Webcity - Free 10GB Online Storage

Webcity Announces FREE Online Storage Solution

Webcity is proud to announce an exciting new development in online storage. 10GB of storage space on our Australian based, high speed servers, completely free.

With no limit on the size or types of files stored and the ability to connect directly via FTP or as a shared network drive, the service will be suitable for a vast number of personal or business uses.

The product stands out from other free storage providers due to its lack of restriction on files types, file sizes, the very large amount of allocated storage space and the fact it is based in Australia, providing a much faster link than overseas based services.

To activate your account, all you need is an active email address. More details can be found at: www.webcity.com.au/online-storage

Note: I've read the T&C's and they will allow themselves to send you their newsletter as part of the terms of service, BUT - I just got one of these and it had an unsubscribe button, so in theory you'll only have to suffer one e-mail from them in return for 10GB free online storage.

They also reserve the right to review this year-to-year, so I wouldn't make any long term plans just in case.

  • Very cool, might give it a look at :)

  • Thanks, just created an account. Not sure after one year they will stop the 'free' offer but until then, can use it to share stuff with other.

  • can we store website , can it support PHP? or it only a space for you to store your own files?

    • Seems not. The server doesn't accept http requests, only ftp, sftp and samba.

  • Can't seem to connect atm (I could few minutes ago).
Perhaps their server can't handle the requests?

  • thanks! - if its possible to link this up to a domain that would be even better!

  • one word. SKYDRIVE (25g)

    • Can Skydrive be accessed with OSX/Linux?

    • most free online storge such as SKYDRIVE, rapidshare don't support FTP, and difficult to use, slow.

      • Skydrive isn't difficult to use but I think it has an upload limit of 50 MB per file.

  • +2

You can map this 10G space into your PC's My Computer, so just copy and paste files, just like access HDD in your local computer, you can directly edit or play files. Thanks Webcity!

Tools -> Map Network Drive, enter \storage01.webcity.com.au\storage

    • Doesn't seem to work for me. It seems to try to connect but fails. :\

      • should be two backward slash \ \storage01.webcity.com.au\storage

  • extremely slow..

  • first impression? Two thumbs down!

    • Isn't it working for you, or is it just slow? What kind of connection are you using?

  • Shall check it out…

  • can connect via FTP but can't mapping net work drive, speed is fast, max out ADSL2+ upload speed

  • Works really well. I just signed up and uploading a file to test. It's currently maxing out my upload bandwidth of ADSL2, so no issues with speed.

    Nice post!

    • Still good for me. Just tried uploading and downloading a file from the server. No issues. I must be lucky!

    • This shows how good this service really is.. haha

    • As mentioned before, this server does not accept http requests, therefore that site's report is invalid. Working fine on ftp://

  • This is annoying. But can it still be used for file sharing?

"The online storage service is NOT intended to be used as a file sharing system, it is for storgae and backup puposes only."

    • It probably has bandwidth restriction and requires authentication, hence not suitable for file sharing.

  • Nice find was looking for an online backup for backup my photos.

  • Has anyone been able to map it to your local drive?
    I cant …

    • Yep, no issues here. Maybe a setting with your firewall or Anti-virus.
Disable your security, then retest. If that works, then you know you'll have to create an exception..

    • Works for me.

Add network drive > ftp://storage01.webcity.com.au > enter username > connect > enter password > done

could not connect at all to this. it seems like a scam

    • +1

Well I wouldn't go so far as to call it a scam just because you're having difficulties connecting! Maybe post some details about your setup, and what you've tried so that others can help?

  • A simple and free backup program to utilise with this service via FTP is SyncBack Freeware currently at version V3.2.20.0. Tutorial/E-Books for the program can be found here.

When setting up a backup profile just click on the 'Expert' button at the bottom to gain access to FTP settings :-)

Has anybody got any other free/open source backup program suggestions that support FTP?

  • Not exactly lightning fast, but the price is right.
