Glen Marnoch 18YR Single Malt Scotch $69.99 @ ALDI

150

This is an unbelievable price for an 18 year old Scotch. The reviews are decent. Here, here, and here.

Whilst there is no link to the price on the Aldi website I believe the Fairfax Executive Style would not lie about this (im new to posting, so not sure if its against guidelines).

Most 18 year old Scotch are at least $100 in Australia, and whilst you get what you pay for (or ozbargain ;)), this is a great price!

This is obviously instore only, due to no weblink. Also being a new product it may be limited to certain locations initially.

  • Might pop in tomorrow and check it out.

  • you can get multi malt for cheaper…

    • Blended scotch is often a gamble. Single malt is the way a true Scotsman drinks their Scotch.
Single malt is more expensive for a reason.

Actually, generally speaking, blended scotches are less of a gamble. That's kind of the point of blending them. Any variation in one component should be less noticeable, and may be deliberately offset by another component as part of the blending process.

Single malts, by virtue of the fact they're single malts, are more likely to exhibit noticeable inconsistencies between batches, years, or even individual barrels. Along with the increased chance of variation/inconsistency, however, also comes more noticeable individual nuances and characteristics - hence the appeal of single malts.

  • Normally $99.99. When it's 19 yo, it got reduced to 70. It's been like that for 2 years. Store specific for sure!
Bought the lot b4, good dram for 70, 100? Not sure

  • This stuff got a write up in Fairfax papers today.

I liked the bit where he says "If you've ever wondered how snobby whisky aficionados can be, one well-known spirits expert admits he refused Aldi's offer of a sample bottle of the Glen Marnoch 18."!

  • Interesting. Think I'd still prefer to pay ten bucks more for Lagavulin on special though. Maybe at $55-$60 it would be a good drop to have on hand.

I like my scotch like I like my women.

18 years old, mixed up on coke in an aldi's carpark.

  • Saw a 30yo Glen Marnoch blend reduced to $99 at a local Aldi a couple of weeks ago. Was tempted because I've not tried anything of this age but resisted in favour of recent 1st Choice offers.

    • The reviews seem to say that the 18yr old is one of the best Glen Marnoch whiskies.
However 30yr old at $99 is an amazing deal!!
Id be interested as to how many casks they have gone through (and type), and where they source their water from.

ALOT of distilleries went out of business a couple of decades ago, so there may be some small name ones which have not got the demand meaning lower prices for just as good Scotch.

you guys do realise that age in the barrel is only related to size of the barrel right? You are wanting to gain the characteristics of the barrel. 100L barrel aged 5yrs may well be better than a 1000L barrel aged 18…
Why would you want a 30yo whisky? Only if the barrel size was huge. Significant risk of de-balancing the whisky.

    • Interesting. I always just assumed they would use the same size.
But now you mention it, it does make alot of sense to do it that way.
