Good discount from RRP, and I like Sony kit, although I for one would want a subwoofer. Although a few more dollars, and not as big a discount, for around the same budget I'd be more tempted by something like https://www.videopro.com.au/p-7517-panasonic-scbtt405gnk-3d-… as it has a subwoofer. Review here: http://www.trustedreviews.com/panasonic-sc-btt400-review. Actually, can get that for $266 at Appliances Online (https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/panasonic-sc-btt405gnk-3….

For a little more, I'd try to find an entry level Yamaha home theatre kit (eg was $319 way back when here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/200529) or if you have the budget one of the ones above that.

    • … or just buy one of the many 2nd-hand sets available on Gumtree. Usually around the $200-$300 mark, most are in VGC (if not perfect) and all are usually far higher quality than the above and even include a decent Sub!

For music, I much prefer floorstanding speakers over tiny tinny speakers and a sub. With the latter you tend to get muddy bass and lose a lot of mid range of sound.

I actually listen to more music than movies so I decided to get a decent hi-fi amp second hand (Pioneer) from the 90s for $50 and another $50 for a set of good Sony floorstanding speakers from the 90s also.

Much better quality stuff and for music is far superior listening experience.

    • Floor standers make a big difference, and for that reason I run 7 floor standers for my 9.2 setup.

      • Mine is similar, but that's still a movie theatre set up. Even concert blue-rays are 7.1 maximum.

      • I think 7 floor standing speakers is excessive, and you can get very nice audio from bookshelf speakers backed by subwoofers. The best sounding stereo I have ever heard is actually bookshelf speakers on stands backed by subs.

        • I was using full size bookshelf speakers, my current floor standing speakers are much better. Depends how you run your subwoofers, I filter them pretty aggressively to reserve only for the deepest of Bass, maybe around sub sub 50hz. Between 50-100hz I found only floor standing speakers can produce bass with enough precision.

    • Amazing the system you can build up for $100-$300 with 2nd-hand stuff from Gumtree! Nice work.

  • These floor standers have good reviews. There aren't many reviews though. I can't find any info about the rears or centre speaker.
No sub which is weird for a home theatre package.
Might suit a budget HT setup for a small apartment.

  • The centre speaker is 1-way 2 drivers, the fronts are 3-way 4 drivers, and the surrounds are 1-way 1 driver.
