        • Great recommendation renegade - Beelink Mini MX III just arrived. Awesome. +100

    • Do you know of a similarly specced TV box eg. S905 based with an on/off button?
      Thanks for link

    • Does the Beelink come preloaded with Kodi or Openelec? If so, which version?
How well would it play x265 encoded 1080p content via Kodi?

      • Comes with Kodi 15.2, but does not matter, just upgrade it to 16.1 from Play Store. It has fully working Play store. x265 1080p is fine, but not 4K x265 via Kodi.

    • Ok going to give this one a go, Gbit eth is what makes the deal for me. It will be interesting to see whether it's true 1Gbit or just something hooked up to a USB bus. Regardless it should be better than 100Mbit.

    • Thanks, bought a beelink.

If anyone needs a power adapter to go with it. These are great, bought about 10 of these so far and never had any issues with them. $1.29 shipped from HK.
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261479960630

    • How do you get it down to that price on everbuying, it's ~60 and after applying the intro coupon code it jumps to $70+. So the 10% off is like 20% more?

    • How did you get $34.97 via eBay? I clicked on your link and it came up with approximately AUD$60.

      • See history of item, the price has increased now :(

        • And it was USD anyway so not too much of a hike.

  • does it passthrough Atmos and DTS-X in Kodi?

    • +1

      LOL No its a $30 box :P
None of the RK3329 or S905 boxes will do DTS pass through

Get the Xiaomi TV Box Enhanced 3 version to get all these goodies.

      http://www.gearbest.com/tv-box-mini-pc/pp_333724.html

      • I would have thought passthrough would be easy. It's literally no decoding, by definition. Sure, I wouldn't expect a $30 box to decode atmos. But surely it could just flick the signal out as-is for your amp to decode?

      • It says Chinese language only :-(
I am after a box which can do HD downloaded movies (so preferably 1Gbps NIC) without Plex - just from windows share. And Netflix HD.
Fast and reliable and TV-like remote. I would be happy to pay up to let's say $150, but cannot find box like that :-(

        • +1

Nvidia Shield is your answer, it can do everything that you asked for + 1000 more things. It was around US $150 few months back

        • @regenade: shield is doing atmos, DTS MA and True HD via kodi now?

    • Amazon Fire TV (2nd Generation) has support for Dolby ATMOS and has an English Interface.

  • I'm interested, but does android still have the following issues please?

    • 5.1 DTS audio output via optical? (ie: media box is connected to my TV, but no audio sent over HDMI I want the audio to go to the optical so my AVR can decode it)

    • Dynamic Refresh Rate Switching - ie: 720p24 and 1080p24 AUTOMATIC video playback support (last I looked only 720p50 / 1080p50 and 720p60 / 1080p60 were AUTOMATICALLY supported when matching the source video playback fps).

    thank you.

    • My Tronsmart MX III has optical out.

      • can it send DTS 5.1 audio over optical and video to HDMI under KODI please?

        • +1

          Yes sure can.

  • Could anyone please help me to justify the reason for me to buy this if I have a full smart 4k TV, and a Chromecast?

    • +1

If you want to run Android apps on your TV i.e. Kodi, games, etc.

OR you just want a new toy to play with.

I think both are equally valid :p

That said, if you're only streaming media and you're happy using your phone to control it, the Chromecast is plenty.

    • +1

For Kodi alone. Some apps and sites block Chromecast too. I stream sports through Kodi for example.

      • +1

he already has a smart TV, he should be able to load games and KODI on that.

    • KODI

  • Could it be a mistake but RK3229 supports hdmi 2.0 stated on many websites but this R Box only supports hdmi 1.4. So weird.

  • does it support DTS-HD MA TrueHD 7 1 Atmos-RARBG??
my old player doesn't support it
    it's time to upgrade

  • Rockchip support sucks balls decoding wise. You are buying a dud. If you want a TV box buy an Amlogic S905 or the upcoming S905 revisions. Allwinner and Rockchip SOCs are duds. They are closed up tight and there is very little support for them in Kodi. WiFi sucks on all of these too. Look up CNX Software reviews. I would only recommend an MXQ Pro:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MXQ-Pro-Amlogic-S905-Android-5-1-…

These boxes are not for Netflix either, they have no DRM and some come pre-rooted. This is a direct replacement for a WD Media player for offline media playback off a USB at best. Amlogic S805 or KitKat are obsolete too. And no they don't support 10.1 DTS Jiggly everything, you want fancy audio support buy a Shield. 2GB of RAM isn't required for media playback.

  • Anyone know if the Logitech Harmony remotes will work with this. The main issue I see with these things is no dedicated remote control. Using a phone to control it just plain sucks.

    • +1

A remote is included. Logitech K400R is a good choice too.

    • +1

I use K400r with my android box and it's great.

    • I'm happy with my Tronsmart air mouse

  • Wouldn't mind getting something like this to replace my old HTPC. However I have a PlayTV device plugged in my current HTPC which uses MediaPortal so I can watch FTA TV through Kodi. Not sure how I'd get that working on an Android box like this.

    • there are android boxes with DVB-T tuners built in.

  • It has an IR remote supplied with the box

  • anyone know of something similar with a tv tuner??? tuner has just died on my pana plasma and I'm too in love with it to ditch it and revert to my viera LCD rubbish panel.

    • Has your tuner fully died or just refusing to decode certain channels?

I've a panasonic plasma too, and I've found some channels now state 'invalid video format' when I switch to them. Looks like GO! and a couple of the newer channels. I think they might be encoding in H.265.

Didn't think the networks would obsolete peoples TV's through changing encoding.

  • Great one, But anyone know an actual Android TV box but cheap one, I mean like "nvidia shield" thanks

    • +3

I hear this is a cheap android TV box: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/251781

      • This is the real android TV im talking about https://www.android.com/intl/en_au/tv/

whats in these boxes is just a phone/tablet copy

        • I think the problem is there's a bunch of certification involved from Google that probably costs money, so no one is willing to build a "cheap one". You're probably best off saving up and getting the nvidia shield. From everything I've read it's the best out there, and not really that expensive.

        • @salem: Its expensive, I'd rather buy an Xbox with a bit extra money.

        • @et3rnal: Lol but its not an Android TV , Shield can do 1000s stuff which the even the PS4, PS5 or Xbox Two or three wont be able to do.

        • @regenade: Really? I know its not! all I want is to have a proper smart tv so I dont need to hock my PC to TV, at the end android is a crap resources sucker, but this whats cheap out there. Xbox with windows 10 apps can do far many "TV" related things + its gaming capabilities, I see no comparison in here.

Thanks you for the raspberry pi link its awesome, will try it out.

  • Hmm so wait another couple of years for Nvidia shield tv to reach this price? lol

  • I ordered it for my father's birthday present who watches a lot of TV, I decided on this rather than Beelink because it does not come with a remote control. I hope it works works with the Kogan tv because for his Christmas present I bought a $150 blueray player and it did not work with the tv so it is in the spare tv room now.

    • The Beelink comes with a remote as well. All these TV Boxes come with an IR remote anyway.

  • how much setup is required to configure kodi into being able to stream movies and tv shows? I am kinda tempted to buy one to send back home.

  • I just visited their website, it looks a bit dodgy :) Basically says watch all movies for free.

"Pay to watch a movie? NO WAY!" "Watch any movie from your living room without any costs. Even if the movie is still in the theater. No longer the need for DVD's or DVR's."

      Not the same product/brand.

Completely different product according to this and this

It's just someone reselling generic TV boxes with apps, torrents etc already loaded.

  • Do these units support controllers. Eg snes usb ones?

  • Hi, I have received my R-Box but I can't get it set up on my Logitech Harmony remote, has anybody else tried to set up using harmony remote?

    • Wow that was quick, when was your order date and what type of shipping? I am planning on using the supplied remote when it arrives, I would like to get your opinion/review on the r-box because currently there are none out there.

      • +1

Hey, I use TNT option for delivery to Sydney Metro, shipping was only 3 days after dispatch.

First impressions are ok, the box comes complete with Kodi and the basic Addons for TV and Movies, Velocity etc. I install a custom build using Nemesis from KodiUKTV. The build is really nice and clean with so many addons but the interface is clunky and slow, only spend a few hours on it could be better once everything installs. My Raspberry Pi first gen running the latest Kodi is a smoother interface. The box is decent quality with loads of connection options with 3 USBs (2.0 only though) and Micro SD, can also add a network connection via Kodi. Comes with AU plug and HDMI cable. The remote is basic and feels cheap, hence would love to get it working with my Logitech Harmony.

Will update once I get it all set up.

        • Thanks, pitty that the performance you mentioned with the menus is not very good, I have heard the processor could be under powered, if it can play videos well it is not really too much of a problem. I checked my tracking number and it is still pre advised :/

  • I have to say I am not impressed with Geekbuying shipping, just got an update on my shipping tracker, just now gone from "pre-advised" to "The item is at the PostNL sorting center". 16 days since ordering, it finally has been handed over to the shipping company.

    • Free shipping can take up to 30 business days. It's taken that long for it to reach PostNL's sorting centre where it gets forwarded to Australia.

  • @OP, do you know if this unit supports HFS+ formatted (Mac) hard drives?

    • Native Android won't support NTFS/HFS+ HOWEVER this app does it.

Edit: Actually that requires root access. I'll see if this box has root.

      • So is the unit rooted to support this app, and would the unit then play mkv files from these drives?

        Thanks!

        • +1

          Yes the device is rooted.

This might be a bit of a problem though due to the app.

Note! Android changed its security policy in versions 5.0 and higher. If your device is based on these version, in order to read files, you first need to copy them from the external storage to the internal device memory or a memory card via any root-privileged file manager. After that you will be able to read the files.

        • Ok, might be easier to migrate data and reformat to ntfs.

          Thanks for the info.
