Great prices…….Remember Cathay also allow Open Jaw bookings with their sale fares at no extra cost. For example, fly into Beijing and fly out of Shanghai (and have a stop over in HK if needed).

Or even Fly into Beijing and fly out of Tokyo. Of course you need to get to the alternate departure point, but beats backtracking to the original arrival port.

Use the "Multi-city / stopover" option on the Cathay website.

    • Open jaw bookings offered very attractive, especially if you plan on going to japan.. fly in NRT out KIK.
      great deal!

  • Long it will last?

    • +1

      Sorry, I do not know.

    • +2

I think short, it will last. Hopefully you're not the same though.

  • Darwin to Cebu $3000+? WTF?

  • Hi, cant check myself atm. is there any deals to Taiwan ?

  • Hi Rep, any special deal from Syd to Yangon in November this cheer, thanks.

  • Thanks OP.

Serious questions and would love some feedback :)

    1) Could you 'realistically' spend 5 days as a tourist in Hong Kong - is that enough?
    2) Are their any extra VISA/Immunisation costs if heading to HK?
    3) What are some tips (Transport/Hotel/Tourist secrets) that could be of use?

Im a 30ish English only speaking White Anglo male.

    Cheers!

      1) 5 days is fine. Probably won't get to do everything, but it's sufficient. Thanks to the OP, you can always go back if there's another sale :)

      2) No visa required for Australian passport holders.

      3) Get an octopus card, it's their version of our Myki/Opal card, except it's 1000 times better, you can load money on it and use it like a debit card at virtually everywhere, like 7eleven, maccas, department stores etc.

There's English signs everywhere, you won't get lost, even maps are in dual language. If you do get lost, just speak to any professional looking young people, they should be able to help you.

        Champion - thanks!!
Any tips on hotels (location etc where I'd base myself from) to maximise time there?

        • TST (Tsim Tsa Tsui) is one of my favourite areas to base myself, but it is in Kowloon. If you want to go clubbing etc, you'd probably want to stay on HK island, anywhere near a MTR is good.

        • +1

Check out online travel guides to decide where you want to visit first, then choose the location of your stay.

Generally speaking, their trains are quite reliable and frequent, so it's convenient wherever you stay.

I'd say, if it's your first trip, it would be best for you to stay in the main hub, maybe Causeway Bay or Mongkok, think Melb/Syd CBD.

Just to give you an idea, I usually stay with family near the airport, even though it's further away from the main hub, it still doesn't take long to get anywhere.

        • +1

Recently stayed all over HK, I thought the island was better - Look around Central, Wan Chai or around Hollywood Rd - however I'm pretty "hipster" so if you are looking for a more authentic maybe check out the Kowloon e.g. TST.

        • @Chivalry: Thanks mate, but as a married man with 2 young children - the closest I've been to clubbing since 2005 was passing a bunch of revellers at 2am on a main street while I'm trying to settle my son in the car with a long drive! Keen on checking out HK with a clean touristy FIFO mindset.

        • English is still an official language of HK, certainly around the Island and Kowloon almost everyone will speak enough - I used to live there, seeing ads for shop assistants requiring 'trilingual skills' (Cantonese, English and Mandarin) certainly made me feel incompetent!

In terms of 'family stuff', the places mentioned tv special are probably the nicest areas, but could be more expensive (both hotel wise and dining wise etc). I lived in Wan Chai for a bit and its pretty fun/interesting. But Kowloon and TST - near a train line - will be perfectly fine

Don't forget some of the 'outer' islands, they are worth a trip (and Disneyland I guess)

        • Taxis in hk are dirt cheap even if you are not near an mtr or couldn't be bothered and just wanted to pile a family of 4 in.

Only problem would be peak hr traffic

        • @dtc: Agree (well, it's a fact) that English is still an official language, but I wouldn't agree at all that almost everyone will speak enough English particularly on the Kowloon side.

However, in all likelihood, the types of places foreigners go to whenever they go to HK will make them feel like HK is "english sufficient". You could argue that on the Island side it's kind of true, but definitely not on Kowloon side.

        • @rawm: Try the Auberge in Discovery Bay. There's a really cheap and quick bus service direct from the airport to the hotel front door. Great bus services around DB with excellent ferry service right into the heart of downtown Hong Kong Island. It's also pretty much a stone's throw from Disneyland (though I hear Ocean Parks is way better)…I'm an old fart and I enjoyed Disneyland. Plenty of great stuff to do on Lantau island…the Big Buddha is a must see. The cable car is a great ride. There's a huge mall/factory outlet at the bottom - but don't expect shopping to be cheap…it's all more expensive than here. You want cheap you need to get over the border into China (Shenzen)…Victoria Peak is great. The night light symphony is pretty cool. Guard your passports/cash with your life - a friend of mine got a bit distracted with his kids near the ferries in Kowloon and someone stole their backpack with everything in it…cash, cards, passports and he had no travel insurance…set him back over $6000 to replace the passports for 2 adults and 2 kids…plus all the cash etc…wrecked his holiday!

      1) no 5 days is way too short unless u just run around take pictures (no time to enjoy the history/atmosphere etc)
      2) with your Oz passport u wont need a visa and i dont think you need extra immunisation (come on you're not heading to africa or some south east asian countries)…
      3. Some tips are dont go to the "touristy" areas as u will be ripped off big time. for hotels try to book through expedia etc by looking at the best prices at the location ur after (eg. busy CBD vs out of the way)

      • 1) no 5 days is way too short

        It's all I have!

        • +2

5 days is fine - there isn't that much to see. Its not like Rome with 1000s of years of history still sitting there waiting to be viewed. Of course you will not see 'everything' but you will see plenty

        • +1

5 days is plenty. Unless you venture over to Macau (it's maybe like an hour or so by ferry) or up to Shenzhen.

Sadly, much of "old" Hong Kong is gone - there wasn't much effort to preserve it.

Make sure you get up to Victoria Peak one evening - the skyline is breathtaking (provided it's not a cloudy/polluted day).

    • It depends, if you are there to see relatives then you'll find yourself spending days of your "tourist time" just talking rather than exploring or shopping.

Just a heads up if you are in the same position, usually I book for 2 weeks or more.

    • +2

If you can only spend 5 days in HK then why not spend 5 days in HK? Sure you might not see everything but if you can't stay longer then you're just going to have to prioritise. Personally I don't spend too long there because the people and the dirt and the smog gets to me after a while.

  • Damn, Need some deals for over the Christmas break because I have 2 weeks off over that period.. Doubt there will be any specials over Christmas / New years though.

    • you can wait for Qantas sale which might happen in Aug but it's not as cheap as these.

  • +11

Thanks! I cancelled my Qantas tickets to buy this! after deducting the cancellation fee, still save $800 for my family trip!

  • Great deals, if only you could apply those deals to September. Honeymoon to Tokyo.
Already booked the holidays with work and can't shift them (new job)

  • How to do a multi-city booking? Syd-Hk ,stay in HK for a week , then HK/Tokyo, stay 10 days then back to Syd. I tried the"add a layover" button, but doesn't. Please help.

    • nevermind, I figure it out now

  • Anyone able to find some cheap flights to Seoul by any chance? Perhaps a late Thursday/early Friday to Monday? I've found some around $700 (even though not advertised here), but have a feeling there could be cheaper ones.

    • $700 is a good price for full service. I paid ~$740 for SYD-ICN return in April/May.

  • Booked a Melbourne - HK - Shanghai - Melbourne trip for $669! Thanks OP!

  • What's with the debit car discounts? Why they make a difference?

  • Hi Rep, can you do deal, I'm planning to travel to Bali and Jakarta from Melbourne in Sept. Thanks.

  • Great deals OP! Currently on our last day in Japan and planning our next trip back here! OP,are these special prices a common occurrence for Cathay from Perth to Japan? (Seems like so many specials lately and be back in the office until Tues to check leave but don't wanna miss out on the amazing prices).

I normally book with the airlines direct and haven't gone through a third party before. Anyone have any feedback on which may be the best one to use and how hard it may have been to change bookings if you needed to?
