Its really not. 2gb ram is absolutely painful in Windows 10. If you're literally just using this to type notes at Uni i'm sure it would be a fine laptop, but for anything else its woefully underpowered.
2gb is fine.
Corrected: it will be a good kindy student laptop.
The price is about right for the toddler. I would not buy a surface pro or mac air for a kindy student. :-)
Just be careful, these atoms xtrails are not well optimised for use with Google Chrome. They bog down alot. Explorer is fine though
Is that because of the poor single-thread performance?
Explorer is fine though
I have not heard that in a long time! I though MS gave up on Explorer and is pushing a new "edge" browser?
How is Firefox?
There is an Atom optimised branch of Firefox (Pale Moon)
and here I thought Google Chrome wasn't well optimised lol…
I thought Google Chrome wasn't well optimised lol…
Even their fonts looks terrible.
Chrome acts a bit differently to other browsers. Each Tab has it's own process, which makes it use much more resources the more you have open. The plus side to this is that if one crashes/freezes, the others are unaffected.
I know I see plenty of Forum threads and people apparently 'needing' more than 16Gb ram because they have 'lots of tabs open' lol.
Its not in the subject line there. Depends if you think this deal is worthy of a separate post.
I was hoping 64gb instead of 32gb, doesn't feel enough.
Stick a 128gb microsd card in and you're good to go.
Only problem is after the O/S there is not much room left for too many windows updates.
Prepare to be disappointed. Atom is terrible.
They are Quad Core CPU don't confuse with the very old Atom.
I know they are, and my phone has octocore cpu. Doesn't change the fact that they are inadequate for any real use.
No problem using it to do email, browsing, etc.
So do you have one?
Kind of have to agree, have an identical notebook (spec wise) and its not that amazing. If its for simple things like web browsing and word processing you will be fine. All depends on what you intend to use it for.
I've used them, this thing would struggle to run youtube smoothly at the higher resolutions. pages would bog and be slow. With the amount most people use their computers these days I don't see the value in super budget systems. Sure, they're cheap, but theyre not good value. You have to suffer through using them.
I've just been looking into these today, and I was just watching a video of someone playing CS:GO on a chuwi hi10 (which has the same CPU but 4gb of RAM). He had to lower the settings quite low but he was able to run it at ~30fps. The fact that you can get a 700g tablet, with a fullHD screen, and a 2watt processor that can run a fully fledged FPS, and last 5 hours in normal use, for ~$250 is pretty amazing IMO.
Ten years ago I was running a watercooled PC with similar specs to this (and less RAM).
Which generation? The Z2xxx stuff was significantly worse than Z3xxx/Z8xxx. Granted, the new ones are still in the low performance category, but it's still a big difference.
If your experience was with an older version, it's like coming into a discussion about Skylake and saying Sandy Bridge is slow…
I've got the 3736F version cpu and the youtube is smoother than running on android…..
Dont get too excited about your Phones specs. Octacore Processor in them means quad core CPU and quad core GPU. Somehow they add it to say Octacore I suppose.
Its like those numbers on speakers saying 1800 watts PMPO :)
@Gaggy: And this 'quadcore atom' is really a dual core.
@Gaggy: Is that what you actually believe?
@Gaggy: No. A lot of smartphone processors has multicores, many going over to 6 cores to 8 cores or even more. They usually have multicore in clusters with varying performance for power efficiency (big.LITTLE solution), i.e. 4 high performing ones and 4 power efficient ones.
At least many of the flagship SoCs do have 8 cores (Exynos 8890), last year's ones did have multicore as well (Snapdragon 808 as hexacore and Snapdragon 810 with octacore, Exynos 7420 with octacore as well). Just looking at Samsung, they started having 8+ cores on their flagship with Exynos since 2013, as far as I know, with their Galaxy S4 Exynos version. From then onward, every single Exynos that were designed to be a flagship SoC (+ few other ones) had 8 cores.
Other than that, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_big.LITTLE has plenty examples.
Z8300 is still an Atom. Not much faster than the Baytrails in CPU performance, but apparently 50% better in GPU.
I'm looking at this laptop and one from MSY that has an i3 in it.
What things would an i3 be better for? I'm assuming an atom can be used for watching full hd youtube videos and the occasional MS word use?
An Atom will have absolutely no problems with full-HD video or Office use. The RAM in these tablets are the main limiting factor (2GB), but still enough for a couple of tabs and Word. Won't be much of a perceivable difference between an i3 and this for general YouTube and Word use. You'll get far better battery life out of this than most i3 laptops though.
Thanks for the reply donnot, so what would make you choose an i3 over an atom?
If I were using it for anything outside general media consumption and Office as a 'sort of' desktop replacement, I'd go for the i3. I'll usually have 20+ tabs, a couple of Word documents, and maybe Spotify, Skype etc… running at once, so that would be enough to justify going for the i3 (or above). Also use Photoshop, and an Atom would struggle to smoothly handle anything outside basic small transformations, both memory-wise and CPU wise.
Bay and cherry trail chips are GREAT for simple tasks, word, email, internet, file management.
The battery life and portability makes them great for small business use, and our guys have been very impressed with them (actually the older bay trail version)
Bay and cherry trail chips are GREAT for simple tasks
Yes, but it won't be long before you become annoyed at heavy websites which are becoming far more common. That and single tasks at a time kinda usage.
My quad core Avoton Atom server would respectively disagree.
Does anyone know if it 2Gic RAM can be upgraded on this unit?
I don't think so.
Max memory supported on this CPU is 2GB
It definitely supports more than 2GB of RAM as my mate has one of these http://www.geekbuying.com/item/CHUWI-Hi10-Dual-OS-Win10---An… which has the same CPU and 4GB of RAM.
I have the Chuwi Hi8 Pro which has the same specs as this Asus and performane is great. You wont be able to have Chrome open with 20 tabs but apart from that I use it as a pocketable office PC which i dock with a HDMI monitor and keyboard/mouse ad it works sweet.
Cool did not know that, I'm assuming Intel has its reasons for saying Max 2GB besides trying to push people onto a more expensive CPU.
The only other consideration is whether the RAM is soldierd on.
I see it has HDMI out, would this be any good as a HTPC?
I don't see why not, if you particularly want a Windows-based HTPC. The atom is ideal for such work.
No ethernet or s/pdif though, if that bothers you. Any fan noise?
If you only want a HTPC then you may as well get one without a screen and save yourself $100.
Where?
http://www.geekbuying.com/category/Windows-Mini-PCs-1655/1-4…
I don't know which ones are good, but there are a lot of them.
@macrocephalic: Ta. Will look if any good as HTPC
@macrocephalic: Thanks K3 Windows Keyboard is an interesting concept.
If you're after a cheap HTPC with the same CPU and memory, check out this.
I have one. The great thing about the latest Z8300 is the bigger GPU and the fact they can hardware decode h265.
I leave mine on all the time. Idles at 3-5 watts. Max of 10 watts.
well a laptop isn't the greatest idea for a HTPC but yes it will handle the duties quite nicely. I had a brief use of a PendoPad (Atom Z3735F 1.8Ghz), whilst functional it wasn't what I would call enjoyable after the homeymoon period was over.
These newer versions should do better. Use Daum Potplayer for media playback. Helps ease the pain.
Thanks for the help - it would mostly be to use as a cheap HTPC, and also for use while travelling as it's light and I wouldn't really care if something happened to it.
Would I be able to play back MKV files on this or I do I need something with more grunt.?? Please help
mkv is just the container, its the codec that matters.
The atom should be able to decode just about anything in the GPU, including h265, so little load on the cpu. It can even do 4K.
this reminds me of my asus mc400 vivotab with z2760 i sold for $90 last month…
Crawls during Windows Update
How much storage is left to use on this model after O/S and initial updates?
I have a similar model and it's fine for simply web browsing, word processing, videos etc.
Battery life is spectacular.
Next to no heat and no loud fans at all.
One point to note is it's difficult to get a flavour of linux installed on these.
Linux not working? Seriously?
Yep. Have a google about baytrail / cherrytrail / atom and linux
Could you expound on that? I couldn't find anything beyond about atoms and linux, apart from the 4.1 kernel adding performance improvements.
32 bit UEFI is the problem for many distros.
Dont forget cash rewards for another 1.35% rebate
The Intel Compute Stick with the same specifications (Z8300, 2GB RAM, 32 HDD) currently sells for $200 +/-
To get a complete package with screen/keyboard/battery for an extra $20 is a bargain!
Seen it around for $120

Anything similar with upgradable ram and ssd? Looking for something like this for school work and browsing/media consumption but honestly,~10gb of spare storage and 2gb of ram doesnt really cut it for even that.
You probably wont find anything similar with upgradeable components - at this price point they're all just soldered onto the one PCB. You can get similar ones with 4gb/64gb though: http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Cube-iWork10-Flagship-Dual-OS…
Can this thing have its HDD upgraded?
nope
Hi guys,
How does this laptop compare to the Lenovo Ideapad 100s. It sells for slightly cheaper than the ASUS. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Lenovo-80R2006CAU-Ideapad-100…
Can't comment on specs etc but having briefly looked at them in GG store this afternoon, the Asus wins on its looks…
How much is it?
Jb has it for $219
Do you have a link or pic
For the touchpad alone, this thing is better than the Lenovo, which doesn't have multitouch. This has two finger scrolling, gestures etc. One annoyance of this model is the HDMI port is mini, not full size, so you need an adapter or special cable to use an external monitor.
Had a brand new Lenovo Ideapad before buying a refurb Asus of similar spec https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/244160 The Lenovo was crap. Battery was worse, screen was worse, performance not better. The refurb Asus won on all accounts. Had to return the Lenovo when it stopped charging after 8 weeks.
Is this laptop available in the colour white or black? Thank you
I have the older asus model(X205TA) which is similar in size but with a slower processor. Currently running Win10 with everything else removed. Has a 128gb microsd card permanently in the card reader. Free space in c:drive is approx 15gb. Most of the downloads are in the microsd card. Chrome runs ok, with 3 or 4 windows open at any 1 time.
I'm out on the road 12 hours a day and I use this to do abit of net surfing, watch movies, etc. Battery life is great. Screen is not too bad. Beats using the handphone to surf the net thats for sure.
Whilst this is a cheap price, and I guess you get what you pay for, after standing playing with one for a while at JB it's just way to gutless for more than the most rudimentary tasks. Which is a real shame because the physical build quality, the screen and the ports are all fantastic. If this machine was a bit more expensive and had 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, even with the same CPU, they would sell like hotcakes I would imagine.
Ok guys now you can claim $20 Microsoft Cashback on this, making it $203.20 - $4.2 CR cashback = $199 wow , thats less than US $150 !! Even the Chinese options people are posting are more than US $220 albeit for the 4GB/64GB option
You cannot claim the cashback with the free Office 365 subscription.
I did claim last year for the Pendopad without any issues. Probably need to call up Promotel this year to confirm but nothing in T&Cs changed from last year
I asked MS last time they said no.
How can you claim without a receipt that show you purchased office?
@superforever: You upload the laptop receipt of course. Did you not check the old thread from last year and quote that to Promotel ? Did you call them for this promotion ?
I didn't check, doesn't matter now I bought my ASUS X205 last year.
@regenade Would you be kind enough to supply the upload link for those that might need it?
2GB RAM is useful. At this price, it will be a good student laptop.
