Kraken Spiced Rum $49.95 or Buckeye Golden Spiced Rum $29.90 at Dan Murphy's

490

One of my favourite rums (neat, or 50/50 with coke). 5% cashback via CashRewards.com.au if you click n collect or get delivered.

The Kraken is the most fearsome of all sea monsters that lies up to 3000 feet beneath the surface of the ocean. This dreaded behemoth has been known to attack ships, dragging fearing seamen to their deaths! It has been rumoured that a large shipment of dark, spiced rum was once taken down by a Kraken in the Caribbean Sea and the resulting rum barrels drifted far and wide. This exotic Rum has been named in The Kraken's honour and is made from naturally sweet molasses from sugar cane grown naturally on Virgin Island riverbanks. Aged in barrel for 24 months to impart classic dark rum flavours of cinnamon, ginger and clove.

Currently $59 at 1st Choice, but they will match Dans price in store if 1st Choice is closer to you.

Dan also has Buckeye Golden Spiced Rum on special for $29.90 (normally $33 from memory)
Its also a tasty rum for a bargain price and my default when I run out of Kraken (Why is the rum always gone?)
I just ordered a bottle of each.

    50/50 with coke?

wouldn't the spiced part make the coke taste weird? (I must admit I have never had spiced rum so maybe I have the wrong idea in thinking it is like the chai tea equivalent of rum)

It tastes awesome with coke. Surprisingly most bars I went to questioned what it was and often had to ask other bar tenders if they had it. It was a 50/50 chance of a bar /pub having it in stock.

If you haven't tried spice rums before. This is definitely where to start.

Depends where you are, if you're in a Capital city every hipster bar is full of this stuff.

I like spiced rums as they have more "flavour" than regular rum. But some can be too syrupy and sweet for my liking.

A lot of spiced rums are heavy on vanilla, so I guess it tastes a little like vanilla coke.. but in a good way.

Kraken is my favourite rum to have straight (well, with a single large icecube as they melt slower) as its full of flavour.. more than many spiced rums.

      • Captain Morgan Private Stock has vanilla overload! But love the taste though.

    • Try with Vanilla coke, really good too!

    • In my opinion the spiced part adds a bit of a caramel-ish flavour to it with coke. Really good actually.

Goes better with dry and a squeeze of lime, brings the spices to the front with a kick!

    • Dry? Is that like a lemonade or soda water?
Have heard its good with gingerale - but would have thought the ginger would overpower the spices in the rum.

        Dry ginger ale. ;)

It's pretty mellow, unless you put heaps in..

        • You should definitely try throwing a few drops of bitters in too. Spiced rum with dry, a squeeze of lime and a dash of bitters is my go to

    • I prefer Kraken with soda and lime.

Dry, Coke, etc are all way too sweet

  • Kraken is great on the rocks as well, full of spices with a sweetness that isn't overpowering.

Diplomatico for me. Kraken is too harsh for my liking.

    • Can't really compare at twice the price

      • In reality, if anyone is willing to commit $50 of discretionary spend on alcohol, stretching it slightly to $100 (which is around the normal price point of Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva 12-Year Rum) isn't that hard of a reach? Food (or drink) for thought :).

Doubling your budget is a completely different ballpark.

    Kraken is $48 at Cellarbrations

    Release the Kraken!

    • When I saw this Kraken deal last night, I thought about posting that meme but decided not to. I'll post something slightly different.

Zeus aka Liam Neeson commands all of you to, Release the Kraken!

  • No more free delivery offers?

  • $49 for kraken is dan murphys normal price?

    • I see it fluctuate at my local from around $49 to $59.

    • More often than not, Kraken is $49.95

  • what do people prefer kraken or captain morgan with coke?

    • For mixing, might as well get the cheapest you can find. If you are not mixing (e.g. drinking it neat), consider getting Diplomatico or Captain Morgan Private Stock (just to name a few), which are decent entry points into top shelf rum. Top shelf rums are cheap compared to other spirits (e.g. single malt whiskies).

    • +2

Captain morgan isn't actually a rum, it's a rum flavoured spirit so it is probably better to drink with coke because of that reason.

  • I prefer Napoleon 1875 Brandy. It is cheaper than I really love its sweet-and-spicy flavor, but that's just me.

  • In the summer, Kraken + lemonade is just awesome.

  • +3

If you like spiced rums then Buckeye is surprisingly a decent mixer for the price. It's certainly not as good as the dearer rums, but as I said it's a good mixer for a cheap boozey night…

  • A shot of Kraken in home made hot apple cider is amazing!!

  • Is this better with ginger beer or dry ginger ale, anyone have an opinion?

    • Ginger beer all day. With a squeeze of lime and a dash of bitters.
