sticker on it and was therefore illegal. Ended up taking it back.
Haven't heard the same thing happen to anyone else so just double check that you don't end up riding around wearing an illegal helmet like I did!

    • Can you elaborate why jeans aren't worth its price ?

      Thanks

      • They were $49 a year or two ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/154867
They are not full kevlar lined, only in impact areas (many other jeans are the same).
There is a large range of similar jeans at a similar price found at most motorcycle retailers, and brand new/unworn known brand name jeans can usually be found much cheaper on ebay or otherwise.

Not Alpinestars or Dainese down vote! :P

    • Not worth saving money when it comes to gear.

You want the perfect jacket that fits well. You can get that for between $300-$1000 depending on budget but many great jackets circa $500

      Comfort overall leads to safety.

      Dainese for bigger frames.

      Alpine for smaller frames.

      • My leather Dainese gear fits perfect - it's just a matter of getting the right size.
IMHO can't go wrong with Dainese, the quality so much better than the (textile) AS jacket I had.

      • +1

I have pretty broad shoulders and the second hand alpine I bought fits rather nicely.

        • Same. Bery broad shoulders and alpine xl fits shoulders but then the arms are too short.

Dainese all the way for me. Fits me perfectly.

    • Depends where both are made. Quality went down when they started making junk in Ukraine.
Not all Alpinestars or Dainese gear but some.

  • Shame the boots are so shit. Does anyone have feedback on the quality of the jeans, leather pants or any of the jackets?

    • +2

I have the leather jacket and it's awesome for the price. I got it for 90 bucks on clearance.

Keep in mind that their advertisement of "CE Certified" doesn't mean that much. You want "CE Approved". Cerfified means they used a certified testing facility (which is good) and that it meets standards in one or more zones - not all zones. Pay the extra for approved garments, which means they are approved in all zones.

    • I vaguely remember their tags actually show that info, of which zone is what level CE. Don't count on it thou.

    • Ahh thanks heaps for the clarification between the two terms. I used to think they meant the same thing haha

  • +3

Have had the leather jacket from 2 years ago, when it was still only CE 1 rated.
Broke the main zipper tug[or whatever its called] (~6months ago, using a paper clip for replacement.)

I wear a size 50 (according to Alpine stars, and arlen ness), and the Aldi's size S, still has some room.
I wear it almost everyday commuting, its not hot for me, and its not cold either (I havnt had to use the thermal vest during during winter)

Definitely buying replacement this year, its CE 2 rated (since last year).

Got a pair gloves as backup too, its ok comfort wise.

Going to buy some kelvar jeans this time too, as long as they fit, as I noticed it says size 34 and up. I wear 32.
Same with the leathers, size M and up.

My 2c is that for commuting/newbies these (jacket and jeans) are the best value Vs Safety. Assuming the jeans have armor.

Helmets, gloves and boots, you can easily get brand names on sale for less then $500 total.
ie: My Shark RSR2 helmet - $350, dririder gloves $60 (normal price), RST race style boots $100.

  • Have any of you used the Bluetooth kit from Aldi? Is it worth the $60? (https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-13-…)
    edit: words

I haven't used it but there was talk about it on r/melbourneriders and several people posted positive reviews on it. It looks the same as one of the eBay models, haven't had a chance at seeing if they are the same and how the price compares.

    • Less than half the price, they look the same as ones I picked up last year for 43 after discount. They have armour and were comfortable enough

Regarding the stuff you posted, leather is obviously safer but who wants to wear leather pants? And these are still 40 bucks cheaper than the denim, although I don't think they will be selling out at $89 so expect them to be cheaper if you are willing to wait a week or two

  • I have found Aldi gear to be pretty damn good.

  • Big line up before 8am. All the denim jeans went first. Then Boots, Mesh jacket felt heavy and uncomfortable.
Everything in large and medium went within 5 min lol.
Was able to get the 2 types of jeans by asking if they had any out back and yep they had boxes.
So if you can't find what u want just ask.
To Aldi's credit they were really helpful.

    • I went down to pick up a paddock stand and some socks. Got there 5 minutes after opening and it was crazy. Hot items were the helmets, boots and leather jackets - didn't see many people going for the jeans/textile jackets.

    • By mesh jacket, do you mean the "summer" jacket or the "touring" jacket?

      • Summer jacket

    • I found the summer jacket incredibly light compared to my other jackets and picked one up.
Helmets and jeans are always the first to go, they had quite a few of the paddock stands and bike covers which was nice to see.

  • +1

I tried 5 Aldi stores to find a leather jacket in medium… the only one I saw was being tried on by a small lady at the first store I went to, just after opening :-(
All of the others only had L or bigger
