It just proves how little competition there is in the booze market that they can afford to do this.
    Margins must be huge.

    • What's Dan Murphy's share of the liquor market?

In 2014 they had ~50% of the online market in their pockets.

    • +2

Dan Murphy's wine prices are really bad compared to the online wine retailers. Goes to show there must be a massive markup.

10% off seems good but it's not really that great. I haven't bought wine from Dans for a very long time.

      • Where do you get yours mate?

        • Depends on price / availability, Winemarket / Grays Online / Vinomofo are regulars for me.

        • @chiefbodge:

          Cool!

          Are you Red or White?

Any recommendation on a red? Learning how to drink lol

        • I buy wine from winemarket, vinomofo, different drop, my wine guy and winemakers choice. Dans is not bad price wise but the others offer more varieties

      • Last deal we got was impossible to beat.

        6x Yellowtail, 1x Yellowtail Bubbles $40

      • +3

I disagree. I'm usually quite satisfied with Dan's prices. When you're a member- those monthly member deals always make it a little sweeter. And I love the fact that there are a number of stores around Sydney. So much cheaper and varieties compared to Liquorland, BWS, etc. Don't buy too often from online stores but my research and comparison with Dan's has always led me to stick with Dan.
Thanks TA/Cashrewards for bumping this up to 10%. Probably work on making the money available quicker now?

      • Isnt that Dans will beat any price by 10%?

        • They don't advertise it but apparently there are price guarentees

    • +12

Margin in the wine industry is around 30% for retailers at standard prices, 10-15% on promo prices.
Slabs of beer, margins are 10% max, more likely around 8%.

Source: ran a bottleshop for 5 years

Margins aren't actually as huge as you might think for Dan's. This is one of those times they're willing to go for volume rather than big margins, in order to drive sales. Australia day weekend in a country that loves its drink - the amount of sales you could drive then is beyond belief. How do I know this? Until a few months ago when I left for greener pastures, I was a buyer for the company.

    • +1

Not just margins and volume, but selling wine under their own, made-up private (or homebrand) labels is increasing, too. Plenty of margin in those!

      https://www.choice.com.au/shopping/everyday-shopping/superma…

Lots of articles around Woolies and Coles' acquisitions and cornering of the wine market in Australia. We could really stand to have more transparent labelling.

      • +1

Easy enough to work out, Woolies are supplied by "International Liquor Wholesalers" and Coles by "James Busby Wines", both of which they own and control.

        • +2

Oh you're not telling me anything I don't know, but of the thousands - or millions - of Aussies who go through DM/Metcash doors on a weekly basis, I'd wager that a good amount, perhaps even the majority of them, don't know that (or perhaps care, but that's a slightly different argument). If it's enough for some winemaker lobbyists to be demanding more action, than I'd also say that it's still not easy enough to work out:

          http://www.afr.com/lifestyle/food-and-wine/woolworths-coles-…

As long as don't end up with under-effective star ratings on wine bottles, lol.

All that said, there's nothing intrinsically wrong with these labels, or cheap wine. YMMV ¯_(ツ)_/¯

        • +1

@LaTerrible: I think they need the identification for home brand - people are generally appalled when you point it out to them… but that may just show how little they actually know or care about good wine!

Not only are the margins pretty generous, but im sure CashRewards is not passing on the full savings to us.
I can get much higher cashback through Smartdiscounts across every Dan Murphy product category.

Cashback on Wine: 10.00% vs 10.35%
Cashback on Gift Cards: 3.00% vs 5.00%
Cashback on Beer: 3.50% vs 6.15%
Cashback on Champagne & Sparkling Wine: 3.50% vs 6.15%
Cashback on Cider: 6.70% vs 10.35%
Cashback on Mixed Items: 3.50% vs 6.15%
      Cashback on Non-Alcoholic Products: 6.00% vs 10.35%
Cashback on ShipSmart: 6.00% vs 9.5%
Cashback on Spirits: 5.00% vs 8.25%

      Proof http://imgur.com/7Y93wqe

So come on CashRewards, why don't you actually pass the full savings on to the public

  • Bugger, placed an order yesterday. Any recourse TA?

    • Call and ask for a refund, then reorder :)

      • Would've but it was a 2 hour click and collect I got yesterday.

        • +1

If you really want the 10% on wine, then take the items back and refund, reorder then pick up. Seems like a lot of work though.

    • @bym
"Bigger, placed an order yesterday. …"

Me too, over $175. Would have waited if I had known.

  • Increased from 8%?

    • +4

      Hi sween64. Was 7%.

      • Thanks.

  • 10% Cashback on wine. Time to stock up!

I see there is free delivery for orders over $300. If I order less, is there cashback on the delivery charge?

    • Free bottle (or case) of wine with every flight ordered? (:

    • Hi IWTF. Dan's (and most stores) unfortunately do not pay us commission on any delivery charges.

    • Can you click and collect IWTF? That'll be free isn't it?

  • Just in time to buy stuff for an engagement party.

any good single malt whisky on bargain???

I bought the Lagavulin for $85 a few days ago which was pretty good :D

Edit: The Lagavulin's are still on special for $83.90, just ordered another 2 more :D

    • Lagavulin is a beautiful Islay whisky, nice choice. If you have the chance, if you can find a bottle, you should taste the Bruichladdich Octomore 6.1. It is a thing of beauty.

      • For the Octomore 6.1, what's a good price to pay for it? It's currently at $170 from Dan's

I've also tried the Ardbeg one which wasn't bad. Next up I'm gonna get the Glenfiddich and laphroaig when they are on special

        • I do not see it coming down at all. So, if you're after something special it's the thing to get.

    • not 10% cashback though, thats just for wine.

  • +1

Just in time for Oz Day, thanks TA!!

The email cashrewards sent out is misleading and deceptive

"Dan Murphy's cashback increased - now up to an incredible 10%‏"

It doesn't mention it only applies to wine…

    • +2

I think 'now up to' kinda says it all

      • +2

        It's gone from 7%, up to 10%…

But it doesn't say it's only for wine…

It wouldn't have been hard for them to state it's "10% cash back for wine" unless of course their intention was to mislead people…

          @nocure:

          Full Dan Murphy's rate card:

Is nowhere to be seen in that email.. Did you receive it?

        • @jv:
When you read the email, you would've clicked it, then seen the rate card for Dan Murphy. Pretty easy to see that it's wine being given the 10%.

        • +2

That is quite true. I nearly fell for it.

        • +1

          @crouchie:

When you read the email, you would've clicked it, then seen the rate card for Dan Murphy

There is no rate card in the email title or the contents.

        • -1

          @jv:
I'm talking about actually going through the cash back process.
Every store has their rate card clearly displayed on the CR site before you click through to proceed to browse and purchase.
And the email isn't misleading, if it said "10% on everything" but it provided that only on wines, that's deceptive. It didn't, so its not deceptive.
          Quite simple really.

        • PricePal are offering 6.15% until 26/01/16 could be a better deal depending on what you buy and especially if you have buddy bonus.

  • -4

    Guys this is huge!
Cashrewards and TA have done it again!
Cash back as well as 5% off WISH cards makes this a bargain :)
Thanks heaps TA and CR, it's time to stock up for Straya day.

    • Ummmm, their intermittent reliability counters any percentage increases. So a questionable deal at best.

  • +1

    You're all wining a bit much…
Ha.. Hah.. Ha.. I'll show myself out.

On a serious note, not much of a whine drinker but pretty average looking deal. If it was store wide we'd be in for a real deal.

  • +1

TA, awesome deal. I only drink organic red wine as the preservatives screw with my head. I can highly recommend Temple Bruer if anyone is after a great organic red wine. The price is already great.

    https://m.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_911408/temple-bruer-p…

  • Damn it ! Placed an order last week and missed this awesome deal ! Will have to order some more :)

  • -1

This cash back is a joke. I have hundreds of dollars sitting in my account but can't get any of it because of stupid waiting periods. Shouldn't take more than a week to payout.

    • +1

cnrmlj, I believe this has nothing to do with Cashrewards. The stores have a period of time they need to wait for return periods to pass etc before they actually pay Cashrewards their commission.
It's the stores controlling the waiting period, not cashrewards. They make the funds available as soon as the stores make it available to them. As I've read many times on OzB, TA and Andrew are happy to follow up if you think the waiting period has passed.

    • -1

It is a bit annoying. My first Dan Murphy's cash back was finally fully processed a week ago, after making a purchase in late October. But my understanding is that it's not CR's fault. It's the retailer that releases the funds and needs to make sure customers aren't going to scam the system by buying good, returning them, and then claiming a cash back.

Why it takes almost 3 months however, I don't know. Surely nobody returns alcohol after a few weeks?

      • Perhaps something to do with CC chargeback timeframes?

  • +1

I'm still waiting for my payments from November last year (eBay). Is this normal?

    • +2

I am waiting for one through Scoopon since 21/10/2015
How much longer it may take ?

      • Im the same. The scoopon one is my longest wait, all others seem to clear after about 90 days.

  • So I just bought some wine from Dan's and it did not appear in Cashrewards MyRewards listing. Does it take a while?

    • I've had to wait up to a day from Dans

  • -1

Have you increased the cashback on liver transplants

  • Oh theres Cashback on Gift Cards: 3.00%? Which we can pay using our discounted Wish cards? ("Rewards are payable when you pay for your purchase with a Dan Murphy's or WISH gift card")

  • Buy $ 100 WISH gift card from Cashrewards with 5% discount = $ 5 saving

Spend $ 100 Wish Gift Card to purchase wine and get 10% cashback = $ 10 saving.

CMIIW but this is practically a 15% discount on wine purchases!

    • Not really as you've got to factor in that Cashrewards takes 3 months to clear and so you've lost interest on the money during that time ;)

  • Good deal. Anyone with big w gift card (it was 10% off) can use it for danmurphys. I know it's not CR's fault but it does take a long time for Dm cash back. Who really returns them and what is the return period?

    • sadly, there is even folks in this post wanting to return items. Items which they agreed to yesterday/last week/month to take advantage of this deal

  • -1

Remember not to mix your drinks (as you get lower rate cashback, I don't care if you neck red wine after whisky)

  • $1 CB on Golden Oaks 4L goon at $10 is legit.

  • Dammit I just bought something last night with the 8% :(

  • I bought some Sake and it seems to be 5% rather than 10% according to the cashrewards email. So it's considered spirit and not wine even thought Sake is Japanese rice wine? I guess this is about how Dan Murphys classify Sake rather than Cashrewards.

    From http://www.esake.com/Knowledge/FAQ/faq.html
"Sake is not a distilled beverage, and is not even remotely related to gin, vodka or other spirits."

  • I tried to open the cashback link and it just closes. Doesn't happen with other cashbank links.
