I had that with a Chinese airline when the plane started to descend into Shanghai. Followed shortly after by a terrifying patch of turbulence that had shit flying everywhere and attendants screaming at people to get into their seats.

flew Air China internally this year - Shanghai to Guangzhou. Spartan. Ultra basic everything - stale bread roll, no tv, no smiles. Would hope 20hr trip to Europe would be a different operation.
I think a 20hr operation would be more enjoyable!

OMG guys I didn't know it was that bad! I flew about 10 years ago with China Eastern and they were okay. I need to go to Italy to see family at some stage soon, but I will have to ignore any chinese airline then.
china southern and china eastern are actually ok - I had a great experience with china eastern, and my girlfriend was using china southern to munich (no dramas either).
air china seems to be the worst of the lot, but hey - it's 800 bucks

The problem is that the flight attendants have very poor English. As a mandarin speaker I find them alright lol
Service ain't the greatest but definitely not bad as a Chinese speaker. I find Jetstar service to be worse comparatively.
But yes if you only speak English I'd avoid Chinese airlines lol.
What you guys are describing about the passengers are the current generation of local Chinese who don't know plane etiquette because they hadn't flown airplanes until they were in their 30s-40s
Since the economy boom of the past 2 decades they have wealth beyond imagination but their standards are still back 2 decades ago.
