Best Credit Card Offers atm

Hey guys, looking to get a new credit card as I've cancelled my old one to dodge the upcoming annual fee. Had a westpac altitude one where I got 40k ff points on signup. Wondering what the best offer at the moment is on with a card with cashback or FF points with an income around 60k. I pay full balance off every month so rates or anything like that don't concern me too much although 55 day interest free on purchases would be nice.

Cheers

Check some of the credit card deals posted here?

  • Had a look there and most of them were expired or had income requirement of 70k.

  • if you want balance transfer.
    this is pretty good

      OzBargainers don't pay fees.

Free Amex is always good. :)

The popular ones are Qantas Discovery (I've got this one), Velocity Escape and Essentials. All qualify for the Amex deals you see often on OzB.

    Amex referral links: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals

You and your referrer get bonus points etc etc.

Coles No Annual Fee card gets you some flybuys points, but because there is no annual fee, the earn rate is probably a lot lower.

If you are after a card for day-to-day use with a decent rewards program, yet fee-free, can't go past the Amex Essential. Best among the AMEX cards, if you are not redeeming flights, but after cash-equivalent rewards - gives the highest rate, and most flexibility for rewards (see my analysis in recent comment).

Also good for balance transfer - 0% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 12 months, and it has no establishment fee (unlike a few others).

Thanks for the response, only problem is those are amex cards only where I need a card where I get amex + mastercard as a lot of places don't take amex or have some fee ontop.

      Cheers

      • A fair point, if you don't have other visa/mastercards. I fallback on cards like 28 degrees mastercard where Amex is not accepted or has surcharges.

        • I think 28 Degrees (and bankwest Zero platinum) have income requirements above what OP is looking for (based on this)

        • Clinton mentioned cards listed have income requirement of 70k and over. Might be the case with Bankwest Zero Platinum, but I doubt it is the case with 28 Degrees. Pretty sure it is much more modest than that, unless things have changed a lot since Latitude Finance took over from GE. Which is why they don't even list a minimum income requirement (wasn't able to find one).

However, there were accounts of declined applications when the person already had credit from numerous other cards. If this were not the case, probably worth applying, if nothing else, for the "no currency conversion" and "no international fee features". Seems to be the favoured credit card for travel by OzB members too.

  • In a similar boat to you OP and I run the Amex platinum edge card and the Coles no annual fee mastercard.

The Amex card is great, 3 points per dollar spent at supermarkets, 2 points per dollar for fuel, 1 point per dollar for retail and .5 per dollar for bills. There are great ways to maximize the points like buying fuel cards in the supermarket or other stores like Masters etc so you gain 3 points per dollar spent. You can also add the amex card to paypal so most your internet shopping will reward points. You've probably seen on Ozbargain that there are many Amex credits they offer for spends at certain stores. It has $195 annual fee that includes a free return flight from select destinations. If you can't use this then you can on sell it to someone else quite easily and make a profit as return flights from Perth to the east coast are worth more than the annual fee. Mod: Referral solicitation removed.

Now there is nothing too flash about the Coles no fee MC but I took up the deal they had for a $100 coles voucher with sign up. But I use this card when ever I can't use the Amex or there is a fee to the Amex on purchase. It nets 1 fly by point per $2 spent anywhere which in monetary terms is bugger all but it's still good to be claiming some points for a free card and does add up.

    • Just wondering can you pay a bill of your mastercard for example with the amex to get points. And also just thinking with that fuel card idea wouldn't that be classed as a cash advance like buying a gift card with a credit card and cost you?

      Cheers

      • Your question is a generic one, not related to a particular card. Generally you can't pay a credit card with a credit card. Even if you can, it will be considered cash advance.

No, the fuel idea is not classed as a cash advance. You are essentially buying a fuel gift card, or say the Wish gift card which allows you to fill up on fuel. This gives you the points for purchases.

        • Yeah but buying a regular gift card i get charged as a cash advance so don't see why a fuel one is different?

        • @Clinton: I am not sure why you got charged as cash advance. Every single time I buy a gift card, and paid by credit card, it is just a normal purchase. I get points and everything. Whether on its own, or lump together with other supermarket items. The credit card company does not know the breakdown of the items in the transaction anyway. If you are worried, give it a go with a small giftcard amount, and throw in one or two supermarket items.

But if you are filling up at Woolworths/Caltex, you are better off to buy the Wish e-giftcard at a discount. Usually 5% at Cashrewards and motor associations (RACV etc), but deals often come around, sometimes up to 10%.

          Here are a sample:

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/252902

Once again, they are always treated as purchases, and not cash advance.
          Hope this helps.
