Seems like an incredibly niche product - Appears to only apply to high end business consumer, as you could get the same specs for incredibly less. Or, get much more for the same price without a discount (Dell XPS 15 9550). Not sure the audience here will see the value.

I buy these laptops occasionally. Useful at the workplace and for travel.

XPS15 suffers in build quality and reliability.

      • So you would buy this over the XPS here ?

The dock is the only nice thing it has IMHO.

        • Upgrade the warranty to on-site for a little more (Can be done after purchase). You will love the X1 Carbon. I have had the X1 First Gen and the X1 3rd Gen. Very reliable, well built and nice to type on. Mil spec. The spec here is really solid.

        • Of course I would. The XPS15 is a prosumer laptop with a 4k screen that I don't need.

In large corporations, they go for Latitudes, elitebooks and T/P series lenovo because of the docking capabilities, MILSPEC rating, premium metal build, longer lasting components under the hood, encryption and 4G LTE capabilities.
It's all about the build quality and reliability.

        • yes, a dock is a must at work.

        • I may be biased here, I have a XPS 15 for work. Only build issue i've had since release is a sticky enter key, which was easily fixed. It takes me running around on the train and back so it definitely passes my quality build test personally.

I agree a dock is vital - but what makes a platform specific dock like this one different from a dynadock I can use with any USB 3 laptop? Proprietary and locked hardware like a dock is just silly to me in this scenario.

I use my laptop with a dock at work no problem, with more horse power at the same price. Honest questions here.

        • @cDNA:

You are forgetting the XPS is better in literally all categories? Dedicated graphics, double the ram, double the SSD, HQ processor, etc.

Working in a tech company with good relation to lenovo and the likes (we test and develop with their prelease hardware), there is not as big advantages these days going "business" built devices. It's mostly the deals these companies make with long term support and the likes.

      Sounds like a MacBook

The X1 Carbon lacks a dedicated graphics card. That's a MASSIVE difference to people who actually care about it. Most ultrabooks utilise the Intel HD integrated graphics. Some laptops will advertise a pretty weak dedicated graphics. The XPS has a 960M which blows everything else out of the water, bar the 970M and 980M, which appear in far chunkier gaming laptops.

      • +1

The X1 carbon is a business laptop for enterprise use mostly. Not a gaming laptop

        • Yeah, that was my point. Not sure why I got downvoted so much. I was trying to say that the difference between the XPS15 and this laptop is mostly the video card, which is pretty important. They're priced about the same, though. Perhaps the battery life on this is significantly better.

you are right - lenovos were (are?) traditionally purchased for the somewhat non-mainstream features like legendary build and support quality, trackpoint, docks etc. Sadly these have deteriorated considerably as of quite a while now. it was a marginal proposition back then, but even more so now.

(I am a former Lenovo fanboy)

      • +1

As i have commented further up, completely agree with this. Build quality is a lucky draw with all manufacturers these days and having experience with them, Lenovo devices are good but not what they use to be.

    • Its not a gaming laptop.

But its a good, rock solid business machine.

Its almost weightless in your carry on luggage. It can also withstand around 3 years of being dragged through regional airport security every 2 weeks, and dropped on the floor every 4. After this laptop I would likely break any other machine as I have learned how to treat a laptop incorrectly.

It does all that while somehow having the style of a black MacBook and an updated Thinkpad. Clit mouse and all.

I cannot recommend this enough, if I ever get rid of mine it will have been run over by a forklift or I will have gotten sick of DB9 - USB connectors and go for something like a Dell Rugged.

I have the G1, I do remember hearing some quality issues with the G2, so keep that in mind.

  • What one link dock?

  • +1

really not worth it for the price, much better specs available at a MUCH lower price

  • +2

I'm not entirely sure about this but I have found this on the Official Lenovo Website for cheaper

Same specs (except it's 1 yr depot)

    $2492.99 Delivered using code EOFY

Save $82 if you don't mind the 1yr depot

    Also

Get a free dock on Lenovo X1 carbon for Limited time / till stocks last

Mate, it's still cheaper on the website without it being free

$220 off an overpriced $2750 laptop when you have to call people and fill out online forms is not a bargain. You can get a Dell XPS 15 with similar/better specs for under $2000.

    • +2

Not saying this is a bargain, but X1 is a lot lighter than XPS: 1.78kg (XPS 15) vs 1.18kg (x1 Carbon)

Whoah, 5 steps and it's still not over? You would have to be an exceptional idiot to waste your time with this.

        We do deals often

Yes I can see them. More negs than pos votes, and multiple deals deleted including for sockpuppeting. Very reputable operation.

  • I would want something fancy for the spend, my experience with Lenovo commerical / corporate machines is a bit hit / miss.
How much is the Surface book? Thats a nice looking bit of kit.

    • Try Dell.

Surface book is good, but the battery life isn't quite up to par since it has a 3kx2k screen ('k' meaning x1000)
