Paul's Smarter White & Rev Milk - 3L $0.20 (7.5 Cents Per Litre), 2L $0.20 (10 Cents Per Litre) (Mountain Gate Woolworths VIC)

710

And I thought $0.50 a bottle was cheap. Any cheaper, and it'll be free!

Ignore the 'Reduced' sticker. The standard bar code at the back scans at $0.20 per bottle too. Same price for both 2L & 3L bottles. Use by 18 or 21 June, but they last usually 2 days on top of that, more if you freeze it.

Had to scan it at the check-outs to believe it!

milk that tastes like real milk?

  • Better be quick. Stock used by the 18th will be off show by morning at Woolies

    • That was what I thought. Till I saw the many bottles of REV expiring today (17 June) still on the shelf. Zoom in on the picture….

      • +1

WOW fresh food people actually going against their own waste policy. Better in our fridge than down the drain.

        • +5

Proper disposal of large quantities of milk is quite polluting and harmful to the environment. It needs to be properly disposed of according to Agriculture Australia

        • +1

@AnneFagit Living in the country and in a region that is dairy as well as other pursuits, that's really interesting. Thanks.

        • @AnneFagit: Uh….I was just thinking of pouring it down the drain if it spoilt before I can finish my bottle!

But that article is an interesting read. Didn't know milk in rivers can kill fish…..

        • @AnneFagit:

This is likely aimed at disposing thousands of litres of non homogenised milk but good advice none the less.

        • @Boodek:

Where abouts on the Murray? PM if you like

        • +1

@AnneFagit: thanks for linking to that article, never knew how toxic milk was in waterways.

        • +2

          @TightBottom:
This can occur regardless of the type of milk. The issue stems from the amount of oxygen the bacteria that breaks down the milk requires. Large quantities can effectively suffocate aquatic life is by using up all their oxygen.

I've seen almost 100L of expired milk poured down the drain at a popular fast food outlet. Not sure how environmentally friendly that was (considering business sewerage treatment).

        • +2

Don't see why it would be a problem to put milk to the sewer in urban areas, considering how diluted it will become, and that it will be treated.

        • @AnneFagit: Next time you see this you should report it to the local water authority. Some have a trade waste team to assist with issues such as this.

The environment needs as much help as it can get at the moment with this rotten/backwards Liberal government in charge.

Great to make some cheese from. Ricotta is the easiest.

    • +1

      Receipe?

      • +1

Being milk up to near simmer, just below boil. Add an acidic. Lemon or lime juice or vinegar. Add slow and stir a couple of times. Watch it come together. Add more acidic until the liquid is fairly clear. Strain off the solids and drain them In a fine colander or one lined in cloth. The longer you allow it to drain off the more solid your ricotta. There are plenty of recipes online. Some even recommend using a proportion of sour milk with fresh. Apparently mascarpone is very easy as well. You can make labne cheese out if plain yoghurt very easily as well.

don't forget to ask for a raincheck if sold out :)

    • +1

I'd buy all the stock (for the freezer) and then 4000 rainchecks.

      • Which you have to drink in 30 days….. ;)

If only rainchecks could last a year!

Too bad our milk industry is mostly owned by the French and Japs, though it's always most oftenly presented as Australian owned. Seems like the trend on everything here though, we're a nation of sellouts at the top and while the bottom are still brainwashed to that fact.

A good watch if you want to know the back back story of the milk industry in Australia.

Yes the Lib/Nats do like to pretend that they're helping Battling Aussie Farmers when most farming is carried out by big business. Usually not even Australian big business.

And you know that they ain't payin tax either.

Just how Lib/Nats and Labour and possibly the Greens arranged it to satisfy the tiny number of billionaires that decide how policy is written in Australia.

So much worse than the good ol' US of A here.

      • +4

It surprise me how many Australian doesn't know a thing or two about their geopolitical, business and so on. You are spot on there … sadly

        • +4

It's because the information isn't so accessible to the masses and are glazed over by the mainstream media. It's a matter time we have independent media sources - even so they're probably going to be shut down before it gets big due to litigious dirty hand tactics.

Same story and tactics all over the world. We're all being played.

Same here. I have heard about Fountain Gate but Mountain gate!!!

  • +1

I work near there, and they like to sell items that are expired

    • Discounted? Any tips on which day/time to check out the store for discounted items? Also i heard people come in for some kind of $4 bag of ugly looking fruit n veg that would usually get thrown out or something but is perfectly fine to eat?

    • interesting, its better with a customer than in the bin. Although head office will go down on them like a tonne of bricks once they find out.

    • I'm there on and off, and have seen them put things out on clearance. They may be near expiry, not they weren't expired. It's just like any other woollies.

Have you personally seen them sell stuff that is past expiry date?

    2017 - milk goes free!
2021 - you get paid to drink milk free milk!

    • Can't wait for 2021!

  • +19

This is what happens when the media causes the masses to buy branded milk for a couple weeks, the hysteria dies down and the masses go back to buying generic milk, causing massive oversupply of the branded milk after a couple weeks of strong sales.

    • +1

Also explains why our local woolworths had no generic milk left on shelves Tues night.

  • I remember the days before they introduced the electronic stickers, I used to go early each morning and tell the guy that would price the reduced stock to give me the 3 liters for 20cents…good times haha

Maybe I try milk bath :)

    • -6

That's essentially condemning a calf to slaughter so you can bathe in the milk his mother made for him to feed off. Does that really deserve a smiley?

      • +5

His? maybe it's a transgender calf and you're condemning it to a life of confusion by labelling it a male with your sexist comment.

        • -3

Yeah, apart from gender (as we
know it) being a human construct, I'd imagine any calf would prefer to be mislabelled rather than have a hammer blow to the head or their throat slit just so you can take their mum's milk. Wouldn't you agree?

      • No that's your wild imagination and a kneejerk reaction to something meant in jest.

        • -1

kneejerk reaction to something meant in jest

          So was this :)

      • The milk is on clearance, so if the choice is down the drain… or giving @wjb smooth supple skin then down the drain :)… I'd vote for the latter. (With a smiley face…)

  • +7

Pro tip - milk will last a few extra days after its expiry date as the date is set very conservatively. Thing is you should ALWAYS keep it in the fridge and return it immediately after use.

When checking if it has gone bad do not smell the bottle opening as there is usually dried milk left on the rim that would produce off smells so pour some milk in a glass and smell it to find out if it is OK to use.

    • +3

milk starts to rot the minute its exposed to air. I've had milk with 10 days to go expiry go bad after 5days of opening. Close-to expiry milk just rots quicker when it is exposed to air. Still if I had young ones (kids) I wouldn't take the chance.

    • +1

I only use milk for coffee and I go on smell - which means I drink waaay past the use-by date. Bear in mind it's not left out of the fridge ever other than 1 coffee a day (well up until I quit coffee a few weeks ago).

      • it goes off quicker once you open it as bacteria from the air enter the bottle. I've had milk go off before it's best by date and after it's best by date depending when it was opened. Same with cream, yoghurt, etc.

  • -5

You all should be ashamed of yourself. Poor cows suffer for this milk, go vegan

    • +1

      Mooooooooove on

    • Your comment is oppressing me.

  • Great for supporting farmers in this hard time

    • +4

Do you mean the multi-national, non-Australian businesses that supply milk or are you talking about the fairy tale Aussie Battling Farmer Doin' It Tough that politicans use to explain the massive subsidies to this industry that employs almost no one at all?

    • +3

I think the issue is with the wholesalers not farmers and supermarkets, and how much they they pat the farmers …… not sure if fonterra, devondale, etc say to the farmer"your milk is for supermarket brand so we pay less and your milk is for branded so we pay more ……. same processing different labels…… just more profit for the wholesalers.

Hey, give the wholesalers a tax cut , jobs and growth …… or straight profit to shareholders.

Supply chains and margins are always interesting to see who makes the most.

  • Sorry folks- just popped by again just now and Ozbargain has once again lived up to its name.

    It's all cleaned out!

      • Nah….the labels were gone, shelves were empty.

Besides, I wasn't going to push my luck haha. Am just happy to have some cheap milk for a couple of days! 😆
