Love the angry 1 star review just because no HDMI cabels were included…they probably bought Monster cabels

Would this be a passive sub?

    • I believe so. If it the same as the one I saw at Harvey Norman, it is passive. I could be wrong.

  • Can anyone find a proper review on this?

  • Wireless?

    • +3

Yes usually am/fm but not DAB.

      • This is the basic entry level Yamaha system. It doesn't support lossless audio decoding (DTS HD MA or Dolby True HD) from sources like Blu-ray, network or USB and only comes with FM radio. Lossy Dolby DTS 5.1 is the highest audio format this receiver supports.

        • That's true that it does not support Dolby True-HD OR DTS-MA, however it does support multichannel linear PCM which is a lossless format.
Most Blu-ray players can decode Dolby True-HD OR DTS-MA into multichannel linear PCM with no loss of quality.

        • @Blackrose: I have the Yamaha AVR from the harvey norman sale $195. It does Dolby Digital, and it will satisfy most peoples expectations and more.

        • @zealmax:
Yep it will decode lossy dolby digital and DTS used on DVD, but not the lossless dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA used on Blu-ray.
Blu-ray discs with lossless TrueHD or DTS-MA also contain a lossy DTS core, or embedded/separate dolby digital track for equipment that doesn't support TrueHD or DTS-MA.
However you can still get lossless audio from Blu-ray by setting the player to decode TrueHD or DTS-MA to linear PCM as above, if the player supports decoding.
I agree that this is very good for the price, certainly much better than the all in one DVD/Blu-ray systems for similar price or even more expensive ones.

  • Can these be wall mounted?

    • +1

      the speakers can be.

      • thank you :) just read a review and they have a keyhole mount!

        • You can put the bluetac away now.

  • If all speakers are wireless would be nice…

  • Have this system. It's pretty decent for the price. Needs to have sub on to get decent depth of sound. Audio is a bit hollow without them which is fine for fta tv. Otherwise decent system. Only issue I get is when played back mkv's I sometime get this hiss/static that occurs in the audio track. Have to either change audio input and back again or power cycle amp. Never happens with blurays, only mkv's. It's completely random and thankfully doesn't happen Very often. Can definitely do with an upgrade to speakers.

    • Hopefully after i install this system the sound quality they have would be better than my LED TV's speakers' one. :)

I just bought one and i haven't set up any thing like this before. The L, R, C and Sub should be fairly easy, but hOw do you place the 2 surround speakers? On the wall near the ceiling which using nails to hang them or with something else or on stands??

      • The surround speakers for 5.1 should be placed at the side, I prefer them slightly behind the seating position as shown in fig 1 in the link below.
Yes the speakers can be hung on the wall, you want them above ear level when seated but not to high, probably about 5&1/2 feet from the floor for those speakers

        • Thanks!!

        • I have ceiling speakers. Not so good for music. Just sounds unnatural having sound coming from above. For movies, you don't notice as much.

      • You can pickup a cheap pair of speaker mounts on eBay for about $10.

  • Just got one! Thanks guys.

  • Yeah I have this system and it is ok. Very good for the price though.

I do plan on upgrading it when I get around to it though. This was more of a stop gap solution while I find a better system but it is good enough I haven't really bothered looking.

Had the time to set this up recently and have been pretty happy with it. Using it in our main living room with the 2 surround speakers mounted on the ceiling. Had to buy another 5 or 6m of speaker cable to drop down the wall for one of the rear ones. Not as good as the "proper" system in our theatre room with the active sub but for 300 bucks this one works surprisingly good! Much better than the HTIB it replaced!
