  • Can someone recommend me a good bottle of red wine ($100-$150)? Something a white, middle-aged woman with kids would enjoy. That's all I know about her. xD

Can't go wrong with cask wine, mate!

      • hahahaahhaahahahahahahhaa laughing so hard!!!!

        • I don't get it. Can you explain?

        • +3

          @maolin95:

          Unidan here!

Cask wine; wine packaged in a box, sealed inside a foil bag. Can be bought in high amounts ranging from a litre to a gallon.

Typically referred by blokes and backpackers alike as 'goon' (derived from the word 'flagon'), they are often available at a very low cost, yet yielding a high alcohol %. Great for casual parties and evening drinks, but more often than not, many brands taste absolutely disgusting and should be drunk ice-cold or mixed.

Might be a good gift for those not too acquainted with wines or have limited knowledge of it…

        • @scrimshaw: excellent explanation. Thank you!

I actually just bought 6 boxes of cask wine, it's fine for the daily drinking

      • +2

Fancy some 'Chateau de Cardboard' Hillary?

      • Is that what is known as a "goon bag"? I don't drink wine at all.

If she's not your mum, any bottles of red with a condom over it and she'll get your point.

I'm not sure how much the kids would enjoy the wine but all right.

That's fine, the placenta will filter all the bad stuff out anyway.

    • Kellermeister Wild Witch. May or may not go down well.

I'd check out the cellar releases at the store. Hard to go past a good bottle with some age to it. If you really want to spend that much, then there's a lot to choose from like https://m.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_380853/penfolds-st-he… - which still leaves enough for a bottle of fizz.

    • +1

      Penfolds Bin 389 is fantastic.

Spending a large amount of cash on a bottle of wine for somebody who does not have a refined (practised) palate is just silly.
Spend $20 to $25 on a nice bottle of Cab Sav or if she does not drink red wine much at all - get some Merlot or perhaps even Moscato (Brown Bros. on special at Dan Murphy this week).
Your choice of course - but honestly - I have gifted fine red wine before and watched it slugged like cordial with no real appreciation of what was offered.
Failing that, and determined to persevere with the original concept, you really can't go past a bottle of Penfolds Bin 389 at a vintage that suits your budget.

    • Reading a few people recommending Penfold 389, I gave in to temptation and opened a bottle of the 1998 vintage, to see how it is faring now. (Penfolds' prices used to be a lot more affordable, I think they cost around $20 when I bought them, when newly released).

It fits your price range now. I just tried it, it is nice drinking now, but taste like it can still benefit from further cellaring.

I am assuming the wine you are getting is meant for drinking fairly soon. If you are getting a fairly big Aussie wine, such as 389 at the price range you are suggesting, best to select one with some age on it. Otherwise, it will be too young and won't be enjoyable drinking.

I also agree with bishoz' comment: expensive wines, especially the bold-style Aussie wines, may not be fully appreciated by the gift recipient (know this from experience). It may be safer to get a more mellow, European style wine, which is quite full-bodied, with beautiful bouquet, such as this Marqués de Murrieta. They cost a fraction. But perhaps a gift of several of these, may be appreciated more then one of the very expensive ones :-)

Cash back is very slow at the moment from Cashrewards. I had one over due transaction over 120 day, one over 90 days.

    • +1

Depends on the retailer. I find they are quick with eBay and Assos but slower with bike retailers like Wiggle and Chain Reaction Cycles. Not really their fault as the cashback has to be tracked, approved and paid to CR before they can put it into your account. Affects every cashback site too.

Andrew here from Cashrewards. Can you please PM me your Cashrewards email and we will look into this. We are working very hard with all our stores to speed up approval times and a number of our stores are now paying much quicker. Apologies for the inconvenience.

      • Hi Andrew,

A number of my Dan Murphy purchases around 1 Apr have had their estimated approval dates removed. It is close to 4 months, and according to https://www.cashrewards.com.au/dan-murphys, confirmation is 90 days and rewards could be 7 days after that.

It is not exceptionally long, I am prepared to wait a bit longer; but it is the removal of the estimated dates that seemed unusual to me. So, should I wait a while more, or should I send you the details now to have a look at?

Your advice much appreciated, many thanks in advance.

        • +3

          Hi Bluesky,

Thanks for letting us know. We have a bug with this that removes approval dates and we are working to correct this issue asap. This transaction should have been approved by now and you shouldn't have to wait this long for your rewards. Can you PM me your Cashrewards email and we will chase up with Dan Murphys tomorrow and see if we can resolve asap.

          Thanks
          Andrew

        • @ahc99: Thanks for the quick response! I have PM'ed you my cashreward details. Cheers.

      • Hi, I have a similar problem with a purchase from March with Dan Murphys. Hoping you can help also - just about to pm you. Thanks in advance!

Hi, Thanks again for sorting my cashback out - really appreciate it.

      • Hi Andrew, I have also PM you my email. I too have rewards not credited/paid for quite some months. Hope you can help.

    • +1

Sometimes you need to email CR tech support to get a long delayed cashback approved. Don't use the online help section as that just tells you to keep waiting (seemingly forever). Email them directly to get a response.

      • +1 Have always had a prompt response and issue sorted out.

Just wanted to say thanks to TA and the team at Cashrewards for sorting out my missing transactions today.
The customer service is impeccable and very much appreciated.
    Time to stock the bar!

Although the 12% isn't valid for the entirety, I think the expiry of the OP should be the 8th August.

  • Any idea if it would be possible to combine this with the Woolworths EFTPOS deal starting tomorrow?

    • So if I took the Penfolds Grange 2008 for example (picked a high value one just to highlight the savings):

      • Buy $800 of Woolies GC for $760 (5% off from CR)
      • Buy $700 of EFTPOS GC from Woolies for $741.65 using the Woolies GC and get $70 Woolies Rewards
        • At this point you have $700 EFTPOS GC, $58.35 Woolies GC and $70 Woolies Rewards
      • Buy Penfolds Grange 2008 ($745) using both the EFTPOS GC and Woolies GC and get $89.40 in CR Credit
        • At this point you have a Grange ($745), $13.35 EFTPOS GC (700 + 58.35 – 745), $70 Woolies Rewards and $89.40 Cash Rewards credit

This gives you $917.75 value for $760 outlay – a gain of $157.75

      • +1

Nice maths hehe, but just don't drink it, or it will be a $760 loss!

      • +1

How are you going to pay with EFTPOS online? You'd have to buy wish gift cards with the EFTPOS ones to pay online.

  • Regarding the giftcard, Will the balance be forfeited if you don't use the entire giftcard in one shop?

    • Not at all. You can use multiple times until it is depleted. The card has a 1 year expiry.

        thank you!
