Sony HTDDWG700 800W Home Theatre - $323.40 @ Videopro.com.au

1000

Cheap home theatre system. Retails elsewhere for between $649 - $699

Absolute bargain price, as JB hifi has it for $487, and The Good Guys has it for $689. I tried to get JB to price match, doubted they would, and he said that the $323.40 price was over $100 less than their cost.

Also includes free shipping til 31st May

Pretty good review. IN summary, good value for money for those looking at entry level system. Perfect for me!

  • You got my vote. Thanks, just order one.

  • This is definitely a bargain for Australian consumers… but Americans would chuckle if they found out people were getting excited over this price !

    • +2

Yeah, it sucks to hear on the Amazon reviews how they got it for $200USD or less :(.

Anyway, just dropped some coin on this. First HTS ever.

      • Wow Australians are getting shafted. How long has this been happening?

        • +5

Since the invention of the internet.

          (And GST helps)

  • nice deal! For PC and PS3 use, would this be a better buy then the logitech z-5500? or which one is better? anyone know?

    • +1

I'd go the Z5500 for PC use. Its just way easier to setup and a Sony system would be overkill? I'm no expert in sound though..

      • Woah!! Really?

I never thought that a HT box would be crap for PC use. Really wanted a z5500, but the price never went down from day one. Its still at $400. And its not getting cheaper over time for some reason..

  • First post? Awesome deal! Unfortunately I've purchased 2 separate HTS already. Wished I waited for this deal.

  • Good price! And unlike some other cheap HT boxes, it has digital audio in - both coax and optical.
You can always get a better subwoofer later if you really want it. (How sub- can a 20cm driver be?)

Ah - I just noticed no DVD player included (a good thing!), so I guess the s/pdif is compulsory :-)

    • I don't know much about HT setups. Why is "no DVD player" a good thing?

      • Because most people would have their own DVD or PS3/BLu Ray players with better features then stock HTS players.

  • is this store trustworthy? never heard of them before

    • +1

      Absolutely legit.

    • +1

you've never heard of videopro? really?

  • Is this system worth $323?

I don't have a big TV yet so is it a good idea to grab this bargain while I can so when I do get a big TV (in a year or 2's time) I don't have to go out and pay through the nose for another system of similar quality?

    • +1

yeh i'm not sure if i wanna get this or z5500 >_<

u can get this for $430 lowest on si so it's 100$ cheaper than the cheapest place…

      • -1

Yes, which one is better? :O
I've heard Z5500s can't compare to a home theatre but everyone's buying them!

        • +1

I used to use z5500's for my HT until I bought an actual setup. They are excellent, especially the bass.

The only issue I had was the rear speakers can't really keep up with everything else when you start cranking the volume. I had them almost next to your head and it was tough to hear the rear-sounds.

  • Well i ordered one since I'm gonna get a projector soon (optoma hd20 from the states if possible) :D

  • How is this compared to the entry level Yamaha? Does it also have the same problem where HDMI only passes the video and not the sound?

    • I'm not sure how that is a problem. Your receiver is on, you want the receiver to play the sound, not your tv.

      • yeah exactly… this one doesn't play the sound via hdmi as confirmed by others on this page

        • Ahhhh yes ok. Didn't realise it wouldn't pull the sound from the HDMI. Strange.

    • I can confirm that it only has HDMI that does not pass the sound…

      • thanks!

  • Looks good however…

I followed the link on the sellers page to the user guide. Having a look I noticed a distinct lack of inputs on the rear panel. The user guide did not show any HDMI inputs however the picture on the web page shows some (I think).

The sony web page user guide shows HDMI on the rear

This may need to be clarified, there seeem to be a whole lot of empty realestate on the back !

otherwise thanks for the bargain alert

  • Ordered, thanks

  • Good for a basic ht, I would buy it if there were more connections.

  • ordered one thanks

    specs are here:

    http://www.sony.com.au/product/ht-ddwg700

    So 2 HDMI in ports and 1 HDMI out…plus 1 optical and 1 coax…

    tempted…but too broke!

    • So 2 HDMI in ports and 1 HDMI out…plus 1 optical and 1 coax…

But isn't the hdmi just for video switching? Its not used as an audio-in.
      You must use s/pdif instead.

      • I believe its this:

For example a PS3, you would connect the ps3 hdmi to the HT box hdmi in, then the HT box hdmi out to your TV hdmi in. That way, your TV displays the image AND the HT box outputs the sound. So you would need 2 hdmi cable per a device attachment in this case. Correct me if im wrong.

        • Only more expensive units do this (well, ones HTIB systems around the $800+ mark).

As freddy said, hdmi is just for video switching; you'll need to use optical to get the sound from the PS3 to the HT box.

Page 18 of the manual (linked by dirtybird: http://support.sony-asia.com.edgesuite.net/consumer/IM/32840…) shows that the HDMI is only used for video switching

        • My setup is like this, it includes ps3. I have PS3 connected by HDMI to my TV, Austar connected to my dvd recorder and TV, via RCA's(gay austar box isnt in HD), DVD recorder connected to TV, and XBOX 360 connected to TV via component cables. Then I just have an optical cable coming out of the TV to the receiver. This should work I hope. Still waiting on home theatre to come, hopefully Monday

also confirmed with video pro does have 2 hdmi inputs and 1 hdmi output.

    Maddie says:
Welcome to Videopro, how can I help you?
    paul says:
hi does the receiver as part of the Sony HTDDWG700 Home Theatre systen have HDMI inputs and outputs?
    Maddie says:
Yes, it does, 2 inputs an 1 output.
    paul says:
    thanks

  • +1

    thanx. just bought one.

  • The spec is just fine for my simple setup.
I got the PS3 and this will take up one hdmi in and the hdmi out to my Sony LCD.
I got one spare hdmi in for possible future upgrade.
My wii will connect directly to my composite on the TV. I may link it up to the system for added sound stage but that is not necessary.

    • this is the power of Ozbargain many retailers unaware of.

    • +1

      Haha.
I told her to hop on ozbargain.

    • Be sure to offer more bargains in the future for Ozbarginers Maddie!

  • I bought this a year or so back for i think around 600 bucks. Definitely a decent entry level system

  • -3

so HDMI 1.4 is coming out for 3D TV, leaving old HT systems defunct and worth less…

    • HDMI is backwards compatible.. So it really makes no difference. Besides, the low market penetration of 3D (and hence 1.4) makes it a nonissue for the vast majority.

  • Interesting!! But no $$$$$ :( :( :(

  • BTW Guys because of this HUGE outburst of the HTDDWG700’s our buyer has done this ridiculous deal on the on the Sony BDPS760 RRP $649 – CRAZY deal $297!
I’ve put the link if you wanted to take a look and feel free to jump on LiveChat if you have any Questions :)

    http://www.videopro.com.au/p-769-sony-bdps760-blu-ray-player…

    • $300 for a BD and it does not even play mkv files?
Not even DivX! Even the cheapest Sony DVD player does that.
Has wifi, but does not stream. BD live - ho hum. Gimme youtube, rstp and PnP please.

  • Can someone confirm the connections on the back for the speakers. Some Sony models had a special speaker connection rather than the more standard uniform connector from linking your speakers to it (if that made sense).

    • +1

Looking at the photos on the Sony website, they use the standard push-type speaker connectors. My older Sony has the annoying propreitary plugs on the back.

      • Thank you so much for answering that guys :)

  • +1

That is correct, they use the push-type speaker connectors :)

  • just ordered one about 2 hours ago..phoned to check if order went through and how long it would take to deliver… kind lady on the other side replied " there is a sudden surge of orders on this particular item and they would have to contact the supplier" asked how i found the company ..easy answer = ozbargain…she was surprised but happy ..hope they do not runout and redund your cash… looking forward to delivery..

  • +1

Almost got one but the Hdmi is soley for switching video not audio. Was going to run ps3 through it but you have to use the optical cable for sound.

  • ordered last nite so hopefully one of the first to get my order fulfilled

  • Thanks, just ordered. Understanding I probably won't be in the current stock shipment :)

  • Just got an update guys - looking at mid next week despatch for all new orders!!! :)

  • Unfortunatelly my wife doesn't let me spend any money on electronics ;) Really good deal, though!

  • Look like it is a very good replacement for my existing AIWA DVD Home theatre system which doesn't have HDMI input and not even optical input. So now I cannot connect it with my blu-ray player and HDTV.

    • Im running an old LG system with the same problem - no optical.

      Finally I can experience Blu-ray in 1080p and 5.1!

      • Receiver with HDMI inputs would be enough for me with my existing speakers.

        Any suggestions?

        • I looked at that - the reciever we found was around $300!

  • would be great for maser bedroom surround sound. +1

  • Is the system wireless with satellite speakers or hardwired?

    • For that price must be hardwired.

  • Which one is better, the HTDDWG700 or SAMSUNG's HT-C5500? I am thinking of buying a big TV with blue-ray player and home theatre system. Samsung got a deal of giving HT-C5500 as bonus for some of its TV products. But does it worth it? or better buy this HTDDWG700 with separate blue-ray player and seperate TV?

  • Doesn't support the HD audio formats, but for a starting home theatre system, this is a great deal! (and HD audio formats would probably be wasted on speakers of this size/quality anyways).

  • Is the difference between optical and HDMI for sound really that noticeable in terms of quality? Been after a HTS for a while but have been holding off because of a lot of receivers only support video switching; I guess I should note this would only be for a bedroom though. Seems like a great deal though.

    • +2

IMHO, not at all. HDMI will carry the new 7.1 and uncompressed audio used on some blu-ray disks.
I reckon its like 5-bladed disposable shavers.
Some people refuse to get and iPod or equivalent because they think the compressed audio sounds bad.

    • are you tim??

  • Bargain!! I just need a new satellite speaker system though, to go with my 2yr old 7.1 Onkyo Receiver. Wonder if this is still worth it just for the speakers and sub and put this Sony receiver with my old satellites in the master bedroom. Anyone?

  • anyone has any idea how long this deal will last?

  • Can I get two (or more) 5.1 audio signals into this and switch between them?

One from the optical and (at least) one from the HDMI (if these HDMI can pass 5.1)?

Hoping to hook a TiVo HD and a Mac mini (with optical audio output) up to this … and access 5.1 from both.

    Thanks,
    Ashley.

Hi All, amazing result yesterday, we have placed another bulk order to keep up with the orders, so the deal will last another few days at this stage! :)

    • Thanks Maddie! Ive no money till monday so hopefully i can get it then. Do you have a speaker only package on special by any chance?

  • I ordered two days ago. When am I expect the delivery?

  • +3

Researched this a bit more today and it doesn't really suit me. However the price really is a bargain and their customer support is 1st rate.

One thing to keep in mind Maddie is that once deals scroll past the first couple of pages you may find you get less and less "hits" and replies (just my 2 bobs worth)

Ozbargain is still the best though.. just ask the dudes from the logitech shop ..lol

    cheers

    Steven

  • Hi Sk1ppy - we sure do have speaker only packages, please see link below :
    http://www.videopro.com.au/p-1531-sony-savs350h-71ch-black-s…

Hi Donkeykong - we are despatching as soon as we receive our next order in (expected mid next week), so depending on your location, you should receive by end of next week. If you would like to log onto our on line chat, we can discuss further, and I will be able to look up your order, and tell you where it is in our system :)

Hi Steven - Thanks for the feedback! First introduced to Ozbargain yesterday via online chat with a customer (thanks "theguyrules) so appreciate your 2bobs worth! :)

Thanks for being professional and polite, much appreciated(often overlooked). My dad is looking forward to the set I bought him for his new TV.

    • No problem :)

  • Hurray, mine shipped out today.

  • Mine shipped too. Can't wait!!!

  • We are pleased to inform you that your order ### has shipped via TNT.

    G8!

  • I got a call from the local Videopro today saying it's out of stock, but they're expecting new stock next week, so I should get it by the end of next week. Nice!

  • New to HT systems, but could someone please provide me with some clarification on this particular model? I currently have a Ps3 running on a 46inch Sony Bravia. Would this set-up suffice for only casually watching movies and playing games? does the lack of digital support render the unit inferior compared with higher end models?

    • What lack of digital? Can't you run toslink 5.1 from the PS3 to this amplifier?

  • I wonder how this compares to the Panasonic 1000W HTS with built-in DVD player, selling for $396 at Myer (http://catalogues.myer.com.au/portal/offerdetails/panasonic_…)? For $73 more you get higher output power and DVD player. Not sure if other specifications are inferior to Sony's.

    • +3

Googled that, and saw the US list price was $199. We are really ripped off here.
BTW, that 1000W is at 10% THD!! (lots of distortion) Be careful comparing numbers.

      http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/shop/Audio/Ho…

      • As far as speakers compare which unit has the better ones do you think? Im primarily looking for a new set of satellites to replace my VERY old ones.

      • +2

The Sony HTDDWG700 speakers are also at 10% THD!

  • Will this work with the new 3D Bluray players running HDMI 1.4 ??

    • HDMI is backwards compatible, so yes.

  • Any lucky guy got your delivery? is it true there are hree hdmi ports (two in, one out) to the receiver

  • I received mine this afternoon. I am at work and have to wait till tonight to play with it.
