[EB Games] USD $20 Steam Credit for $27 (in-Store Only)

160

Note: This deal is not for everyone. For people who bank with Westpac and other similar banks that have horrible conversion rates and foreign transaction fees, it's cheaper to buy USD$20 Steam credit from EB Games (possibly other stores) for $27. After conversion and fees, I personally saved $4 by buying from EB. I'm only posting this deal because the Steam sale is here and want to help people save a few small $$$. You can only buy instore.

    Why not just apply for 28 degrees or a Citibank debit card where there's no currency conversion fees and the rate is a lot more reasonable?

      The reason I had the disclaimer at the top was to avoid questions like this.

      • I read that but what's stopping people from applying for one of the above?

          Age? Lack of employment?

        • @tessel: More like they need to meet a certain yearly income(you can still be employed, but if you don't meet this line you're not getting one). I once applied but got declined on the fact that I don't meet their minimum yearly income target. They never told me what this target was, even though I asked so I don't even know what this line is… Otherwise I'd be rocking a BankWest or 28 Degrees(or both even) right now and buying stuff overseas with zero worry about foreign exchange rate to AUD that will make me think twice before paying.

          As for the actual post, I remember these used to be $20 AUD as well(even the $50 ones they had for $50AUD, not $20AUD otherwise that would have been steal! haha), so you pay $20AUD and then you get $20USD in return, a one to one rate(though I am not sure what the exchange rate was at the time, it could have been a point where they did equal out and EB Games decided to just make it easier on us and just do it like this or something..or they never thought of the exchange rate at the time? Who knows). actually no, I remember now - I previously bought a game though them for like $20 or something, and paypal charged me $25 AUD so there was a significant difference at the time, so no they rate wasn't equal.

          Had I been smarter before - I could have purchased a bunch of these and then save them up for later uses so I don't have to worry about silly exchange rates….. Oh well….too late now and I can't travel back in time either….

          @Zachary:

          Get a citibank debt card. Its not a credit card so there is no minimum income and no annual/monthly fee.

        • @Coley: Does using that waive foreign exchange rate and any other related fees to purchasing overseas that are not in AUD?

        • +3

          @Zachary:

          Yes, you don't pay a foreign conversion fee. You also get very competitive exchange rates. I use it more for travelling as I can just withdraw money from an ATM at better rates then any cash exchange. A lot of people have both the 28 degrees and the citi debt. One for credit card purchases / hotels etc, and the the other for cash withdraws.

        • @Coley: Oh ok. Just did some googling around and it's in here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/cards_with_no_overseas_tra… and this is their website?

          Hm, kinda like ME Bank except they at least have a WA branch, which is only in the city….

          Cool thanks for this, I'll go apply for one and see how it goes. According to that Ozbargain link, it will a long process.

    • Easier still is the Pepaid Coles Reloadable Mastercard is $10, with no need to qualify, and an extended period of no international exchange fees.

    But this is the price everyday?

    • Nope. It's been at $29 for about a year now.

    this still will not make up for their overpriced hardware lol

  • There were a bargain when the they were $20….

    When I bought some Steam credit here (with AUD), it converted it to USD and was a few dollars less. I paid more at EB, then it got reduced again by Steam since my account is based in the US. I wasn't too fussed since I had bought it with spare change.

  • You can get them at coles and woolworths for $20

    • I didn't know Coles and Woolies sell these……I might have to check it out sometime then….

    • No you can't…I just walked into a Coles and Woolworths store just a few minutes ago and they had no idea what I was talking about! Maybe it's only in selected Coles and Woolies stores…? Because I googled around apparently there are some posts of people getting them from Coles and woolies…

      • Weird my local ones do. must be select ones, that sucks

  • Don't support EB

      Why not? Cause they're an expensive store that only have video game merchandise and doesn't have any other stock to sell that would compensate their loss by selling games cheap? Is that why?

      • +1

        Yes! 😜

  • +1

    Actually I think this is (marginally) cheaper than 28 degrees anyway.

    • +1

      Yep!

      On the 24th June (the last business day) that rate was 1.359434.

      $20 x 1.359434 = $27.19.

    • But you'd lose out by having to go in-store.
