Belong ADSL/NBN - $40 off Your First Invoice

400

While Belong has a long running deal with all customers to refer a friend, they have doubled the offer.

$40 off your first invoice if you join with a referral code before June 30th. Both the "friend" and the account holder will receive this credit. I have not included my referral code here, as you can use the links to randomly select a fellow ozb user's code.

Belong is a great way to get your internet connected if you have no active line - there are no charges and you can select no contract options, pay one month and the modem cost, cancel, and your line will be active - Beats the $300+ Telstra try to charge.

NOTE: Belong will give you the "rest of the month" free upon activation, so a good idea is to apply for this service so that it activates around the first few days of the month - that entire month will NOT be invoiced, and this means you get ANOTHER month free! Belong bill on the 1st of every month. To give you a rough guide, it took 5 business days from day of sign up for me to receive ADSL2+ - I had no active line at the time.

Referral Links

Belong (Mobile): random (288)

Just be aware with Belong that their default NBN speed is a copperific 12/1. You need to add a "speed boost" pack for more.

If you're going with ADSL this isn't a factor. For reference, their 1TB ADSL plan is comparable in value to Internode's 1TB Naked @ $70.

    • +1

thats still fsater than a lot of adsl2 speeds people get.

      • +3

Yep, if I had to choose between ADSL and 12/1 NBN, I'd take the NBN. But for anyone who just sees "NBN" and thinks it means mega speed, it's worth highlighting what the base offering actually is.

It's a bit rude selling anything less than 25/5.

        • rude alright.
I think its also a way that the government advertises on local tv when areas are opened to NBN, they say the low prices (which are basically the same as any broadband service) of the low speed, but talk about the 100/40.

but, yeah, I would like 12/1 at the moment, double what I am getting now

        • +1

Also a lot of people don't need more than 12 yet. However 1 upload is pathetic

  • +2

Yeah free line activation sounded good in theory when I signed up in March. Still waiting for "Telstra" to come out. First appointment had a 6 week waiting period and then no-show due to high-workload. Was promised "next available appointment" which was - believe it or not - another 4 week wait… Formal complaint only resulted in Manager stating it's out of their hands. No offer for credit or anything that would indicate they care. Thinking of escalating to TIO just for the sake of it. Of course, this will only happen in a minority of cases but be prepared if you believe a technician might need to come out prior to line activation…

    • +5

Not discounting your experience at all, but as a counter point - I contacted Belong today, had a technician booked in to visit tomorrow, with my ADSL to be enabled 24 hours after that.

I think their performance is largely limited by the availability of Telstra technicians, which is really out of their control.

      • +1

Sure - probably good to check technician availability prior to signing up if you know you need one.
Problem with Belong blaming Telstra is that as customer I entered an agreement with Belong. As such, i cannot get in touch with Telstra directly nor direct a formal complaint at Telstra. The least I would expect from Belong is better advocacy on my behalf and if that fails some form of goodwill gesture that they've tried. Think about it. It'll be a quarter of a year between signing up and getting internet in my case. And this is the Sunshine Coast not regional Australia somewhere.

        • +1

Yep your circumstances are pretty ridiculous, I can't imagine being forced to wait 3+ months for my broadband! Belong is owned by Telstra so you would think they'd have better access to Telstra technicians, but I guess that isn't so :(

    • +3

It happened to me with Dodo. I singed up and after a long time they failed to provide the service (I think they screwed up with me for a 3 months). I contacted the ombudsman and explained the damage they caused me for not having the Internet (my wife was doing an online course and we had to put my kid at daycare so she can go to uni n study). The Om said they cannot do anything. But they provided me with a contact person (a high position manger or so). I called him and he was very understanding. I told him the whole story and I get his details from the Om. He asked me what did the aim said. I told him the truth that it's up to his discretion and they and i cannot do anything. So he studied the situations and after a week he called me and said you deserve a $300 compensation for what we did to you and he sent it shortly after.

    • It happened to me with Spintel at postcode 2230. I signed up to activate a line with no dial tone but after 4 weeks of delays with countless phone calls and emails, I have signed up with Telstra to get a basic phone service out of frustration. Spintel did offer a mobile phone or $40 credit per some kind of consumer guarantee but neither is much use to me. I had been using mobile Internet and recently got Vividwireless unlimited (though that may not be an option for many due to coverage) while I wait for the landline to get activated - over 5 weeks and counting.

    • I'm waiting for belong to activate my phone line for ADSL, should have been a month wait, I received a call from Telstra or belong, the day before the Telstra activation, that due to 'mass destruction' it had to be rescheduled, another 4 weeks.

I've seen Telstra techs working on the local phone box though, might need to offer them a cold six pack to get things moving.

  • Billing cycle sound fantastic, Optus billing system is horrific.

  • +4

For those note aware, Belong is telstra's 'budget' spin-off

    • +1

Not sure why you were negged. You are correct

      • +2

Thanks for the support :) Haters gon hate

    • -1

Hi. When u say it's the budget teltra. What do you mean exactly. Is it like going with boost mobile instead of Telstra direct.

With regards to their nbn plans will it actually be slower then Telstra nbn direct?

      • +1

Hey mate, what I mean is belong is still owned by telstra - they are just trading under a different brand name with different offerings to appeal to a budget conscious market and better compete with the likes of TPG. I imagine they have lax-er service quality requirements.

With regards to speed - this is definitely going to be slower. Telstra standard speed is 25/5 and if you pay extra $20 you can get 100/40.

Belong standard is 12/1 and if you pay an extra $10 you will get the same as telstra standard 25/5 - you can also pay an extra 25 (15 more then 25/5) for the 100/40 speed.

Probably still works out cheaper then telstra depending on the plan you chose.

        • Seen like it's the same as Telstra owning boost mobile.

Do you know if Telstra throttle belong users during peer times so that normal Telstra customers who pay more get the faster speed? I've been with Optus since the early cable days and I'm really disappointed with their nbn (I'm on the 100/40 plan) speed especially with the overseas speeds. So I'm looking for a new isp.

        • +1

@BlitzR: Im not too sure to be honest. I can't imagine them doing that specifically for belong customers. It would be a 'global' throttling problem for everyone using the exchanges in the area.
Also as far as I am aware the 100/40 is only truly beneficial if you have fiber to the node (new properties) - you will certainly notice speed advantages over 25/5 but won't get the full benefit.

        • +1

          @Drifta:
          Thanks for the info mate.

        • +1

@BlitzR: I don't think Telstra own Boost Mobile? I think Boost just use Telstra infrastructure? If so, this is obviously different to the Belong/Telstra relationship

        • @antt:
Boost used to just use the Telstra network. But Telstra actually bought them out about a year ago.

        • +1

@BlitzR: I can't see any mention of Telstra buying boost anywhere on the internet?

  • +2

I've been with them over a year. Great service, free set up and modem, no contract. Fast internet and if there is a problem they have people out to fix it quickly. Was free to change address too. Aussies on the helpline. Doesn't seem to faulter even with downloads and HD streaming running. Best provider I've been with for sure.

    • waiting for an operator on the phone is 20+ minutes everytime.

      • +1

Tech is 24 hours so I found calling outside of peak times the way to go.

    • are you on $65? wondering if i should ring for a better deal.

      • I think its $75, the 500gb a month one…

    • Is that ADSL? I was with Belong for a while on NBN it was good at first but then it turned south, support was useless & problems got worse, I ditched them & moved to Telecube…so far so good

  • +3

I was with Belong for a while (adsl2+), great technical support and service, excellent price. However in my area the Netflix effect makes downloading after 7:30pm near impossible and it's Telstra wholesale ports only. Some sort of RIM\Sub-Exchange.

Switched back to Telstra on that $99 large bundle (NBN ready), pay a bit more, however the performance and the speed is back to pre-Netflix. Wife and kids no-longer complain, matheletics, ect.. all usable after hours, even while I download my stuff.

BTW: Same modem, and same sync speeds.

Before that I was with Club Telco, and that service was not usable at night!!!

1 more thing, Belong billing and usage meter, just seems to work, craps all over Telstra's unreliable usage report.

    • Hey mate,
I am currently with ClubTelco and thinking about leaving as the speeds are starting to suffer. I too am also on a RIM so Telstra wholesale ports only available (Melbourne's North).

Did you genuinely notice an improvement going with Belong over club Telco? There are VERY few good reviews of Belong so I'm hesitant in switching over.

I would appreciate any additional comments you can make between the two providers.

      Cheers

      • Yes I found belong better, as in usable but damn slow after 7:30pm. Club telco was unusable under VPN, found out they used QOS to lower the priority on packets they can't read. ( all isp's in the m2 group apparently do that). Even web browsing was crap at times.

With Belong the web was always usable.

Honestly though signed up for that Telstra $99 bundle, and the Internet flies 24x7, it costs more but worth in terms of reduced frustration.

Side loaded plex on the Telstra tv so that was an unexpected bonus.

Telstra hasn't been all smooth sailing, their dns servers seem unreliable, so use alternate dns servers.

  • whats the cheapest nbn on a 6 month plan? don't need much downloads - 50gb is enough.

    • Check https://www.belong.com.au/nbn
Note they either do month to month or 12 month contract.

The cheapest would be 12/1 speed, 100GB, $55 per month (plus setup costs if doing month to month)

      • Thanks. Any good non Belong products that I can also use referral codes or other discounts?

        • Skymesh is a decent NBN provider. 12/1Mbps speed tier, 60GB peak data for $49.95 per month no contract and no setup. Or you could just start on 30gb peak data for $39.95 per month and if you need extra that month just bump your plan up or buy additional data, which is very easy to do through their online account management.

  • Until 26 May, you can get Belong NBN with Unlimited for the same price that 1TB is normally.

UNLIMITED is only available for a limited time, sign up by 26 May 2016.

They don't normally have an Unlimited option at all.

    • +4

Just for anyone who finds this page via a search, this offer has been extended until 26th July

  • +1

I think you need to confirm this with Belong as they do charge the $300 for the "New Development Fee" (ie new connections) unless something has changed in the last couple of weeks. As of April, AFAIK, all suppliers are now passing the $300 levied by NBN Co onto customers even for those on a contract.

    • +1

When I contacted them yesterday the $299 fee was only for laying new cable or 'trenching.' Activating an existing line is free.

      • If you havent had an NBN connection they stated that the $300 would be levied even if you have the NBN pit installed.

        • If it's a greenfield (new development) estate… not house.

        • Any house new or old that has not established a prior NBN connection… Ive looked into the extensively with providers, Telstra and NBN co…

        • +2

          According to SkyMesh's CIS:

          New developments charge
In line with the Australian Government’s Telecommunications Infrastructure in New Developments Policy, nbn co implemented the New Developments Charge on 2 April 2016. A premises identified by nbn co as a New Development Location is subject to nbn co’s once-off New Developments Charge if the premises has never had an active nbn™ service. Despite its name, the New Developments Charge also applies to developments that were built years ago. It even applies to premises where nbn co has already installed the equipment necessary to connect the premises to the nbn™ network. The deciding factor in the application of the charge is whether or not the New Development Location has ever had an active nbn™ service.

        • i only need the nbn for a few months - is there a way to avoid this $300 on a new development?

  • +1

I've got NBN active at my address, but I can't see myself joining until I'm forced onto it. Such a crazy reality.

It's so damn expensive… AND, I need to make sacrifices.

I have ADSL2+ 14/1 (actual) speeds, genuine unlimited (2TB/mth no probs) for $40/mth no contract. Granted, plus a b.s. yearly fee ($80?).

Even if I just get 25/5, I need to pay a lot more & take a massive quota hit.

Good Speed, Good Quota, Good Price… You can have ONE.

    • +1

      I feel ya man.
Our copper is about to be disabled by NBNCo but we're holding out. Just picked up a Voda sim so it's back to 2007 era 3G for me.
      16GB/mth Woot!

  • Their prices are good, but if I want to get their ADSL2 plan without a contract and go for month-by-month, then payment of $60 for their 'high quality modem' is mandatory.

With the referral code, the effective price would come down to $20, but I am still paying that amount for something that I don't need and I could have used that referral code to bring down the cost of my usage instead.

    • Locking into 12 months prices the modem at $1 and gives you $5 off each month. They will also transfer you to their NBN plan with no termination fees, Provided you restart your 12 month contract again.

I know a lot that wouldn't want to contract in, but just thought I'd add that.

      • Yeah, I think I will probably keep the service for at least 6 months. My calculation is that it will work out cheaper if I keep it for 7 months on contract, then break it and pay the early termination fee of $20 x remaining no. of months (if I HAVE to stop and move somewhere).

BTW does anyone know if cashback of $100 from Cashrewards works if you also use the referral code?

        • Did you try CashRewards and use the referral code successfully together?

        • @zedg:

No, ended up not signing up. They would not guarantee that I would get the same speed with them, even though I am currently with Telstra.

  • +2

I signed up with Belong recently, and glad I did it on no-contract. Signing up to another provider now.
    Getting 0.5 - 2mbps avg on ADSL2+ is unacceptable.

    • Is your phone line noisy? Have you asked belong to try and adjust the ADSL profile for your line? Might be the same with another provider, if it's the Telstra line.

  • +1

I signed up for Belong today. I struggle to find any good reviews of them, which is highly concerning, but I really doubt they can be worse than BigAir - who I'm transferring from.
    Fingers crossed.

  • Why would you sign up using referral when you can get $100 cashback via CashRewards? or can you get both?

    • Some people don't want to sign up for a contract. And it's $40 until June 30
