Just a word of warning here, I am pretty sure that sliding on these is banned on the slopes at the recognised ski resorts. If you want to find a snowy hill somewhere off the beaten track go for it but if you try using something like this at Thredbo, Buller, Hotham, Falls Ck, Perisher etc I think you will be chased off the hill by the ski patrol.

Not to mention possible prosecution if you go head first like in the picture…

    • Why are they banned?

I think because you can't steer them. There's signs up at Mt Donna Buang saying that only toboggans are allowed, no inflatables.

        • How do you steer a toboggan?

@PainToad: Toboggans are also banned on the ski slopes. There are special closed areas set aside for toboggans. I normally go to Mt Buller this week in school holidays with the kids, havent gone this year. The lower beginner slopes are normally absolutely packed with all the kids on their 1st time to the snow holiday in a learners snowboard class. There are bodies everywhere. Many learner skiers and boarders are on the verge of crashing most of the time anyway, I am an experienced skier and I hate coming down those learner slopes as there are so many out of control beginners either sitting down right in the middle of the slope or crazily out of control hitting people. To have some daredevil on one of these things come barreling through out of control would be like a runaway mack truck ploughing through a kindergarten.

Given that the law probably holds the ski resort accountable to do all they can do to keep things safe for users, letting folks on these things plough through unsuspecting learners would probably open them up to being sued when somebody is inevitably wiped out and injured.

On the specific toboggan slopes they are normally reserved for little kids, toddlers etc and their parents takign photos. They are generally small hills with a gentle slope enough for som 3-4 year olds to get a bit of a rush from a slide on a toboggan then dad carries it back up the hill.

I have had a go in the US on a serious tube park where you pay and the ski resort makes a massive course where they cut a channel-like half pipe out of the snow and you ride tractor innr-tubes down it. Great fun but you do it in a closed park though a defined park. In the US and europe there are acres of hilly open spaces where you could pretty much do0 whatever you want, maybe even in your own property. Most of us here in OZ dont have a snowy backyard.

        • @2ndeffort: Thanks for some valuable info there.

        • @PainToad: You can lean. They have rails of sorts, so will go in a straight line and you can lean them to turn.

These sort of inflatables will just follow the slope.
