  • I'ld just put in a REALLY slow laptop with a dying HDD that's slowed to a crawl and claim a free Dell

    • +1

And password locked BIOS with CPU clock throttled.

      • Nice!

Just make sure the specs are met, 32-bit:

        Processor:
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC

        RAM:
1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit

        Hard disk space:
        16 GB for 32-bit

Underclock the shit out of that 2GB RAM!

        • My old netbook still fits this criteria.

  • Gosh…. I jumped in here thinking I had THE solution.

Over the next 2 weeks (until 29 July) I am planning a frenzy of "Windows 10" to get everything built, upgraded etc. For a variety of personal reasons I have left it far too late. I have literally crates full of unbuilt PC parts that will need to be completed and the installs done!

I have to drag out all my old Win 7 and Win8 licences, allocate them to machines. I have to decide the final specs SSD+MoBo+GFX for each machine, build them all (Win10 upgrade is licenced to a HardwareID) then create spare machines from the remaining leftover parts.

    1 x Netbook
2 x HP laptops (SSD + CPU upgrades)
    3 x new high spec i5/i7 machines
2 x new utility boxes (old hardware)
    1 x HP server
    1 x File server
And whatever parts are left into more.

    (profanity) not enough time!

And I thought Microsloth was gunna come and fix everything for free!

    • No, you just need to choose the mobo - the license is tied to that. You're not a true ozbargainer if you can't pull a couple of all nighters to get several hundred bucks worth of free upgrades.

      • Licence is more than Mobo - it'll drop off verified if you change the HDD.

I have to build each machine, then install Win7 or Win8, then update all drivers, then run Win10 upgrade. Once they are verified online it's cool, can fix the mess up later.

You're not a true ozbargainer if you can't pull a couple of all nighters to get several hundred bucks worth of free upgrades.

I know, I know. I am ashamed to admit how poorly I have managed this. I'm like "it's cool, no rush - there is 12 months to do it"…. for the past frigging year.

Problem is that I am still at work at 10pm on Friday night, and have been doing all nighters for other things.

[sobs] - all these SSDs I've collected from Ozbargain deals. In boxes, unused. Samsungs and Kingston and I cannot even remember what I've collected. And where the hell did I put them?

        • +1

Licence is more than Mobo - it'll drop off verified if you change the HDD.

          I beg to differ.

I replaced an old PC's HDD with a new SSD, installed W7 and upgraded to W10 to claim the free licence. Then I put back the original HDD and kept using it. A couple of months later I put in a blank HDD and performed a fresh install of W10 from DVD. W10 picked up the free licence from Microsoft automatically. W10 activation doesn't seem to care about your storage system.

        • @alvian:
It is true that they claim they will accept a couple of component upgrades before it bjorks… but who knows how close they control that?

        • @xywolap: The fingerprint and activation check is a joke. My 100% legal key, purchased directly from Microsoft, suddenly failed activation. Online and telephone re-activation both failed. MS claimed my key has been activated on more than 1 PC. What a joke because it is installed on my everyday main laptop and I wouldn't be using that key on anything else. Being a laptop I could not upgrade the hardware in any significant way.

I ended up talking to a real person on the phone. No question was asked as to whether I actually own this key. She simply overrode the block on the activation server and gave me the code. When I asked why the key would fail activation and would it happen again (did somebody steal my key), her reply was "sometimes this happens and you just have to call us".

        • then install Win7 or Win8, then update all drivers, then run Win10 upgrade

You no longer need to install Win7/Win8 first. You can just fresh install Win10 and put in the Win7 or Win8 key to activate, even if you have never installed Win7 or Win8 on that machine. They changed this since late last year or early this year, just make sure you get the latest ISO.

  • +4

Looking forward to upgrade from windows 98.

    • +2

You'll be instantly familiar with colour scheme, last 18 years didn't happen.

  • +2

I hate Windows 10, constantly sucking up data even though I've hacked my connection to be "metered" as we don't have ADSL so rely on 4G @ $10/gb. Eg How do I stop those wasteful login pictures from being updated, grrrr!

    • +1

By setting up your own login picture.

    • +3

      4G @ $10/gb ouch!
Why not get a much cheaper deal?

      • +1

Only have good Telstra in our area, others get overloaded and grind to a halt in holiday periods (NSW Central Coast) and I need net for business. NBN available on the main road but not in our street. Was meant to be available June 11 lol. So in a holding pattern….

        • Looked at your location in your profile before I posted, so guessed it may only be Telstra mobile broadband that is reliable in your area.

Still that's very expensive & would expect cheaper data should be available from Telstra or other provider using Telstra network.

So understand the desire to avoid high downloads. Every time I connect my Windows tablet to the internet, I get worried about the cost. But I'm on $30 Telstra prepaid starter packs at 33c/GB (cost $1 each ages ago) & throw out after using 3GB + included calls. But I don't need large amounts of data - like with a business.

          Hope NBN arrives soon :-)

    • Thers a couple of good free programs to effectively stop all leaks.

  • Stupid question - If I were to build a new PC, how would I take my Windows 10 copy with me? Is that even possible due to the hardware it's locked to?

    • +1

You can't - free upgrade is only for Windows 7 & 8 machines. Install 7 or 8, register, then upgrade.
Otherwise, wait a year or two - once Microsoft's monetisation techniques of your private information are fully realised and their application store is fuller, they'll be giving 10 away.

  • Bring your $60 Pendo pads!

  • lol this!

Not worth even if M$ is paying you to: Why Windows 10 Sucks

    • +2

I really like windows 10, despite a few annoyances.

    • +2

I hope people did read the article, nevertheless, it is quite informative and from a person who worked at M$

Your negative vote on this post has been revoked by the community as this comment of yours has received too many negative votes.

  • -7

Not even if you paid me

    • +3

Powerful reasoning that. Not a valid eng.

  • +1

my tablet running Win8 shut down for a 'compulsory' update, after which it would not turn on again and only later did I find out this was a 'known issue' with no fixes available, so I had to reformat. Lost work because of MS bullshit. They can go fack themselves seriously

    • +1

Likewise for me too, the upgrade bricked my pendo pad 8. Sad…

Went in today and saw a guy walked out with his new Dell. He was upgrading a netbook.

When it was my netbook's turn, the staff ran a PowerShell program for additional checking. It reported yellow status indicating possible driver problem, but it did not tell you what the problem was. This was all the excuse MS needed to refuse me the upgrade challenge. (Free labour to upgrade to Windows 10 - yes, get a Dell if MS could not do it in time - no.) It was also claimed that it is impossible to detail this additional requirement in the T&C. There is another set of internal company requirements that the PC has to meet, but the staff won't show me these rules.

The other status are red meaning cannot upgrade at all, and green meaning zero problem.

The staff offered me a clean upgrade of Windows 10 from Windows 7 Ultimate, and then proceeded to wipe the HDD (and all the product keys) and installed 10 Home. They claimed they were unable to recover the W7 key. (Obviously the word "Magical Jelly Bean" is banned in MS.) Then they wondered why the damn thing won't activate with the XP product key printed on the sticker underneath the netbook.

Does Windows 10 work on my netbook? Despite the yellow status, everything worked. My guess is the yellow status was picking up on the low resolution built-in screen.

So now I have an incorrect edition of Windows 10 on my netbook that refuses to activate and an W7 key in my system backup image. What will I do? Restore W7 to get to my keys and re-upgrade to W10. Thanks for doubly wasting my time.

Incompetent is what I think of MS's tech support. Be warned if MS offers you a clean install because it will probably stuff up. If you don't have a system backup prior to visiting MS then you are really, really stuffed.

    • I bet other requirements include hard drive speed and health. Any recourse on getting at least the win 10 pro licence? Can you bring several machines or is the competition limited to only one machine per customer at a time?

      • +1

One PC per person, ever. They record your personal and PC details. You can try again with another PC and another family member.

Getting Win 10 Pro licence: According to MS idiots, typing my Win 7 Ultimate key into "Change Product Key" in Win 10 Activation, and Win 10 Home will magically turn into Win 10 Pro. EPIC FAIL because it won't happen. This is indicative of the quality of advice from the staff — Nothing is 100% correct but all sounded plausible. If I was to give such bad advice in my work, I would have fired myself.

Here is how to do it right. It means finding the Win 7 key on the COA (sticker), or restoring my Win 7 backup and extracting the key. If you can't find the COA or if you don't have a backup, then your free Win 10 entitlement and your paid Win 7 are both GONE (officially). MS will not lift a finger to help because you would have signed a waiver absolving them of anything and everything that could go wrong.

Unofficially and illegally, you can st..l a key from another computer, or you can pir..e Win 7 and upgrade through it. Technically feasible but DON'T DO IT!

  • @alvian, I think your license would have worked if they installed the Pro version instead.
The one PC per person thing, will they still upgrade other machines for free outside of the offer?

Edit: Sorry, meant this as a reply from your previous comment.

    • +1

No, when they gave up on upgrading my "yellow status" netbook, they did a clean (wipe disk) install instead. However, they did not extract the Win7 key while Win7 was still operating (I don't know why they thought the XP key on the bottom sticker was for Win7 Home). Whether Win10 Pro or Home, it won't activate with their method. If they hadn't given up but firstly performed an in-place upgrade, Win10 would activate on Pro on all subsequent installations.

Again, bad quality advice and bad work practices — failing to check everything is correct and in place before performing an irreversible procedure — tech support that fails the most basic skills test.

They are happy AFAIK to "upgrade" more than one PCs. For them it just means sticking in an USB stick and reboot. Green status machines are trouble-free. Yellow status machines might not work but they rely on the waiver. Red status machines don't qualify. But will you trust them to do a proper job? I wouldn't. It is easier, faster, and safer to DIY (the most troublesome component is usually the video driver, so do your research). I went in today only because I was confident my netbook would score me a new Dell. It would have, until I encountered this unpublished rule of yellow status machines cannot enter the challenge.

      • From experience, Windows 10 is picky when letting you activate a Pro license key on a Home install and vice versa. But since you have Ultimate, your key wouldn't be the one on the machine's sticker (Edit: I forgot, I though you were able to provide the Ultimate key but they had a Home install, hence failed activation). The key on the sticker should have worked for the Win 10 Home version though. They also lowered the required resolution so it shouldn't have been the reason for the yellow status.

Yeah, I don't think they'll confirm that your existing apps work either. Their only QA would be to ensure a successful boot up.

I think those going only for the purpose of getting the Dell prize really should image their HDD then install Win 10 as a trial. If it boots up fine at the end, don't bother going, otherwise, restore the drive and try your luck.

Edit: clarified "key on machine's sticker"

        • The key on the bottom of the netbook says Windows XP Home Edition. Can techies not read? Did they not understand Windows XP is not upgradeable to W10? They simply assumed I was using Windows 7 Home with the key printed on the sticker. I doubt the backend techie even bothered booting into the OS to check. Well, I did make the netbook work at a snail's pace. So painful to use. System de-optimization :-)

        • @alvian: My netbook had Win 7 Home by default so I thought yours would too. Maybe I should give it a try too, you did say someone successfully scored the Dell with one. Do you know what netbook model the other guy had? I hope none of your de-optimisations caused the yellow status. I wonder if available RAM after boot is also considered in the check.

        • @scupper: I went to sleep, sorry scupper. That lucky guy had an Acer netbook, model unknown because I didn't ask. Windows 10 upgrade requires 1GB/2GB minimum (32-/64-bit) RAM, but without access to "Microsoft Upgradeability Tool" (that's what one staff called it) I cannot say for sure if it flags low working RAM. I doubt it does but I have no proof.

I cannot tell you what made MUT returned yellow, but I can repeat more half truths for you.

Me: Can you run MUT again so I can see why it return yellow status?
          MS: Proceeded to insert USB.
Netbook: Slowly trying to install the USB driver.
MS: If I remember correctly, MUT will only show a final status. It does not tell you what is wrong with the PC.
MS: Unplugged USB half way through the driver install.
          Me: >-(

Me: Can I have a copy of MUT?
MS: No, copying from our USBs are impossible.
(USB model: Kanguru SS3™ with Physical Write Protect Switch, not capable of Encryption or Copy Prevention)
Me think: Prize for the biggest bullshit of the day.
MS: Maybe you can find a download on the net.
          Me: Googling… nothing.
MS: Then we got it through our internal network and I cannot give you a copy. The company will know if we make an extra copy.

I wonder if MUT is part of Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit.

        • @alvian: there is a win10 upgrade advisor, but it's not powershell. Might help identify any potential yellow status items for others here. Unfortunately, I already know win 10 works on mine.

  • Thought it sounds too good to miss so I tried anyway. Went in with a windows 7 pro laptop with an i5 4gb ram and they rejected the "challenge" saying the manufacturer of your HP laptop states your product does not support Win 10 on their website but they can still install it Win 10 upgrade for free but no guarantees it will work with all drivers as they have to wipe and do a clean install. However they say can something like they can make it back to original factory settings because of the recovery drive built it if it fail. So Total waste of time for me unfortunately as I was not prepared to take that risk.
Did anyone else like mine had succceded, one where their manufacturer laptop sites did not state Win 10 support OR is this a MS way of getting out of the deal? Any input guys, cheers.

    • I would think that HP would be fully supported, especially a relatively recent model like yours. If a vintage netbook can qualify, could the sales rep have a big influence in the equation?

      • Thats what I thought too, maybe my bad luck as they try to weasel out of it and I am no tech expert and I was not pushy enough.

        • Common consumer notebooks have very limited 'tech support' lifecycles. It is completely up to HP to spend money trying to develop, test and deploy new WHQL-certified drivers that are Win10 compatible, but doing this does not add value to their product.

So they don't do it. There's no point in spending any money trying to make a 'yesteryear model' consumer laptop suitable for Win 10, they just keep releasing new models every year and support those instead.

If it was a Probook or Elitebook, then they might consider releasing up-to-date drivers because the target market of Probooks are businesses / professional crowd who spend more money on PC hardware than the average person and have stronger demands for compatibility.

        • @scrimshaw: It is actually an Elitebook about 3 years+ old, used to cost some $1500 too so it was no cheapie as such, so bit disappointed with both HP and MS and still on Win 7 Pro but still runs well.

        • @shopaholic32:

Bad luck I guess, maybe HP isn't so great when it comes to driver development.

I was a bit surprised when Asrock released Win10 ready drivers for my old Sandy Bridge Z68 Pro3 motherboard, which was released end of 2011.

        • @scrimshaw: Thanks for the input mate in any case :). Goes without saying sometimes the big brands like HP are the ones which will actually screw you over, so you have to replace new hardware sooner I guess if the software is not deemed compatible with no new drivers releases.Cheers.

        • @shopaholic32: There's only a limited set of drivers they can include in that USB stick of theirs. The rest of the drivers for your laptop may be available if it connects online. Go buy a new SSD and upgrade your laptop to Win10 yourself before the deadline ends. You can always reinsert your old drive if the upgrade fails.

    • The yellow status strikes again. That's the excuse. If HP doesn't say it is compatible with W10, then it is not accepted into the challenge.

      • Yup, IMHO not the worth the risk to have the Laptop wiped and renistall everything possibly end up with missing driver, as you need to sign a disclaimer allowing them to do that if you proceed.
