Part of Lenovo's End of Financial Year sale. Big desktop-replacement that should probably be plugged into the wall most of the time (as it only has 3cell battery). Otherwise you get $900 off this:

  • Intel Core i7-6700HQ
  • Windows 10 Home 64
  • 17.3" FHD IPS
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • 128GB M.2 SSD + 1TB 5400RPM HDD
  • GeForce 940M 2GB
  • Intel Wireless AC 3165
  • 2.7kg

$1,299 delivered with 1 year warranty. Likely not suitable for any serious gaming with GeForce 940M (maybe Kong Computers can give us one more EoFY gaming lappy deal). Only has one HDMI out for external monitor.

If you want a cheap(ish) gaming machine, try this; http://www.kongcomputers.com/product-detail/gamers/metabox-a…
If you want a 17" gaming machine, try this; http://www.cfonline.com.au/index.php?route=product/product&p…
Check dell outlet for an Alienware refurb (what I have)

    • …. both 15" screens

      • Hm… Was looking at a 17, i'll see if I had another link. Thanks.

      • That said - both considerably better gaming machines. The 940M is not a gaming card, not at 1080p, not even very good at 720p. The 960M will get about triple the frame rate in most modern games.

If you're after a big screen but not going to game, certainly not at 1080p, then OPs notebook is good. But don't buy it as a gaming notebook.

        • Having recently purchased the Skylake Asus UX303UB with 940M I agree with your analysis.

However, if you're prepared to tweak it a bit, you can get fairly playable gameplay at 720p for some modern games.

I've tried it on The Witness and Bioshock Infinite and both are pretty good, not sure of the exact framerates, but it's pretty smooth on medium settings.

That said I have overclocked it as the guy has done in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpkIaE4MEiY

As fair as the above laptop being a good deal, I'm not sure. I would get the Dell 7559 over this.

    • I'd be going for an Inspiron 7559 and add a SSD if required rather than Alienware if I went the Dell route, that is very good value for money.

Thing even looks better to me although I'm not a fan of flashy lights and flouro colours etc.

      • Neither, the more recent Alienware are not too bad, you can disable all the lights other than the power button (alien head above keyboard). To get white backlit keyboard, i had to get a little fancy, you normally pick from a colour wheel which is only a strong colour (no white). Very good machine for the refurb price.

the link above is all I had, no 17 options. apologies for the bum-steer.

    • Thanks for those links they are actually pretty good deals hows your experience with refurbished laptops? Anyone know if kong is gonna do an EOFY deal soon?

    cash rewards? :-)

  • This looks great! but i am still waiting for my refund from a sportsgear purchase.. anyone know how long paypal refunds take? it was deposited from my bank and they said it refunded on monday. I would definitely upgrade the SDD card with a 500gb as the main and the ssd that comes with it as secondary.

Take note that the SSD is using an M.2 interface so you will require an M.2 SSD and you will not be able to use it in the same port as the HDD as far as I'm aware.

Big portable laptop or mini desktop. Good replacement for tower desktop.

    • Good replacement for tower desktop.

      No it isn't because it's a laptop.

      • Yes it is depending on what you want. If you're concerned about power usage, this laptop is many times more efficient than any tower. If you want desktop performance but able to easily transport it this is a better replacement.

  • Current but below average GPU, not much for gaming.

    • It's not marketed as a lappy for gaming. Get alienware if thats what u r after.

      • Its for multi-media apparently, apart from playing back media (which can be done by the CPU's onboard graphics).
I'm not sure what the use of a low end GPU is on machines like this other than using more battery.

        • Well there is a huge number of older games that can be played.

        • @Diji1: I don't know enough about the CPU/GPU listed, but Integrated graphics can do a surprisingly good job at older games. I'm currently playing Fallout 3 on a Macbook air i5 with integrated graphics. The thing runs rollercoaster tycoon 3 as well with no problems.

Emulation all the way up to Nintendo Wii works great too, but emulation mainly relies on the CPU over the GPU.

          Just my anecdotal experiences.

        • Perhaps run photoshop and premier faster

    • Yeah, the GPU makes it a near-miss.

17" and they still can't fit a full size zero key in the numpad? Useless as a desktop replacement if you do number crunching.

    • Are you sure? Looks full size in the photos.

Here's IdeaPad 700's keyboard. I guess what worldwidehappiness wants is the double-width 0 key on the keypad, where it sits below both 1 & 2.

        • +1

Yes. Keyboard layout is important for Word and Excel and some other programs. Touch-typists need a large zero key in the numpad for the thumb. I hit that zero key about 200 times per day, and can't afford a mistake. But it's fine if you are not a touch typist. Same problem with companies merging page up/down and home/end into the arrow keys. Useless for fast word processing - ruins all the shortcuts. Dell Inspirons have the perfect keyboard layout. Hope they never change it.

        • @worldwidehappiness: I understand your need and glad that you can find Dell to suit that, but asking the manufacturer to accommodate such a limited users is a tough ask in my opinion. The design is just fine for 99% of users, why would they change it?

        • @hanofee: There's a general dumbing down trend happening in computers. So it would be noble to optimise keyboards for the evolution of humankind, rather than submitting to cost-cutting that saves like 1 cent per computer. Or maybe they could do it for ethical reasons - spending an extra 1 cent to accommodate minorities like Word and Excel power users.

  • Why no ThinkPad T or X series bargains :(

  • 2 HDDs? No thanks.

  • So not really having looked at laptops for a while, is this a good spec for the price or just average? Is there anything else people would recommend? We need to replace a general duty laptop for browsing, documents, slides, email, videos which the 17" screen is a bonus. Don't want a desktop as it mostly gets used on the kitchen table so size/weight is not a big issue. Reliability and value are top priorities. If given a choice, I'd take a HP EliteBook but at 2.5x the price for a similar spec, I'm happy with to try Lenovo (despite other reviews about poor service).

  • Does anyone know if I could replace the 5400rpm HDD with a SATA3 SSD? Would that void the warranty?

    • Replace the 1TB drive with ssd. Sure you can. Just make sure it complies with the right thickness.

      Will it void warranty? No.

Keep the 1TB drive in case you need claim warranty to get the lappy fixed.

      • Awesome thanks!
