Bit of a noob when it comes to drones, how does this compare with the ones that are several hundred? Is it worthwhile to wait & save up or start off with a more basic model?

    • how does this compare with the ones that are several hundred?

This one is much smaller, so mostly intended for indoor use. You'll want a big hall to fly it.
Sure you can fly it in the backyard, but will soon be climbing on the roof, or knocking on the neighbour's door.
The proper drones can fly outdoors, without a small breeze blowing them away.
They can hover or return home, using GPS.

For the price, its a great toy. Just do not expect much in the way of camera quality. Its like those el-cheapo dashcams than claim 1080p, but cant read a number plate even right in front.
I have one, and no regrets. Wish I had a spare grand or two for a Phantom :)

Oh, and an advantage of these is they crash without breaking.

    • If you just want to get a feel for flying these things and $70 is a lot, get yourself something cheaper and mainstream (you will crash often).

Small copters (~5cm) are fun to fly from your sofa due to their size. Sadly, they very sensitive to extra payload and wind, though they cost little ($15+) eg.JJRC H22 3D RC Quadcopter US $11.39 or H101 6 Axis Gyro 2.4GHz RC Quadcopter(expired).
Bigger (30cm) are nicely suited for outdoor acrobatic(open space), racing with seagulls and attaching to it 'things' (laser gun, camera, bigger battery and similar). They price starts from roughly $30 for the copter only(no cam, gps etc).

Subject to your needs you may find out that you don't really care so much about FPV, but more about quality of pics or time in air and that will alter your preferences towards the dream copter.

Learning to fly and crashing… and trashing a $30 copter is a better option from doing the same on your Phantom.

  • In the $70 range JXD 509W WIFI FPV 720P CAM could be seen as a better deal. It was well received when released for its performance and the barometric altitude hold. Recently EV had it in promo for ~$68. Still, SYMA is a recognised brand with quality copters and significant user group.

    • I've been doing some research and apparently this drone has some latency issues due to the WiFi and supposedly the JXD 509G is better for this. This drone costs a fair bit more, and is probably not good to start with anyway. Any suggestions for a beginner moderately featured but affordable drone?

  • This might be a stupid question - can one of these drones carry a GoPro (e.g. the Session as it's smaller and lighter)? That way I don't have to worry about the quality of the camera. I'm interested in filming some videos with an overhead perspective, or with some panning shots.

    • I would be very sceptical with this idea. If I'm not mistaken, The Session weights a bit below 80g and the Syma's cam ~20g.

If you have The Session and are looking for a suitable carrier, search the net for the copters used with it.

      • My syma cam is 9g.

    • A gopro session still weighs almost as much as the copter, so no. You need a bigger drone.

    • OK, thanks guys for the input. Will have to look elsewhere then.
