  • Perfect timing just bought a chromecast

  • Is chrome cast can be used for mirroring in the car?

    • Which mirror are you referring too?

      • iPhone navigation to my Honda car via chrome cast. Is it possible?

        • Where do you intend on plugging it in to?

        • @tranqme: plug the chrome cast in the car via hdmi and then connect iPhone to chrome cast to do mirroring. Is it possible?

        • +5

@shibu-thomas: Your car has a HDMI port?

        • @tranqme: yep.. Honda Hrv …

        • +1

          @tranqme: Does it work ??

        • @shibu-thomas:
I'm assuming the hdmi is an input for video/audio. If so then yes it should work

        • @MountFranklin: if it's an input then it's possible that it will be disabled while driving and only play while the handbrake is applied. don't know anything about your car, just mentioning it because I have installed a few DVD systems in cars and it always has a cable that needed to be attached to the handbrake. I just attached it to another earth point though to get around that

        • @tight-a55: Thanks for the info.. But I was looking to screen mirror my iPhone navigation to the car screen via chrome cast. Please let me know if that works ok?
          Thanks

        • +1

          @shibu-thomas:

No, you cannot mirror your iPhone to a Chromecast.

        • @shibu-thomas:

Don't you have a rear-view mirror in your car? Just stick the iPhone in the back seat - mirroring done!

  • Chromecast is now OOS

    • -1

Chromecast was added to your shopping cart

    • -6

      Chromecast is now OOS

      plural noun: oos
a honeyeater (bird) found in Hawaii, now probably extinct, which had a thin curved bill and climbed about on tree trunks.

  • If you have an iPhone, I don't see the point of a cellular iPad (unless you travel overseas a lot). It's easy to just use Continuity and your iPhone's data.

    • I don't see the point of a cellular iPad

      The GPS works better…

      • another 800 bug for a better GPS?LOL guess ur bill gates

        • I don't think Bill Gates will be using a apple product :p

    • +3

I was doubtful about the usefulness of a cellular iPad but I'll tell you, it's been once of THE best features of the iPad.

Even if you don't travel much, I've found it useful and far less hassle than having to tether.

      • far less hassle than having to tether.

How is it a hassle? Mine connects automatically.

        • Continuity only works if they're on the same WiFi network though…

Plus using the phone as a hotspot kills the battery pretty quick-smart

      • Also Optus and I assume the other carriers to, do data sharing over multiple sims. So I have one big phone plan for data and I share it onto my iPad. No second data plan required.

    • Wifi iPad doesn't have GPS, hotspot drains battery and is a pain, most people have data share anyway.

  • +3

    I ll wait till ipad air 2 Wi-Fi + Cellular 64G under $650, coz its a (profanity) 2014 thing

  • Good deal, when does this expire?

    • +1

says the 31st July, the Optus deal ends this wknd

      • oh,cheers. didnt notice.

  • Will wait for WiFi only version on sale

    • officeworks have good prices on non wifi, 64GB $674, 16GB $579

  • i still dont know what does chromecast do.

does it have a remote? or you control it over your phone?

    it use wifi right?

      • lolol thanks so much man, google is way too hard for me :P

    • -4

No remote, they are useless for this reason alone.

    • Was in the same boat "what does chromecast do?", but now I use it daily, more than regular tv

      1. simplest use case - you watching youtube stuff on your mobile device (phone, tablets), or things from your media server such as Plex, and want to view it on large screen tv, you cast that video to chromecast which is attached to your large screen tv. voila

Anyone know how do you redeem the $20 google play credit?

    • +1

Would like to know this myself. Didn't get a card when I bought it today. Anyone know the story?

-edit I bought the audio I see the gift card is for the Chromecast2.

  • Does the chromecast 2 still demand that you be connected to a F*** network with intetnet to be of use?

    • +2

not anymore but it now requires alien signal from Mars

  • +2

thx op for the post. bought 2 at harvey norman & franchisee didn't have a clue about the promotion, tried to tell me google play gift card was via redemption. not taking him on his word i contacted hn via live chat before leaving store premises. after about 1/2 hour of waiting they too didn't have a clue & thought the offer was via redemption. went back seeking refund & was again assured by franchisee that google play gift card was via redemption. tried 1 at home. surprise surprise there was no redemption details in the box or via the chromecast website. took them back for a full refund. if google play card was via redemption why the wording play card & the picture in the hn catalogue (which the mrs found later on) of a play card? surely if it was via redemption the ad would read play credit. hn need a good, hard poke in the eye.

    • Thanks for the heads up. I was going to check this out today but I'll go in being a little more cautious now.

From doing a bit of research, this was offered in December last year (in the US I'm guessing?). It was by redemption directly from Google and advertised on their offers page, but there's absolutely no mention of it now.

So I'm guessing that either the deal isn't live yet, or HN have stuffed up.

From the T&Cs on the HN page:

Offer ends 31st of July 2016. Various postage and handling fees may be applicable in order to receive the bonus and are dependent on the supplier’s offer. Terms and conditions apply. See in store for details.

I'll see if my local store knows anything about it and report back. Be great if others could do the same :)

      • +1

phoned different hn to find out if the promotion would be honoured. they weren't aware of the promotion but would honour it but had no play gift cards…duh! finally found a hn who knew about the promotion & had the physical play gift cards. the guy is a genius & should be promoted to ceo of promotions.

    • My HN included a $20 google play gift card when i picked it up this arvo.

    • Yeah it should just come with your order from what I heard from chat, it's not a redemption

    • +2

I had the same problem but they discounted $20 off the chromecast and told me to buy the play credit online. So i got the device for $38 :D

      • I don't want the $20 google play gift card so I would prefer the discount as well. Which store did you get it from mec?

        • Balgowlah

        • @mec:

Awww, I was hoping that you were going to say it was a Melbourne store. In that case, does anyone want to buy the $20 google play gift card from me then?

      • Wow, I'll have to try this. My only local store (Albury) had no gift cards at all.

        • Make sure you show them the promotion on your phone. They will probably then spend the next 5 minutes trying to find it on the system. Then just ask if you could just pay for the chromecast without the giftcard for $38. I'm sure that could work.

    • "hn need a good, hard poke in the eye."

      I approve this message.

    • I had the same issue (Richmond VIC), I kept asking about the google play card and the floor staff had no idea about it. After a while the store manager (who knew about the promotion) came out and informed me that they had no google play cards left and instead gave me $20 cashback!

  • Can you use a chromecast to play audio/video files from your computer over wifi? Nothing on their website states this at all. It all seems to be via apps and the chrome browser.

So if I just wanted to play my windows media audio/video it doesn't state that it can be done.

    • You can. There is an app called 'Videostream' that lets you do this. You download it as a chrome extension and can also download the app for it on your phone. This works for video. I'm unsure whether you can do the same with audio.

      • Thanks, after doing some research, it appears that Google Chromecast is finally getting better and there is a beta function that now allows you to mirror your entire desktop. Why this wasn't around from day 1 is anyone's guess. In that case I'm definitely buying it tomorrow, thanks OP! Nothing beats media player classic home cinema when it comes to remembering exactly which files you played and where your up to automatically with no confirmation required.

  • Officeworks will price match the good guys and sell it to you for $52.25 if you're not interested in the play credit because let's face it, we've got too much already with the rewards app.

Just BEWARE of Harvey Norman's sneaky 20% restock fee if you buy from there. There is no changing your mind unless you're willing to fork out the hefty fee.

  • Having played with my Chromecast, I can now confirm that it does not work without an internet connection.

You can set it up, but it won't let you cast anything over the computer without an internet connection. Google needs to spy on you before they allow you to use it. This is ridiculous and makes it viable only at home. I have no issues with their need to spy on what I watch and how I use it but please don't turn my chromecast into a paperweight when I don't have the internet connection.

Furthermore, I read something about it requiring a constant internet connection. So you could find that your Chromecast will suddenly die if your internet drops out for 30 seconds.

  • Chromecast currently cannot cast the H265 codec and it cannot natively cast it ever as Google never included it in the hardware. Trying to use Plex, videostream or the useless H265 pop out player addon is all a huge waste of time. Use MPC (Media player classic) with Unified Remote and change your resolution to 720p, home cinema with no wires or moving around done, no need to run upstairs just to go to the next episode or rewind 5 seconds etc.

The only way to see H265 or easily view and control any local video file is via cast desktop, the most you'll get out of it is 720p (just passable with minimum stutter). It is incapable of casting at 1080p without severe stutter.

You can cast on the go from your laptop if you have a phone with an internet connection as everything can go off the phone's wifi hotspot.

You can get all your codecs with MPC here - https://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
